Short answer: use a hosted rendering and extraction service only after you have written permission from Zomato or a licensed API relationship. A service such as Browserless can run the browser, JavaScript rendering and proxy routing for you, but it cannot make an unauthorized scrape lawful or guarantee access. Zomato’s Terms expressly prohibit access through automated means, including scripts and web crawlers, and require robots.txt compliance. Commercial use of Zomato-owned data requires a written agreement.
The practical, compliant pattern is to document your authorization, send only permitted URLs or API requests to a managed provider, extract the minimum fields you need, retain data for only as long as allowed, and keep proxy rotation as an operational setting—not a way to evade controls.
What “without managing browsers or proxies” actually means
Running a local scraper for modern restaurant pages normally means maintaining a headless browser, browser binaries, concurrency limits, JavaScript execution, cookies, retries, IP addresses and proxy health. A hosted scraping API moves those jobs to a provider. You submit a URL or extraction request and receive rendered HTML or structured results.
That removes infrastructure work, not access restrictions. The provider still has to load the page, and Zomato can deny automated access, challenge traffic or impose contractual limits. No browser API, residential proxy or rotating IP changes the obligations in Zomato’s Terms, robots.txt directives or an API agreement.

Check permission before sending a request
Zomato’s stated restrictions
Zomato’s Terms say: “You specifically agree not to access (or attempt to access) any of the Services through any automated means (including use of scripts or web crawlers).” The same Terms require compliance with robots.txt and restrict commercial use of Zomato data without written agreement.
The documented licensed route
Zomato’s API Policy describes licensed credentials and places limits on caching, bulk downloads, onward transfer, statistical analysis and circumvention. If your project needs restaurant data for a product, report or commercial workflow, ask Zomato for the approved API or a written data licence. Store the agreement with your project records and make its geography, fields, retention period, user limits and permitted uses explicit.
What authorization should cover
- The exact domains, URL patterns or API resources you may request.
- Countries, cities, languages and date ranges covered by the permission.
- Allowed request rate, concurrency, pagination and cache duration.
- Whether derived statistics, redistribution or onward transfer are allowed.
- How to handle deletion requests, account data and security incidents.
- Which credentials, source IPs and vendors may perform the requests.
Choose the least intensive permitted access method

Prefer the API or a simple permitted request when it supplies the data. Rendered browsers are slower, more expensive to operate and expose more session state than an ordinary HTTP request.
Recommended hosted workflow
- Record authorization. Put the written approval or API terms in your project documentation. Note the allowed URLs, fields, request rate, geography and retention period.
- Check robots.txt and scope. Before every new URL family, confirm that the path is allowed under your agreement and robots directives. Do not treat a successful test response as permission.
- Choose a managed provider. Browserless provides REST endpoints for rendered HTML and structured scraping. Its Smart Scrape mode can fall back to a stealth browser for JavaScript-heavy pages and route traffic through residential or datacenter proxies.
- Send only permitted requests. Keep the provider token on your server. Pass a narrow URL, explicit extraction instructions and the smallest useful set of options.
- Validate the response. Check HTTP status, content type, page title, expected selectors and a marker showing that the correct city or restaurant loaded. Save an error record when validation fails instead of treating an empty result as valid data.
- Normalize and minimize. Convert prices, ratings, coordinates and opening hours into your documented schema. Discard HTML, cookies and personal information you do not need.
- Respect retention and deletion rules. Apply the cache and deletion periods in your agreement. If the permission ends, stop jobs and remove data that is no longer authorized.
Calling a hosted renderer safely
Browserless endpoint paths and payload fields vary by product and account. Use the endpoint shown in your Browserless dashboard or documentation; do not hard-code a guessed URL. The examples below are complete request patterns that read the endpoint and token from environment variables. They assume your authorized endpoint accepts a URL and returns rendered HTML. If your plan returns structured JSON, parse that schema instead.

Extract only fields your agreement allows
Design a narrow schema
Define the output before writing selectors. A restaurant record might contain an internal source ID, name, address, cuisine labels, price band, rating, review count and the source URL—but only include fields your permission allows. Keep the original page timestamp and city so later users can distinguish a current observation from an older one.
Handle JavaScript deliberately
Use rendered extraction only when the required content is absent from the initial response. Wait for a documented selector or a reliable network-idle condition rather than sleeping for an arbitrary long delay. If a page still lacks the expected selector, classify it as an incomplete load and retry within your permitted limit; do not repeatedly hammer the URL.

Pagination and lazy content
Follow only pagination links included in your approved scope. Set a maximum page count, stop when a previously seen page or item ID appears, and record the stopping reason. For lazy-loaded images or menus, request those assets only if the agreement covers them and your data model needs them.
Proxy and anti-bot behavior
Browserless can route traffic through residential or datacenter proxies, and Smart Scrape can use a stealth browser when JavaScript-heavy pages need it. Select the smallest level of routing required by your authorization and reliability goals. A residential address is not a licence to collect data.
Browserless warns that changing egress IP during a session can retrigger anti-bot defenses. Keep a session on one egress address when continuity matters, avoid unnecessary rotation, and treat bot checks or CAPTCHAs as a stop condition. Do not attempt to defeat a challenge, alter fingerprints to impersonate users, or continue after an explicit block.
Reliability, performance and cost controls
- Concurrency: start with one or a few workers, measure response time and error rate, then increase only within your written limit.
- Timeouts: use a finite browser timeout and one or two bounded retries. Exponential backoff prevents a transient failure from becoming a burst.
- Caching: cache only for the duration and purposes permitted by Zomato’s API Policy or your agreement. A cache hit must not be mistaken for a fresh observation.
- Observability: log request ID, target URL, start time, status, latency, extraction count and failure category. Do not log authorization tokens or unnecessary page content.
- Cost: browser rendering consumes more provider resources than a direct request. Reduce viewport work, wait time, assets and page count while preserving the fields you are allowed to collect.
- Quality: compare a sample of extracted records with the rendered page, monitor selector drift and quarantine sudden zero-result batches.
Troubleshooting common failures
HTTP 401 or 403 from the provider
Cause: an invalid token, wrong endpoint, expired account or disallowed operation. Fix: verify the endpoint and token in the provider dashboard, rotate the secret, and confirm that your account includes the selected operation. Do not respond by adding proxy rotation.

The response is an empty shell
Cause: the page renders data after JavaScript executes. Fix: use the provider’s rendered or Smart Scrape mode, wait for a specific authorized selector, and validate the final HTML before parsing.
A bot check or CAPTCHA appears
Cause: the site has challenged the session. Fix: stop the job, record the event and ask Zomato for an approved API or permission adjustment. A stealth browser or proxy does not authorize bypassing the challenge.
Results switch cities or languages
Cause: geolocation, cookies or account defaults differ between sessions. Fix: use only geography and localization controls allowed by your agreement, set them consistently, and verify the city marker in every response.
Selectors suddenly return zero records
Cause: a page layout change, consent interstitial or partial load. Fix: retain a small authorized fixture set, alert on zero or implausible counts, inspect a failed render, and update selectors only after confirming the new structure.

Repeated timeouts
Cause: overloaded pages, excessive assets, an unsuitable proxy route or a provider incident. Fix: lower concurrency, reduce waits and assets, use a bounded retry with backoff, and contact the provider if the problem persists. Do not create an unbounded retry loop.

- Written Zomato authorization or licensed API credentials are stored and current.
- Every URL pattern, field and geography is inside the approved scope.
- Robots.txt and contractual rate limits are checked before scheduling jobs.

Can a hosted scraper make an unauthorized Zomato crawl acceptable?

Should I choose residential proxies by default?
No. Use the least intensive routing that your authorization and reliability requirements support. Residential routing does not grant access rights, and changing egress IPs mid-session can trigger additional defenses.
