Short answer: do not start by writing a crawler. “AutoTrader” covers separate US, Canadian, and UK sites with different contracts, and public visibility does not grant permission to collect listing data automatically. Identify the exact domain, define your fields and purpose, read the current terms, and obtain a documented API, feed, licence, or written authorization before making recurring requests. If the operator will not authorize your use, choose a dataset whose licence expressly permits it.

Can you scrape AutoTrader listings?
Only when the applicable terms, contract, or written authorization permit your proposed collection. A page that anyone can view is not automatically available for systematic extraction. The US and Canadian terms expressly restrict automated collection, while the UK terms add copyright and database-rights restrictions and limit vehicle-search material to personal, non-commercial use subject to exceptions or permission.
Personal research is not a universal exemption
“I am only checking prices” does not create a blanket right to run a crawler. The UK wording specifically limits search material to personal, non-commercial purposes, and the US and Canadian provisions regulate the automated method itself. Keep requests manual or use an authorized interface unless the operator confirms otherwise.
Robots.txt is only one input
For the US site, the exception is framed around strict conformance with the Robots Exclusion Protocol. Robots instructions can tell an authorized client which paths not to fetch, but they do not override terms, privacy obligations, copyright or database rights, an account contract, or an explicit denial. Never use robots rules as a reason to evade an access restriction.
Define the project before requesting access
Write a short specification you can send to the operator or use when evaluating a licensed feed. Include:

- Fields: URL, stock number, make, model, trim, year, price, mileage, location, images, seller identity, contact details, and any derived values. Request only what you need.
- Scale and cadence: number of records, refresh interval, peak requests, and whether you need historical snapshots.
- Storage and destination: retention period, regions, backups, exports, public display, and onward sharing.
- Personal-data handling: whether names, phone numbers, email addresses, precise locations, or user-generated text are collected, and the lawful basis and deletion process.
This specification prevents a vague “Can I scrape?” request from becoming an unauthorized production system.

Ask for an authorized route
For recurring or commercial collection, contact the operator and request one of these routes in writing:
- An official API with authentication and documented rate limits.
- A dealer or stock feed with an agreed schema and delivery schedule.
- A licensed dataset or export with explicit storage, display, and redistribution rights.
- Permission for a narrowly defined automated integration against specified endpoints.
Auto Trader UK options for eligible advertisers
Auto Trader UK publishes Auto Trader Connect advertiser business rules describing a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use specified data for an advertiser’s own business purposes, subject to the rules, term, and territory. The rules restrict use and export. This is a scoped route for eligible advertisers, not evidence that every reader can sign up or use all listing data.
Auto Trader UK help material for advertising new vehicles also refers to supplying stock data through a feed and points to API documentation and required fields. Ask whether your account and use case qualify, and obtain the current schema and licence before coding.
Questions to get answered in the contract
- Which endpoints, fields, images, and historical records are included?
- Are automated refreshes, caching, and derived analytics allowed?
- What are the request, record, and concurrency limits?
- May you export, display, sublicense, or combine the data with other sources?
- How must attribution, seller information, takedown, and deletion requests be handled?
- What fees, renewal terms, territories, security requirements, and termination rights apply?
Implement an approved integration safely
The following workflow assumes you already have written permission or a documented feed/API. It is deliberately conservative.
- Record the authorization. Save the contract version, allowed hosts and paths, fields, rate limits, account ID, expiry, and contact for changes.
- Use the documented interface. Do not reverse-engineer private endpoints, bypass a login, defeat a CAPTCHA, rotate identities to evade limits, or continue after an access denial.
- Authenticate securely. Keep API keys in a secret manager or environment variable; never commit them to source control or expose them in browser code.
- Honor robots and limits. Apply the operator’s disallow rules where required, cap concurrency, use backoff for 429 and 503 responses, and identify your client as the authorization requires.
- Minimize collection. Request the smallest field set, omit seller contact information unless specifically authorized and necessary, and redact it from logs.
- Validate and normalize. Store the source URL, retrieval timestamp, currency, locale, and an immutable source identifier. Treat prices, mileage, and availability as time-sensitive.
- Cache within the licence. A cache reduces load but can violate freshness or retention rules. Set an expiry that matches the contract and delete records when required.
- Monitor and stop safely. Alert on authentication failures, changed schemas, unusual volume, robots changes, or a spike in non-2xx responses. Pause automatically when authorization expires or the operator asks you to stop.

Handling common failure modes
“403 Forbidden” or an interstitial appears
Stop rather than trying proxies, CAPTCHA solvers, or header tricks. The response may indicate that your account, region, endpoint, or method is not authorized. Send the request ID and timestamp to the operator and ask for the approved interface.

Requests return 429
Respect the stated limit, reduce concurrency, honor any Retry-After header, and use exponential backoff. If the authorized workload cannot fit the limit, request a higher quota or a scheduled feed; do not distribute traffic across accounts to evade controls.
The data is incomplete or changes shape
Log schema versions and validate required fields. A missing trim, image, or price may be a legitimate listing state rather than a parser bug. Confirm the feed contract before filling values with guesses.
Seller contact data is present
Exclude it unless your authorization and privacy basis cover collection and display. The US agreement specifically addresses collecting information about others without consent. Encrypt restricted fields, limit staff access, define deletion, and do not place them in debug logs.

You need a historical market dataset
Ask for a licensed historical export or use an independently licensed provider. Do not silently retain every daily page response; retention and database-rights terms may prohibit that use.
The terms changed
Keep a versioned copy of the terms and contract, subscribe to the operator’s notices where available, and re-approve the job after material changes. The UK terms page itself says terms may change.

Authorized feeds are usually more predictable than page automation because the provider can define schemas and quotas. Still, design for:
- Incremental sync: request records changed since a cursor or timestamp instead of refetching every listing.
- Idempotency: use the source listing ID and revision timestamp so retries do not create duplicates.
- Queueing: smooth bursts and enforce a global request budget across workers.
- Observability: measure success, latency, response codes, field completeness, and freshness without storing unnecessary personal data.
- Recovery: persist cursors, retry transient failures, and send irrecoverable records to a review queue.
- Budget: price the licensed feed, storage, processing, and compliance work. The reviewed official pages do not publish a universal public API price or rate limit, so do not assume one.

When not to scrape
- You cannot identify the governing domain or contract.
- The terms prohibit automated collection and the operator has not granted an exception.
- You would need to bypass a login, CAPTCHA, bot check, rate limit, or technical block.
- Your intended fields include personal data without a documented lawful basis and retention plan.
- You need to redistribute a dataset but have no explicit export or display rights.
In any of these cases, use a licensed feed or another source whose terms match your purpose. This conservative approach avoids building a system that must later be disabled or have its data deleted.
