Give every image a timestamp and capture record, keep the browser, viewport, region and capture area consistent, and verify the same product, variant, currency, delivery context and availability before treating a visual difference as a price change.
What a scheduled screenshot can—and cannot—tell you
A screenshot is a record of what a browser rendered at a particular time. It can help you review sale banners, product listings or displayed prices later, but it does not establish why a page changed or independently verify that a numeric price moved.
Indian ecommerce pages can vary by product variant, delivery region, stock, currency, delivery options or promotion. A banner changing, a cookie overlay appearing, rotating content or a layout shift can also create a visual difference unrelated to price. Compare like with like before recording a price movement.
Choose what to capture and record
- List the exact permitted URLs. Decide whether each capture should show a whole landing page, a promotion banner or a particular product and price region.
- Define the comparison context. Record the capture time and timezone, URL, browser version, viewport and capture area. Where visible and permitted, note delivery region and the product variant.
- Choose page or element capture. A full-page image preserves surrounding context; a targeted element capture or clip can reduce noise from unrelated rotating content. Playwright documents page, full-page and element screenshots at Playwright screenshots.
- Keep the run record with the image. Save a timestamped filename and log whether the run succeeded or failed. Set a retention policy that suits your need to review past sales.
Capture a page with Playwright
Playwright captures the page; it does not itself make the capture recur. Install Playwright and a browser runtime in the environment that will run the job. This Node.js example captures a full-page PNG. Replace the URL with a page you are permitted to access.

});For a price-focused record, wait for a stable selector representing the price rather than assuming that initial navigation means the price has loaded. For example, replace the body locator with page.locator('.price-selector').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 }), using the actual selector for the page. Selector changes are common failure points, so log them and review failed runs.
To capture only an element, Playwright supports locator screenshots: await page.locator('.price-selector').screenshot({ path: `price-${stamp}.png` });. Use a selector that identifies the same product and price area each run; verify that it still points to the intended item after site changes.

Make the capture recur with a scheduler
Run the script from a separate scheduler on a machine or hosted runner where the browser runtime is installed. For example, a Unix cron entry below runs daily at 09:00 in the scheduler host’s local timezone; set the host timezone deliberately or use a UTC schedule if that is your chosen reference.

Exact interface labels and retention behavior depend on the scheduler you choose. Whichever scheduler you use, ensure failures are visible: retain logs, detect missed runs, and avoid silently overwriting older images. A capture archive is useful only if you can associate each file with its run time and context.

Keep comparisons meaningful
- Hold the environment steady. Keep browser version, viewport, capture region and capture timing consistent where possible.
- Wait for the relevant content. Wait for the price or promotion element to load rather than relying on a fixed short delay alone.
- Use a stable capture area. Full-page capture is useful when surrounding page context matters; an element or clipped capture can avoid irrelevant changes elsewhere.
- Inspect apparent changes. Confirm product identity and variant, currency, region, availability and displayed price before logging a price change.
- Separate visual evidence from interpretation. Save what the browser showed and note your verification separately. A screenshot does not explain the cause of a change.
Playwright Test includes a screenshot assertion that waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the last screenshot with an expectation. That stability behavior applies to its test assertion; it is not a guarantee that an independently scheduled capture will be stable. See the Playwright PageAssertions API.

Troubleshooting scheduled captures
- The job runs but no image appears: Check the scheduler’s working directory, output path permissions and run logs. Use an absolute path for the script and output storage where possible.
- The script times out: Pages may load slowly or wait on dynamic content. Inspect the failing navigation or selector, set a suitable timeout, and wait for the relevant element. Do not treat a timeout as evidence that the sale page is unavailable to visitors.
- The image shows a loading state or missing price: Navigation completion is not the same as the price having rendered. Wait for the price element and record a failed or incomplete capture if it never appears.
- Images differ even when the price appears unchanged: Compare viewport, browser version, capture region and timing. Check for banners, cookie overlays, rotating content and layout shifts before interpreting the difference.
- The apparent price changed: Recheck the product and variant, currency, delivery region, stock and displayed price. Record a price movement only after those contexts match.
- The site blocks automation: Follow the site’s terms and access rules. Do not try to evade bot checks or other restrictions; the reviewed sources do not establish the rules for every merchant or URL.

Does a screenshot prove when a retailer changed its price?
No. It records what the browser rendered at capture time, not when or why the underlying price changed.
