In Manager Career in EA SPORTS FC 27, free agents are unattached players you can approach without paying a transfer fee. The practical route reported for FC 27 is Transfer Hub → Scouting → Search Players, then set Transfer Status to Free Agents. EA’s official Career Mode material confirms that the refreshed Scouting area handles player searches and that managers can approach free agents, but the exact filter sequence and inquiry step below come from a current KeenGamer guide rather than an independently tested walkthrough.
The signing is not free overall. You still need room for wages, contract length, a possible sign-on fee, an agent fee and a realistic squad role. FC 27’s Interest indicator helps show how willing a player may be to join; it is a difficulty signal, not a guarantee. This guide shows when to search, how to compare targets, how the approach and negotiation flow works, and how to avoid signing a player who does not fit your budget or squad.

What a free-agent signing means in Manager Career
This guide applies to Manager Career, where you run a club, manage transfers and contracts, set tactics and develop the squad. It does not describe Player Career, which follows one footballer rather than controlling a club’s recruitment.
A free agent is unattached to a club. Because there is no selling club, you do not pay a transfer fee to acquire the registration. That removes one major cost and can make an unattached player useful when your transfer budget is tight. It does not remove the contract decision: the player can still request a wage, a contract term, a sign-on payment, an agent fee and a particular squad role.

Free agents are therefore best treated as a way to add depth or cover a weakness, not as automatic bargains. A player who costs nothing in transfer compensation can still consume a substantial part of your wage budget for several seasons. The right question is whether the complete contract fits the role your team can actually provide.
When to check the free-agent pool
EA’s Career Mode guide specifically recommends checking free agents at the start of each season as a route to low-cost squad depth. Make that check a recurring part of your calendar rather than a one-time search when you first start a career. The list can change as a career progresses, so a player who was not available in the opening weeks may appear later.
Use a seasonal routine
- At the beginning of every season, open your transfer and scouting area and review the unattached-player pool.
- Write down the positions where your squad lacks a reliable backup, has an expiring contract problem or needs competition for a starting place.
- Recheck after major squad changes, such as selling a starter, suffering a long injury or moving a young player out on loan.
- Before the next transfer window closes, review your shortlist again. Availability and willingness can change as the career advances.
The seasonal check is a recommendation from EA, not a promise that the pool will contain a certain number of players or a particular rating range. No official source gives a fixed count of available free agents or a universal signing-success rate, so plan around your squad needs rather than an expected quota.
How to find free agents in FC 27
EA says FC 27 has a refreshed Transfer Hub separated into Scouting and Transfers. Scouting is where you search across the football world, manage the scouting network and review reports; Transfers organizes active negotiations, lists, contracts and clauses. EA’s feature article confirms that managers can approach a free agent, but it does not list every button press.
A current KeenGamer FC 27 guide reports this practical path:
- Open Transfer Hub.
- Choose Scouting.
- Select Search Players.
- Set Transfer Status to Free Agents.
That exact sequence is secondary-source guidance, not a firsthand test. If a future update changes a label or moves a control, use the Scouting area and look for the player-search filter that identifies unattached players. The official FC 27 description remains the authority for the broader division between Scouting and Transfers.

Once the filter is active, do not immediately pursue the first name in the list. Treat the results as a pool to screen against the job your squad needs. Save or shortlist candidates only after checking their position, available information, likely willingness and contract implications.
How to screen candidates before making an approach
Use four decision axes: positional fit, willingness to join, total contract commitment and the squad role you can credibly offer. These are practical comparisons based on the information EA describes in FC 27’s negotiation system; they are not a formula that predicts whether a player will sign.
| Decision axis | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Position and role | Whether the player fills the position or tactical duty your squad lacks | A zero-fee signing still wastes budget if the player cannot cover a real need |
| Interest | FC 27’s indicator of how willing the player appears to be | Lower apparent willingness can make the approach more difficult; it is not a promise of acceptance |
| Total contract | Wage, contract length, sign-on fee and agent fee | The transfer-fee saving does not show the recurring and upfront cost of the deal |
| Squad role | The playing-time status you can honestly offer | An inflated role can create an expensive commitment you cannot maintain |
Start with the football problem
Define the vacancy before comparing names. A club that needs a second goalkeeper should not spend its entire available wage room on an attacking player simply because that player is unattached. Likewise, a team with a thin full-back group may value dependable cover more than another player in a position already occupied by two starters.
Check whether the candidate’s position and role match your tactics. A player can be technically attractive yet fail to solve the problem if your formation does not give that position meaningful minutes. The objective is useful depth, not the largest possible list of names.
Use Interest as a warning light
EA describes FC 27’s Interest indicator as an early sense of how willing a player is to join and how challenging the deal may be. Read it before you invest time in an approach. A favorable signal supports an efficient shortlist, while a poor signal tells you to prepare an alternative or accept that negotiations may be difficult.

It is guidance for prioritizing targets, not a signing-success percentage.

Check the role you can actually offer
FC 27 includes squad role in the negotiation information. Decide how many minutes the player can realistically receive before you approach. A player recruited as an important contributor may expect a different role from someone joining as depth. Offering a role that matches your rotation plan makes the contract easier to manage; promising a prominent role to a player who will sit behind an established starter can create dissatisfaction and unnecessary cost.
What happens when you approach a free agent
EA confirms that the FC 27 transfer process supports approaching a free agent and assessing player interest. KeenGamer’s current guide reports that the pursuit begins with an inquiry; a positive response then opens negotiations. Because EA’s feature article does not spell out every click, present the inquiry-and-response sequence as current secondary-source guidance rather than a personally tested procedure.
- Select the candidate from your free-agent search results.
- Review the available player information and the Interest indicator before committing to the approach.
- Send the inquiry reported by the FC 27 guide.
- Wait for the response. If the response is positive, continue into the contract negotiation; if it is not, return to your shortlist and pursue an alternative.
- During negotiation, evaluate the requested wage, term, sign-on fee, agent fee and squad role together.
A positive inquiry response is permission to negotiate, not a completed signing. The contract still has to fit both sides. If the terms are outside your budget or the requested role is incompatible with your plan, ending the pursuit is better than damaging your wage structure.

Separate the costs into recurring and upfront commitments. There is no transfer fee for an unattached player, but the contract can still contain several financial elements.
| Cost or term | Budget question | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| Wage | Can the club afford the recurring salary for the entire term? | Compare it with your existing wage structure and the player’s expected minutes |
| Contract length | How many seasons will the commitment remain? | A manageable annual wage can become costly when multiplied across a long term |
| Sign-on fee | What upfront payment is requested to join? | Reserve cash for the one-time payment instead of treating the transfer as cost-free |
| Agent fee | What additional amount is attached to the negotiation? | Include it in the deal total before accepting |
| Squad role | What status and playing-time expectation are you offering? | Match the promise to the minutes your tactics can provide |
EA advises monitoring wages and bonuses so that a deal does not create budget problems. Apply the same discipline to a free agent: calculate the recurring wage commitment and account for upfront fees before you click to finalize. A player who costs no transfer fee can still force you to sell another player, reduce flexibility in the next window or leave too little room for an emergency signing.
Protect the wage structure
Compare the proposed wage with players in similar roles. The game does not turn that comparison into a published universal rule, but it is a sound management check: a backup should not automatically become one of the club’s highest-paid players unless the sporting plan justifies it. Consider whether the player’s expected minutes and contribution support the entire contract, not just the first-season need.

Choose the term deliberately
A longer term spreads the annual decision over more seasons but also keeps the wage on your books for longer. A shorter term can preserve flexibility, although the player may ask for different compensation. The correct choice depends on your squad plan and budget; FC 27’s official material identifies contract length as part of the negotiation but does not publish a universal best term.
A practical decision process for every target
The following worksheet keeps the search focused and prevents the absence of a transfer fee from distorting your judgment.
- Name the vacancy. Write the position, tactical role and expected minutes you need to cover.
- Build a shortlist. Use the reported Scouting search and the Free Agents transfer-status filter, then retain candidates who address that vacancy.
- Read Interest. Mark players whose willingness appears favorable and keep at least one alternative when the signal suggests a difficult approach.
- Set your ceiling. Decide the maximum recurring wage, acceptable term and available cash for sign-on and agent fees before entering negotiations.
- Set the role. Offer the highest role you can genuinely support, not the role that merely makes the player more attractive.
- Approach one candidate. Follow the inquiry flow reported by KeenGamer and wait for the response.
- Audit the complete offer. Add wage, term, sign-on fee and agent fee; then check the squad role against your minutes plan.
- Accept or move on. If the total exceeds your ceiling or the player will not accept a credible role, return to the shortlist rather than weakening the rest of the squad.
Worked examples without assuming a guaranteed outcome
Example: low-cost defensive cover
Suppose your club has one dependable centre-back and no senior replacement. The need is match cover, not necessarily a new starter. In the free-agent list, prioritize centre-backs who fit your defensive system, compare their Interest signals and decide whether you can offer a backup or rotation role. A player demanding a prominent role and a wage that exceeds your starters may be a poor fit even without a transfer fee. A candidate willing to accept depth duties at a sustainable wage better solves the original problem.
Example: a difficult but attractive target
A technically strong midfielder may appear ideal, yet the Interest indicator may suggest that joining will be challenging. Keep that player on the shortlist if the role and budget make sense, but prepare a second candidate before sending the inquiry. If the first approach is unsuccessful or the final terms are too high, the alternative prevents a last-minute search with no plan.
Example: a long-term wage commitment
A free agent may accept a modest annual wage only with a long contract and a sign-on payment. Compare the full commitment with the minutes you expect to provide over that period. If your club is rebuilding and the player’s role could disappear after one season, a shorter commitment may be financially safer even if the immediate wage is higher. FC 27 does not publish a single calculation that chooses this for you; use your squad plan and budget ceiling.

The player will not join
Interest is an early indication, not a guarantee. If the response is negative or the player will not proceed, return to the search results and use the alternative you kept on the shortlist. Do not assume that repeating the same approach will change the underlying fit.

The contract is too expensive
Recalculate the complete package rather than looking only at the missing transfer fee. Reduce the target’s priority if the wage, term, sign-on fee or agent fee would compromise your budget. If the deal cannot be made responsibly, end negotiations and pursue a candidate with a better total commitment.
The requested role does not match your plan
A player may want a larger squad role than you can provide. Decide whether the role is worth changing your rotation and then check the financial terms again. If you cannot deliver the minutes promised, decline and choose a player whose expectations fit the vacancy.
You cannot find the documented filter
The Free Agents path is reported by a secondary FC 27 guide, while EA’s official article describes the Scouting and Transfers structure without listing every click. Confirm that you are in Manager Career, open Transfer Hub and enter Scouting rather than the Transfers list. Look for Search Players and the Transfer Status control. If a later update changes the wording, use the same functional route: player search, then an unattached/free-agent status filter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe pool looks different later in the career
That is why the search should be repeated. EA recommends checking at the start of each season, and the available list can change as your career progresses. A later review is not evidence that the original search was wrong; it reflects a changing career database.
FC 27 features versus older FC 26 information
Do not silently import every older Career Mode detail into FC 27. EA’s FC 26 Career Mode notes discuss potential in scout reports and increased AI approaches to players in the final six months of their contracts. Those are prior-version details and are not established here as FC 27 free-agent rules.
For FC 27, the safest version-specific points are the refreshed Transfer Hub split between Scouting and Transfers, the ability to approach free agents, the Interest indicator and the negotiation elements covering wages, contract length, sign-on fees, agent fees and squad role. The exact Search Players filter sequence and inquiry flow should be credited to the current KeenGamer guide, not presented as an EA-published button-by-button specification.
