How to Schedule YouTube Live Playlist Blocks with OBS Hotkeys

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can schedule the YouTube Live broadcast in YouTube Studio, then use OBS to play a playlist and manually control scenes or playlist items with hotkeys. These are separate jobs: YouTube schedules the broadcast; OBS supplies the video. OBS hotkeys do not, by themselves, schedule playlist changes for specific times of day.

What this setup can—and cannot—schedule

A scheduled YouTube stream creates a future live event and watch page. OBS connects to that event as the encoder, while an OBS VLC Video source plays a sequence of local media files. Hotkeys let an operator trigger controls such as switching scenes or moving to the next playlist item.

The official YouTube and OBS documentation described here does not establish a built-in way to change playlist blocks automatically at set clock times. If you need unattended block changes at, for example, 8 a.m. and noon, you will need a separately verified plugin, script, or external automation; test it before relying on it for a live event.

Check YouTube Live eligibility first

  • The channel must be verified.
  • The channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • The streamer must be at least 16 years old.

Eligibility and interface availability can change. Check the Live Control Room before publishing an event date. See YouTube Help.

Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Open Manage, then choose Schedule Stream.
  3. Create a new broadcast or reuse settings from an earlier one, then set the event details and schedule.
  4. Use the scheduled event in Live Control Room when you connect OBS. Scheduling can show the event to subscribers as upcoming and let viewers set a reminder.

YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and its stream setup guidance is at Set up your encoder.

Connect OBS to the scheduled event

  1. Open the scheduled broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and locate its stream settings.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and enter the YouTube server or stream URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. Copy the values from the scheduled broadcast rather than assuming a key from another event is appropriate.
  3. Keep the stream key private. It tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel.
  4. Confirm that the selected scheduled broadcast in Live Control Room is the event you intend to use. Start OBS only when you are ready to send its feed.

Choose the right OBS playback source

OBS source Best for Playlist behavior Requirement
Media Source One local audio or video file Has a loop option for that individual file Use a separate source for each file or scene arrangement you need
VLC Video A multi-item local playlist Supports playlist order, loop, and shuffle controls VLC must be installed; match 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS

OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist of items; its Media Sources guide is at OBS Project: Media Sources. Available formats depend on the installed media components and files.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

Build and configure a playlist block

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. Use the same architecture as OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  2. In OBS, select the scene that should carry the block. In Sources, click + and choose VLC Video. If VLC Video is not available, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Name the source so you can identify the block, then add the local media files in the order you want them played.
  4. Set Loop according to whether the playlist should repeat after the last item. Set Shuffle only if you want randomized order; OBS documents loop as on by default and shuffle as off by default for this source.
  5. Check that the source is visible and audible in the scene preview. Make sure the files are accessible from the computer running OBS; a playlist entry pointing to a moved or unavailable file cannot play as intended.

For a single file, a Media Source may be simpler; its loop control applies to that file rather than to a multi-item queue. The OBS source guide explains the distinction: Media Sources.

Assign hotkeys for manual control

  1. Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS.
  2. Find the action you want, such as starting or stopping the stream, showing or hiding a source, or switching scenes. Assign a key combination you are unlikely to press accidentally.
  3. For a VLC Video source, look for that source’s playlist next and previous actions and assign keys if those controls are available in your installation.
  4. Click Apply or OK, then test each shortcut while watching the preview. Confirm that it changes the intended scene or playlist item and does not trigger another application or action.
  5. Rehearse the complete sequence in a private or unlisted test broadcast before using it for a public event.

Hotkey assignments are configurable; do not assume a universal default key. OBS’s guide covers hotkeys in OBS Studio Overview Guide and its Keyboard Shortcuts page. The current OBS source code also registers VLC playlist next/previous hotkey actions, but that implementation detail is not a guarantee that every packaged installation exposes identical defaults.

Start the scheduled stream and verify it

  1. Allow time to configure the encoder. YouTube advises setting it up at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand.
  2. Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event for viewers.
  3. Verify picture, audio, playlist order, and the selected broadcast. Confirm that the event is accessible to the intended audience.
  4. Use the assigned hotkeys for manual scene or playlist control during the event. Stop the encoder in OBS after the broadcast is over.

These timing recommendations come from YouTube Help’s YouTube live streaming tips; allow more time if your files, connection, or event setup need extra checks.

Troubleshooting

  • The scheduled event is not available or OBS cannot connect: Check channel eligibility, confirm that you opened the intended scheduled broadcast, and recopy its server URL and stream key into OBS. Keep the key private.
  • VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS, such as 64-bit with 64-bit.
  • A playlist item does not play: Check that the file still exists at the listed location and is accessible to the OBS computer. Verify playback in the preview before going live.
  • The playlist repeats or changes order unexpectedly: Review the VLC Video source’s Loop and Shuffle settings. Loop and shuffle are independent controls.
  • A hotkey does nothing or triggers the wrong action: Reopen Settings → Hotkeys, confirm the assignment against the intended source or scene, and test it in rehearsal. Do not rely on an assumed default.
  • The stream is not ready at event time: Start the encoder early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview, picture, and sound before the audience arrives.

Respect music, video, and live-stream rules

Only use media you have the rights or permissions to stream. A playlist that plays correctly in OBS is not automatically cleared for YouTube. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies for your content and channel before broadcasting, and do not assume that looping or scheduling makes reused material permissible.
