To show the song and artist currently playing on a 24/7 YouTube music stream, make the playlist player the source of what is playing, read its current-track metadata, and display that metadata as an overlay in the outgoing video. Scheduling a YouTube live event is a separate job: its title describes the broadcast, not each song.
Separate song scheduling from the YouTube broadcast
A continuous music stream has three connected parts: a player or playlist controls playback and song order; a metadata source identifies the active track; and an encoder such as OBS places the information in the video sent to YouTube. Keep these responsibilities distinct when planning the setup.

- Playlist or player: decides what plays and when, including transitions and any schedule you configure.
- Track metadata: supplies the title and artist for the item the player is actually playing.
- Encoder overlay: renders that information on screen for viewers.
- YouTube broadcast: is the scheduled live event receiving the audio-video feed. Its event title is not a per-track now-playing label.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents broadcast and feed management; it does not schedule individual songs. The playlist/player must handle song order. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API Reference and API overview.
Set up scheduled playback and a now-playing overlay
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube’s API model, a
liveBroadcasthas a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status; a category can also be specified. The broadcast is the viewer-facing event. A separateliveStreamrepresents the incoming audio-video feed. Use YouTube Studio or your chosen integration to set up the event appropriate to your workflow. The resource distinction is described in Google’s Understanding Broadcasts and Streams. - Configure the player or playlist schedule. Set the order, timing, and transitions in the playback system that will run the music. Do not assume that scheduling the YouTube event schedules its songs; those are different functions.
- Get track information from the active player. Prefer metadata exposed by the player that is actually producing the audio over text timed manually to a clock. If playback is skipped or delayed, manually timed labels can stop matching the music.
- Connect metadata to an encoder overlay. Add a text or graphic overlay in OBS or another encoder and connect it to the current-track information. Check that both title and artist are visible and update when tracks change.
- Test transitions and restarts before relying on the stream. Check normal track changes, skips, playlist transitions, and player or encoder restarts. Confirm that the label follows the audio after each case, rather than merely changing on the schedule you expected.
One OBS example: VLC metadata to on-screen text
An OBS Project Forums community listing describes a VLC integration that reads ID3 metadata—including title, artist, and album—for supported audio formats. It allows custom formatting and can optionally export the current song to a text file, which an OBS scene can use as text. This is a community-listed third-party integration, not a guarantee of a built-in OBS feature or universal compatibility. Check its current availability, supported formats, and compatibility with your setup at VLC Now Playing Monitor – Metadata Display.

- Use VLC as the playback source only if the integration supports the audio formats and playback arrangement you need.
- Configure the integration to expose the active track’s title and artist, using its available output method and formatting.
- Add that output to the OBS scene as a text source or other suitable graphic, following the integration’s current instructions.
- Play tracks with different metadata and verify the overlay changes at the actual transitions. Also test tracks with missing or malformed tags so you know what viewers will see.
This example does not establish a universal playlist scheduler, nor does it certify that a particular player-and-encoder combination can run continuously without interruption. The community discussion How to automatically display song titles in OBS based on a schedule? reflects the same distinction: scheduled text is not necessarily accurate metadata from active playback.
Keep recurring events and stream continuity separate
Google documents a recurring-event pattern in which one liveStream resource can be bound to multiple scheduled liveBroadcast resources, with only one event live at a time. Its implementation guide also describes a 24/7 broadcast continuing as events change. This is an API architecture pattern, not a promise that a particular encoder or playlist will recover from a failure automatically. See Implementation: Broadcasts and Streams.

Plan and test continuity in the playback and encoding setup independently of track labeling. A correct overlay cannot keep the audio feed running, and a continuing feed does not ensure that its song labels are accurate.

- The YouTube event is configured with the intended title, scheduled start time, and privacy status.
- The playlist/player—not the YouTube event—controls song order and timing.
- The metadata comes from the player actually supplying the audio, and includes usable title and artist values.
- The overlay updates after skips, transitions, and restarts, and remains readable in the final video.
- Your player, metadata integration, encoder, and recurring-event arrangement have been checked together; compatibility and continuous operation depend on the specific setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. Its role is to keep playback running in the cloud, not to replace the separate work of supplying and displaying accurate current-track metadata.
