You can make separate music and ambience playlists, arrange each playlist’s order, and loop one playlist—but autoplay selects a related video, and the sleep timer pauses playback. Neither is documented as starting your chosen second playlist on a timetable.
What YouTube’s playback controls can—and cannot—do
| Control | What triggers it | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist loop | The playlist reaches its end | Repeats the playlist, or—if set to repeat one—repeats the current video. It does not switch to another playlist. YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube. |
| Autoplay | A video ends | YouTube plays another related video. YouTube Help defines it this way: “When Autoplay is on, another related video will automatically play after a video ends.” This is not a scheduled selection from a second named playlist. YouTube Help: Autoplay videos. |
| Sleep timer | The selected duration expires | Pauses the current video; YouTube’s instructions do not say it starts another playlist. YouTube Help: Set a sleep timer. |
| Queue | The current item finishes | Provides an ordered playback queue, not a documented clock-based playlist scheduler. On desktop/web, the queue does not persist after closing the browser. The cited mobile queue instructions require YouTube Premium. YouTube Help: Queue videos on YouTube. |
For Autoplay, YouTube Help also states that playback can stop after 30 minutes of inactivity on mobile data or four hours on Wi-Fi. These are the page’s stated conditions, not a guarantee that playback will continue overnight on every device or configuration. The page does not state a publication date.

Set up separate music and ambience playlists
You can still prepare both playlists so they are ready to start manually, or use one playlist throughout the night. YouTube Music Help documents creating playlists and editing their title, description, privacy, and order. The instructions below describe the playlist tasks; exact controls can vary by app and device.
- Create a music playlist. In YouTube Music, open the library or playlist controls and choose the option to create a playlist. Add the music videos or tracks you want, then give the playlist a clear name such as “Overnight music.” See YouTube Music Help: Make or edit a playlist — Computer.
- Create a separate ambience playlist. Repeat the process with the ambience videos you intend to use, and name it clearly, for example “Overnight ambience.” Keeping the lists separate makes it easy to choose the right one when you start playback.
- Review privacy and order. Edit each playlist’s privacy and arrange items in the order you prefer. YouTube Music Help documents editing these playlist details and their order; it does not describe setting a time for one playlist to hand off to another.
- Choose one playlist to play. Start the music or ambience playlist. If you want that playlist to repeat, turn on playlist loop using the loop control in the player. YouTube’s loop instructions cover computer and mobile, as well as TV or game console. Check that the control is set to loop the playlist rather than repeat a single video.
- Switch playlists yourself if you want a change. When you wake or otherwise check playback, select the other playlist manually. This is the dependable option supported by the documented controls for choosing between these two lists.
Why autoplay, the timer, and the queue are not a timed handoff
Autoplay follows related-video behavior
Autoplay’s documented trigger is the end of a video, and its next item is a related video. It is not a rule such as “start the ambience playlist at midnight.” Turning it on therefore does not establish that YouTube will move from your chosen music list to your chosen ambience list.

The sleep timer stops playback
A sleep timer is useful if your goal is to pause what is playing after a chosen duration. The documented behavior is to pause the current video, not to launch another playlist when the timer expires.
A queue is an ordered list, not a clock
Queueing can help line up items for playback, but the cited YouTube instructions do not establish a scheduled switch between playlists. On desktop/web, closing the browser clears the queue. The cited mobile queue instructions require YouTube Premium, which does not change the queue into a timed scheduler.

If you need music first and ambience later
The reviewed official YouTube Help pages do not document a native scheduler that starts one selected playlist and switches to another at a set overnight time. That is a limit of what these pages establish, not proof that no third-party automation or later feature exists. Do not rely on Autoplay, loop, a sleep timer, or a queue to perform a timed handoff unless the specific app or device you use offers and clearly documents that function.
- For a simple overnight session: choose one playlist and enable playlist loop if you want it to repeat.
- For a change of mood: start the second playlist manually when you want the change.
- For a timed change: verify that any separate device or automation you consider can select the specific playlists at the intended times and remains active overnight. The YouTube controls described above do not establish that capability.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos; it is not a way to automate ordinary YouTube playlist playback or to go live from a camera. If your goal is instead a continuous YouTube live stream made from uploaded music or ambience videos, the workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
