Choose a setup that fits your monitoring needs
Capturing a page and scheduling that capture are separate jobs. A browser tool renders the page; a scheduler starts the capture at the interval you choose. Neither approach makes a screenshot a live inventory feed, and the right interval depends on how often an observation is useful to you.

Set up a repeatable Playwright capture
This Python example captures a full page for each URL in a text file, names each image with a UTC timestamp, and waits for a product-details selector before taking the screenshot. Replace the example URLs and selector with values that work for the pages you are allowed to monitor. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the same environment that will run the script.

The selector main is only a fallback example: use a selector that identifies the product information on your target page, and verify it actually becomes visible. A site’s content may require a different wait condition, authentication, or permitted consent handling.
Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: capture only what is visible in the browser window when the screenshot is taken. This can be faster to inspect and keeps surrounding page context.
- Full page: use
full_page=Trueto include the scrollable page. Long pages can contain irrelevant content and may take longer to capture. - One element: capture just a product details region with
page.locator("YOUR_SELECTOR").screenshot(path="product.png"). This makes comparisons more focused but can omit useful context if the selector is too narrow.
Make the page state consistent
Use the same browser engine, viewport, device scale factor and capture environment each time. Wait for the relevant price or availability region, rather than relying only on a fixed delay. If a predictable overlay blocks the content, handle it deliberately in the normal capture flow when doing so is permitted; do not assume every consent banner or popup behaves the same way. Keep login state and other page conditions consistent if the information is only visible after sign-in.
Run the script on a recurring schedule
The following cron entry runs a script daily at 09:00 UTC. Cron schedules commonly use the host machine’s timezone, so confirm the timezone of your scheduler before relying on that time. Change the schedule to suit the observation you need; an interval is not a guarantee of real-time stock status.

- Run the script interactively first. Confirm that each intended URL produces an image and that the image contains the expected product details.
- Add the cron line using the scheduler on the machine that will stay available. Use absolute paths for the project and Python executable; redirect output to a log so failures are not silent.
- Ensure the destination has enough storage, and decide how long to retain captures. Set up a separate backup or alert mechanism if those images are important; the cron line itself only starts the script.
In a hosted workflow, configure the same script as a recurring job and install the browser runtime as part of that job. Check the workflow platform’s timezone, job limits, storage behavior and retention rules; those details vary by platform.
Store and interpret the observations
Timestamped files establish when your script captured a page, not when a retailer changed its underlying inventory. Keep the original images, and record the target URL, capture time, viewport, browser version and any relevant run errors alongside them. Those details help explain apparent differences and make an observation easier to reproduce.

Visual comparison is useful for flagging changes, but screenshots can differ because of rendering variation. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode can affect rendering. Keep the environment consistent and inspect flagged changes rather than treating every pixel difference as meaningful.
If you need a precise price or availability history, pair the image with a permitted structured check of the displayed text, and save the extracted value and timestamp. A screenshot diff alone may not identify which text changed, and it does not verify actual stock. Review the target site’s terms and the capture provider’s rules before automating access.

Troubleshoot common capture failures
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: confirm the URL is correct and inspect the page manually. The page may need more time, a different wait condition, or a selector that appears only after scripts run.
- The script times out waiting for a selector: check that the selector exists on that page and is visible in the same state your script uses. Do not simply increase the timeout without checking whether the page rendered the expected content.
- The output differs on every run: standardize browser, viewport, scale factor and runtime. Inspect dynamic regions such as rotating promotions or timestamps separately from the product information you want to monitor.
- Cron works manually but not on schedule: use absolute paths, verify the scheduler’s timezone and environment, and inspect the redirected log. The scheduled process may not inherit your interactive shell’s environment.
- Images accumulate or a run stops unexpectedly: check available disk space and scheduler execution limits, and define retention for old files. For larger URL lists, handle failures per page and monitor logs rather than letting one failed page silently end the whole run.

How often should I schedule product-page captures?
There is no universally appropriate interval. Choose one based on how frequently an observation is useful, then verify that the resulting record is adequate for your purpose.
Can screenshots tell me whether an item is actually in stock?
They show what the captured page displayed at that time. They cannot establish live inventory or prove that a displayed availability message reflects stock beyond the page.
