To scrape product prices, stock and GTIN from any online store, use an adaptable workflow rather than one universal scraper: start with a documented feed or API, inspect product data in the server-returned HTML, and use store-specific parsing or browser rendering only when needed and permitted. Then validate every result against the shopper-facing offer.
What “any online store” really requires
No single selector or extraction method can be assumed to work across every storefront. Stores differ in what they expose, how they render pages, and whether an offer depends on a selected variant, location, account, currency or fulfillment method. Treat each store as an integration to assess and validate, not as another page to run through a universal scraper.

Keep the concepts separate from the start: a product has identity fields such as its name, SKU, brand and GTIN; an offer describes what is available to buy, including price, currency and availability. One product can have multiple offers or variants, so attach each observed offer to the correct product or variant rather than flattening a page into one price and one stock value.
Choose an extraction route in this order
| Route | When to consider it | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant feed or documented API | First choice when the store expressly supports one for the data and use case you need. | Whether it exposes the required identity, offer, variant and context fields, and how current its values are. |
| Structured data in initial HTML | First page-inspection path when no suitable supported interface is available. | Whether Product and Offer values match the visible page and identify the correct offer or variant. |
| Site-specific HTML parsing | When permitted and necessary because supported interfaces or useful structured data do not provide the required fields. | Whether the store’s markup and page states expose the right values reliably for that site. |
| Browser rendering | When the relevant content is inserted after page load and cannot be obtained from the server response. | Whether rendering actually reveals the intended offer and its values still match what shoppers see. |
This is a decision order, not a performance benchmark. Google recommends JSON-LD and recommends putting Product structured data in the initial HTML for best results. Its Merchant Center guidance describes matching conditions that require markup in the HTML returned by the server. Those recommendations make initial HTML a sensible inspection point, but they do not establish that every store provides suitable structured data.

Check access before collecting data
- Look for an expressly supported route. Check for a merchant feed, documented API or another interface the store makes available for your purpose.
- Review the store’s rules. Inspect its robots.txt and applicable terms before crawling. RFC 9309 specifies crawler instructions, but explicitly states that the Robots Exclusion Protocol is not access authorization. A robots.txt rule does not grant permission to collect data.
- Limit collection to what the task needs. Decide which pages and fields are necessary, then test whether the chosen route can provide them without treating access to a page as permission to use every extraction method.
Inspect Product and Offer data in the initial HTML
Search the server-returned HTML for JSON-LD and other Schema.org encodings. Look for a Product and its associated Offer or offers. In this model, product identity and purchasable terms are related but distinct: fields such as name, SKU, brand and GTIN describe the product; price, currency and availability describe an offer.
Google’s Merchant Center documentation lists price, priceCurrency, availability and condition among the fields used for automatic item updates, and says structured values should match what users see. For price values in the markup it describes, use a period as the decimal separator. Google’s guidance also maps the Merchant Center GTIN attribute to Schema.org properties including gtin, gtin8, gtin12, gtin13, gtin14 and isbn.

Do not assume the first Product or Offer found on a page is the one you need. If a page contains multiple offers, match each offer to the correct identifier and variant. Preserve the page or source that supplied the value so a later comparison can establish what was actually observed.
Capture an offer as a contextual observation
Store a price as more than a number. Associate it with its currency, the product or variant, the source page and the time observed. Record enough context to interpret availability too: the locale, selected option, location or fulfillment state may affect what the shopper can buy. Do not compare bare numbers across currencies or treat a sale price as the regular price.

The values above are illustrative, not a report about a real product or store. Keeping the GTIN as text preserves its identifier form; the offer’s time and context make clear that price and stock are observations, not permanent product attributes.

Interpret availability without overclaiming
Map a source label to a controlled availability value only when the page supports that interpretation. Schema.org and Google recognize values such as InStock, OutOfStock, BackOrder, PreOrder, PreSale, LimitedAvailability and SoldOut. Do not infer a precise state from a vague label or absence of a value.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“Available” may depend on the selected variant, a shopper’s location, account state or fulfillment option. Record the relevant state alongside the observation rather than promoting one page view into a claim about global stock. If the page does not make the scope clear, preserve the source label and mark the interpretation as unresolved in your own data model.

Validate a GTIN’s format and identity
- Keep the identifier as text. Do not treat it as a quantity; preserve the exact digits as displayed or supplied.
- Check its expected form and check digit. This catches format problems, but it does not establish that the number belongs to the product on the page.
- Verify identity when warranted. GS1’s Verified by GS1 service can check whether a number is issued and may return product data and the associated company when available. GS1 said in 2024 that the public service allows 30 free queries per day; more advanced options are available through a local GS1 Member Organisation.
- Compare the returned identity to the page. A syntactically valid GTIN is not proof that the product identity is correct.
Use browser rendering only for the pages that need it
Separate values present in the server response from values inserted by JavaScript after load. Google warns that JavaScript-generated Product markup can make crawling less frequent and less reliable for fast-changing price and availability. If the relevant content is absent from initial HTML, a browser-rendering fallback may be needed where permitted; rendering alone does not prove that the captured value is correct.
After rendering, identify the offer actually shown in the shopper-facing page and compare its price, currency, availability and selected variant with the extracted record. A page that renders successfully can still show a different state from another locale, account or fulfillment selection.
Validate against the shopper-facing page
- Compare each captured price and availability value with the page as presented to the shopper.
- Keep the fetch time, source page, locale, currency, variant and relevant selection state with the observation.
- When possible, recheck a changed value rather than assuming one observation describes later availability.
- Do not rely on values that conflict with what users see. Google’s Merchant Center guidance requires matching structured data for its described conditions and warns against landing-page content that changes dynamically based on user information for those matching requirements.
These checks make mismatches diagnosable: they let you distinguish a parsing error from a different variant, currency, location or page state. They also keep a valid product identifier from being mistaken for proof that the associated offer is current or correct.
