To schedule daily screenshots of Indian Panchayat websites, write a Selenium script that opens each authorized public URL, waits for a page-specific sign of readiness, saves the browser window as an image, and exits cleanly. Then run that script on a machine or job service using its scheduler. The script below uses headless Chrome and Python; the scheduling steps depend on where you run it, so check that platform’s current official scheduler documentation.
Choose the pages and capture goal
Start with an explicit list of public pages and decide what each screenshot needs to show: a landing page, a report, a notice, or a particular panel. An Indian Panchayat-related page might be part of eGramSwaraj or a state or local Panchayat website. Do not assume they share a layout or selector.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj describes eGramSwaraj as an integrated information system for Panchayats, with modules covering profiles, planning, progress reporting, accounting, asset directories, and user management. NIC describes it as a web-based Panchayat digitisation application available 24×7. Those descriptions provide context, not a guarantee that every local site uses eGramSwaraj or is reachable on every scheduled run.
Keep this workflow to public pages you are authorized to monitor. Do not use it to automate CAPTCHA solving, login bypass, or privileged administrative actions.

Install Selenium and prepare headless Chrome
Selenium WebDriver drives a real browser, locally or remotely, and is a W3C Recommendation. For an unattended local run, Selenium documents Chrome’s --headless=new argument. Browser and ChromeDriver compatibility matter; check Selenium’s current Chrome documentation for deployment details.
Install Python and Selenium in the environment that will run the job. Selenium Manager can help manage drivers in supported setups, but verify browser and driver availability on the actual host. Set a consistent window size so captures are comparable between runs.

Write a scheduled screenshot script
This example captures each listed URL in a separate PNG named with a UTC timestamp. Replace the example URL and readiness condition with the public pages and stable elements you actually need. It waits for the document to reach complete as a baseline, then saves the current browser window.

driver.quit()Selenium’s screenshot API supports saving a screenshot to a file. This captures the current browser window; it is not automatically a full-page capture. If your comparison needs the whole page, plan and validate a full-page method separately rather than assuming the default screenshot includes content below the viewport. For later review, keep a small manifest containing the URL, timestamp, browser version, and output filename.

Wait for the page state that matters
A completed navigation is not proof that a dynamic page has finished rendering. Selenium’s navigation wait is tied to document readiness, while JavaScript can continue changing the page afterward. Replace the baseline check with an explicit wait for a stable, page-specific condition when possible: for example, visibility of the report heading or appearance of the table you need. Selenium’s guidance recommends explicit waits and warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable wait times. See Selenium waits and driver options.
Do not reuse one CSS selector across unrelated Panchayat sites unless you have verified that each page uses it. A selector that never appears will time out; one that appears before the useful data loads can produce an incomplete image.

Schedule it on the machine that will run it
Pick the deployment environment first: a Linux host, a Windows machine, and a managed job service have different schedulers and operational controls. Then use that environment’s current official instructions to schedule the Python command at the desired cadence. Keep the script, its Python environment, Chrome, output directory, and any required permissions available to the scheduled process—not only to your interactive login session.

These are deployment choices, not Selenium defaults. Start with one URL and a manual run, confirm that the saved image is correct, then enable the schedule and inspect the first unattended run.

Account for reliability, runtime, and cost
- Readiness: dynamic updates may occur after
readyStatebecomescomplete; use a meaningful explicit wait where the page provides a stable element. - Browser compatibility: record the browser version and check Chrome/ChromeDriver compatibility when updating the host.
- Runtime: each URL requires navigation, readiness waiting, and image writing. Runtime therefore varies with page behavior and the number of pages; the available sources establish no universal capture time or frequency limit.
- Storage: timestamped images accumulate. Set retention and storage limits appropriate to your review needs.
- Execution location: local and remote WebDriver are both supported approaches, but where browser versions, files, logs, and scheduling live depends on your chosen environment.
As context for the portal’s scale—not for Selenium coverage or screenshot success—the Ministry of Panchayati Raj reported that as of 11 March 2026, 2,54,604 of 2,64,211 Gram Panchayats and equivalents (96.36%) had uploaded FY 2025–26 GPDPs, and 2,42,871 (91.92%) had made payments totaling ₹38,491 crore through the eGramSwaraj–PFMS interface. The figures appeared in a Ministry release posted 17 March 2026: PIB release.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Chrome will not start: confirm Chrome is installed and executable in the scheduled environment, then check the browser/driver compatibility and the process permissions.
- The script works manually but not on schedule: scheduled jobs may run with a different working directory, PATH, user, or Python environment. Use the intended environment and an explicit output path, and capture standard output and errors in the scheduler’s logs.
- The screenshot shows a spinner or missing data: navigation readiness was too weak for the page. Wait for the actual report or heading, or for a loading indicator to disappear, with a timeout suited to the site.
- The wait times out: verify the URL and selector in a visible browser session, check whether the page changed, and ensure the element is not inside a frame that your script has not switched into.
- The image is clipped or inconsistent: set a stable viewport and verify whether the target requires a full-page capture rather than a current-window screenshot.
- No output file appears: check the job’s working directory, write permissions, and whether the browser closed early. The
finallyblock ensures the browser is quit when an error occurs, but logging is still needed to identify the failure.
