To find Indian shares that lost money over five years, freeze a dated stock universe, collect split- and dividend-adjusted historical values, calculate each stock’s holding-period total return, and flag every result below 0%. Use the same dates for a benchmark and sector index, then investigate liquidity, volatility, leverage, profitability, earnings stability and corporate actions. The result is a historical screening list—not a forecast or an automatic sell signal.
Define “negative five-year return” before downloading data
A five-year return is meaningful only when its observation date, starting date, ending date, stock universe and return definition are fixed. For an observation date D, set the start to D minus five calendar years. If either date is a market holiday or has no valid observation, use the nearest valid trading day and record that convention.

For each security, calculate:
five-year total return = (ending total-return value / starting total-return value) - 1
Flag the security when the result is less than 0%. A result of −0.01% is technically negative; decide whether your report will display such small differences at more precision rather than rounding them to zero.
#1 Best Overall
“Total return” includes both market-price movement and distributions such as dividends. A price-only result omits cash received by shareholders and can make a mature dividend payer appear weaker than the investor’s actual outcome.
Price return and total return are different screens
NSE’s Total Returns Index methodology includes constituent price movements and dividend receipts, indexes dividends on the ex-date, and reinvests them. NSE says investors should benchmark against a Total Returns Index rather than a price index to determine actual returns relative to an index; that guidance appears on its Total Returns Index page, updated 4 January 2023.
| Measure | What it includes | Use in a five-year screen | Required label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price return | Change in quoted or adjusted share price only | Useful for studying market-price behaviour, but not the cash outcome of a dividend-reinvesting investor | “Five-year price return” |
| Total return | Price movement plus dividends, with distributions reinvested according to the index or data methodology | Preferred for an investor-like holding-period comparison | “Five-year total return” |
| CAGR | The annualized rate that would compound to the holding-period result | Helpful for presentation after the holding-period return is calculated | “Five-year CAGR,” not “return” |
Do not mix these columns. A vendor’s “five-year return” is unusable until you verify whether it is price return, total return or CAGR, and how it handles dividends.

Freeze the Indian-stock universe
The first practical decision is what “Indian stocks” means for your article or spreadsheet. Write the rules before collecting observations:
- Exchange: choose NSE, BSE, or a defined combination. Do not merge duplicate listings without a rule for which security is screened.
- Security type: specify equity series and exclude instruments such as ETFs, preference shares, warrants or suspended securities unless they are intentionally included.
- Eligibility: set an index, market-cap band, sector list or all securities meeting a stated liquidity threshold.
- History: require at least one valid observation near the start date. A stock listed after that date cannot produce a genuine five-year holding-period result.
- As-of date: record the exact date on which membership was determined.
Save the security list as a separate file. A list downloaded today can omit companies that were eligible five years ago but later delisted, merged or fell below a threshold. Calling that output a screen of “all Indian stocks” would overstate what it measures. If you use today’s list, label it a current-universe screen. A point-in-time universe is needed to study what an investor could have selected on the historical start date and to reduce survivorship bias.
Obtain historical observations that survive corporate actions
NSE’s reports portal provides historical Total Returns Index values, per-security price and volume data, corporate-action-adjusted 52-week fields, and old/new symbol and company-name mappings. Download the raw files and retain the download date. If your provider supplies adjusted prices but not dividend treatment, document exactly what “adjusted” means.
Use adjusted endpoints
A split or bonus changes the number of shares and the displayed price without necessarily changing the investor’s economic value on the effective date. Comparing an unadjusted old quotation with an adjusted current quotation can manufacture a loss or gain. Use a consistently adjusted series, or model every event yourself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReconcile the event history
For every flagged company, check splits, bonus issues, rights issues, mergers, demergers, suspensions, delistings and symbol changes. A merger may leave the original symbol with no current row; a rights issue may require a treatment decision; a long suspension can create stale or missing observations. Keep an adjustment note beside the calculated return rather than silently overwriting the data.

Align the dates
Use the same start and end trading-date convention for every stock and for the benchmark. If the five-year anniversary falls on a holiday, select the nearest valid trading day according to your stated rule—previous trading day, next trading day or nearest by absolute distance—and apply it consistently.
Step-by-step workflow
- Set the observation date. Write the date and timezone, then calculate the five-year anniversary.
- Export and freeze the universe. Include exchange, series, eligibility rule, minimum history and the as-of date in the file name or metadata.
- Resolve identifiers. Map current symbols to historical symbols and company names using the exchange’s mapping data.
- Download raw observations. Keep total-return values where available, plus price, volume and corporate-action files needed for checks.
- Select trading dates. Find the valid observation nearest each endpoint and store the actual dates used, not just the intended anniversary.
- Calculate both measures when possible. Store a price-return column and a total-return column separately; never substitute one for the other.
- Flag and rank. Mark total returns below zero and sort from the most negative to the least negative. Preserve unrounded values for sorting.
- Add comparison data. Calculate the Nifty 50 total return for a large-cap universe or a relevant sector-index total return for a sector universe over the identical dates.
- Investigate outliers. Review filings and event histories for the largest losses and for cases where price and total return diverge sharply.
- Archive the work. Store the universe file, raw downloads, adjustment notes, formulas, calculation date and final output so another person can reproduce the screen.
Spreadsheet and pseudocode implementation
A simple loop captures the logic:
universe = securities_as_of(as_of_date)
for security in universe:
start = nearest_trading_day(as_of_date - 5 years)
end = nearest_trading_day(as_of_date)
start_value, end_value = dividend_adjusted_values(security, start, end)
five_year_return = end_value / start_value - 1
flag = five_year_return < 0
In a spreadsheet, if the start value is in B2 and the end value in C2, the holding-period return is =C2/B2-1. A flag can be =IF(D2<0,"Negative","Non-negative"). Keep the full-precision result in the calculation column and format a separate display column as a percentage.
If you want an annualized figure, calculate =(C2/B2)^(1/5)-1 only after confirming that the interval is five years under your date convention. Label it CAGR. It is not interchangeable with the cumulative five-year return.
Compare every result with a benchmark
A negative stock return can occur during a falling market, a sector downturn or a company-specific collapse. The benchmark makes those cases distinguishable. SEBI Investor describes the Nifty 50 as the performance of the 50 largest and most frequently traded NSE companies and identifies sector indices as tools for sector comparisons.
| Column | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Stock five-year total return | Absolute investor-like outcome for the security |
| Benchmark five-year total return | Market or sector outcome over the same dates |
| Relative return | Stock total return minus benchmark total return, showing underperformance or outperformance |
| Stock five-year price return | Price-only comparison kept separate from distributions |
| Sector benchmark | Helps separate an industry-wide decline from company-specific weakness |
For a large-cap universe, a Nifty 50 total-return benchmark is a reasonable market comparison. For banks, pharmaceuticals, information technology or another concentrated group, use the relevant sector index when available. A benchmark does not make a losing stock acceptable; it tells you whether the loss was unusual relative to a comparable opportunity.
Add diagnostics before interpreting a flagged stock
Liquidity and history
Record average traded volume or another stated liquidity measure, along with the number of valid observations. Thin trading can produce stale prices, wide spreads and difficult exits. NSE index methodologies use liquidity eligibility and free-float market capitalization in index construction, so a screen that ignores both can overrepresent hard-to-trade names.
Volatility and beta
Include annualized volatility or standard deviation and beta when the data is available. NSE defines beta as movement relative to market returns and standard deviation as return variability. A stock with a modest cumulative loss may have endured extreme interim swings; a low-beta decline may have been persistent rather than dramatic. State the return frequency and look-back period used for these statistics.
Profitability, leverage and earnings stability
Useful diagnostic columns include return on equity, debt-to-equity where applicable, and variability in earnings-per-share growth. NSE’s quality-index methodology evaluates these factors over the previous five years. They describe business and balance-sheet risk; they do not predict that a negative-return stock will recover.
Corporate governance and business changes
Read company filings for promoter or ownership changes, share pledging, auditor qualifications, mergers, demergers, discontinued business lines and major capital raises. Add a concise dated note for each material event. Do not infer a cause from a chart alone.
Additional data-quality checks
Before publishing or acting on a result, inspect the raw observations rather than relying only on a vendor’s summary field. Confirm that both endpoint values are numeric, positive and expressed in the same unit. Check for duplicate rows, accidental currency conversions, repeated prices over long periods and gaps around suspension dates. A zero or blank endpoint is a data-quality failure, not a 100% loss.
Keep the intended anniversary and the actual trading dates in separate columns. This makes it clear whether one security used the previous session while another used the next session, and it exposes any unusually large gap caused by a suspension. If a stock has no valid observation close to one endpoint, exclude it from the standard ranking and report it in a separate “insufficient history” list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When a security changes its symbol or company name, retain both the identifier used in the raw file and the identifier displayed to readers. Do not treat a symbol change as a new investment without checking the exchange mapping. For mergers, determine whether the historical series represents the surviving company, a replacement security or an unadjusted predecessor; state the decision in the event note.
Interpreting price-versus-total-return gaps
A large gap between the price return and total return deserves explanation. It may reflect regular dividends, a special dividend, or a data series that reinvests distributions on a different convention. A small gap can be normal for a non-dividend payer. It can also signal that one endpoint is adjusted and the other is not. Recheck the corporate-action file and the provider’s methodology before drawing conclusions.
Relative return should be calculated from comparable measures. Subtract the benchmark total return from the stock total return, not a price return from a total return. The difference is a simple arithmetic comparison, not a risk-adjusted alpha estimate. A stock can lose 15% and still outperform a benchmark that lost 30%; it remains a negative-return security under the screen.
How to present the screening results
Readers need enough metadata to reproduce each row. A practical output table is:
| Field | What to show |
|---|---|
| Company and symbol | Name at the as-of date plus historical symbol mapping where relevant |
| Exchange and series | NSE or BSE and the included equity series |
| Actual start date | Trading date used after the holiday rule |
| Actual end date | Trading date used for the observation date |
| Start and end values | Adjusted price or total-return values, with the source and methodology |
| Five-year price return | Price-only result, if available |
| Five-year total return | Primary screening result |
| Benchmark return | Nifty 50 or sector-index total return for identical dates |
| Relative return | Difference between stock and benchmark returns |
| Liquidity and volatility | Defined measures and their measurement periods |
| Leverage, profitability and EPS stability | Metric values, fiscal periods and “not stated” where unavailable |
| Corporate-action and filing note | Events that affect interpretation |
If a metric is not published for a security, write “not stated” and identify the source or filing period. Do not fill a missing cell with an estimate that looks official.

- Using today’s survivors as historical fact: label the output current-universe, or obtain point-in-time membership.
- Calling a price change a total return: use dividend-inclusive values or label the result price return.
- Ignoring splits and bonuses: use adjusted histories and verify events against exchange or company records.
- Mixing endpoint dates: apply one nearest-trading-day rule to every security and benchmark.
- Ranking rounded percentages: sort on unrounded calculations and round only for display.
- Confusing cumulative return with CAGR: show separate columns with explicit labels.
- Assuming a negative result predicts recovery: treat it as a historical flag and perform business-quality checks.
- Declaring a cause from market data alone: read filings for ownership, auditor, leverage and business changes.
- Reporting a universal count: there is no official portfolio-wide count of Indian stocks with negative five-year returns as of 16 October 2026; the number changes with the universe, point-in-time membership and fresh security-level calculations.
Questions readers commonly ask
Should dividends be included?
Yes, when the goal is to approximate an investor’s holding-period outcome. Use a dividend-inclusive Total Returns Index or another clearly documented total-return series. Keep a price-return column as a separate diagnostic.
What if the exact five-year date is a holiday?
Use a stated nearest-trading-day rule, such as the previous valid session, and apply it to every stock and benchmark. Record the actual dates in the output.

Not for a genuine five-year result unless it has a valid observation near the start date. Place it in an insufficient-history section instead of assigning a misleading return.
Which benchmark should a sector screen use?
Use the relevant sector-index total return over the identical dates when one is available. Use the Nifty 50 total return for a broad large-cap comparison, and disclose the choice.
Does a negative result mean the stock should be sold?
No. It is a historical flag. Review business performance, balance-sheet risk, governance, liquidity and the reason for underperformance before making any decision.
Why do two websites show different five-year returns?
They may use different universes, endpoint dates, price-versus-total-return definitions, dividend reinvestment rules, corporate-action adjustments or CAGR calculations. Compare methodologies before comparing numbers.
Can I report one headline count for all Indian stocks?
No reliable universal count exists without a defined universe and a fresh calculation. State the exchange, eligibility rule, as-of date, exclusions and data treatment used for your count.

What this screen can and cannot answer
The screen can identify which members of a specified universe produced a negative cumulative return between two documented dates, show whether dividends changed the result, and measure underperformance against a market or sector benchmark. It cannot establish that a company is permanently impaired, that its shares will continue falling, or that a recovery is likely.
Use the ranked list as the first stage of analysis. The next stage is to verify the data, understand the corporate-action history, compare business performance with peers, and decide whether the loss reflects a temporary cycle, structural deterioration or an unavoidable market-wide decline. Keep the calculation files and assumptions with the published table so the result remains auditable when prices and membership change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct formula for a negative five-year stock return?
Use (ending total-return value ÷ starting total-return value) − 1, with fixed dates and a defined universe. Flag results below 0%.

Is price return or total return better for screening?
Total return is preferable for an investor-like result because it includes dividends and reinvestment. Show price return separately.
How should I handle splits, bonuses and symbol changes?
Use consistently adjusted data, verify the event history, and retain exchange mappings for old and new symbols. Never compare an unadjusted old price with an adjusted current price.
What benchmark should accompany the list?
Use the Nifty 50 Total Returns Index for a broad large-cap comparison or a relevant sector-index total return for a sector universe, using identical dates.
Does a negative five-year return predict future losses?
No. It is a historical screening flag, not a forecast, recommendation or guarantee. Investigate profitability, leverage, liquidity, volatility and corporate events.
