Use browser automation such as Playwright: sign in through the site’s normal flow, save the resulting browser state securely, then load it in a recurring job. Before saving a screenshot, verify that the protected page—not a login screen—has loaded. This works only when the site’s authentication method allows the saved state to be reused; session storage, expiring sessions, MFA, and custom SSO may need extra handling.
What the scheduled workflow needs
A recurring capture has four parts: an authorized account, reusable authentication state, a browser script that checks the target page before capturing it, and a scheduler that runs the script. You can run it on a server or computer you control, in CI, or through a managed browser service. The right choice depends on where credentials and images can safely live and how much execution infrastructure you want to maintain.

- Confirm you have permission to access and capture the page. Do not use automation to bypass access controls.
- Complete the site’s ordinary login flow and save browser state after the authenticated page is ready.
- Run a script on a schedule. It should navigate to the protected route and verify an authenticated-page marker before taking the screenshot.
- Store the screenshot and logs somewhere with appropriate access controls and a defined retention period.
Set up and protect Playwright authentication state
Playwright can save browser storage state and reuse it in a later browser context. The state needed varies by site. Cookies and local storage are common; Playwright also supports IndexedDB in storage state. Session storage is domain-specific and is not automatically preserved by the standard storage-state API, so a site relying on it needs separate save-and-restore handling. Passkeys and interactive authentication flows may also require site-specific setup. See Playwright’s authentication guidance and its project authentication documentation.

- Run an approved login setup, either by automating the normal form or by completing an interactive sign-in, including MFA if the site requires it.
- Wait for a known authenticated page before saving storage state. Use the state file in later browser contexts.
- Put the state file in a private directory such as
playwright/.auth, and add that directory to.gitignore. Do not commit it, print it to logs, or expose it in broadly accessible CI artifacts.
Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Treat it like a password: restrict access, keep it out of source control and public artifacts, and refresh or rotate it in accordance with the site’s authentication rules. Sessions can expire or be revoked, so a scheduled job must be able to report that sign-in needs attention.

Write a scheduled capture that checks the page first
The following Node.js example assumes an earlier login setup saved playwright/.auth/state.json. Replace the example URL and page marker with values that are stable for your site. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser before running it. It saves a full-page PNG only after the expected authenticated content is visible; if navigation or the check fails, the script exits unsuccessfully rather than quietly recording a login page.

});Playwright’s screenshot documentation covers viewport, full-page, and element captures, as well as saving to a file or working with image bytes. Use a locator specific to the authenticated view. A URL alone is not proof of successful login: a site may redirect, render an access-denied page, or show incomplete client-rendered content.

Choose the screenshot scope and readiness check
- Viewport: use the default screenshot when only the currently visible screen matters; it is usually the most compact capture.
- Full page: set
fullPage: trueto include the page’s scrollable content. Long pages can produce large images, and lazy-loaded sections may need to be brought into view before capture. - One element: locate the component of interest and call
locator.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' }). This reduces unrelated page content in the output. - Dynamic content: wait for a meaningful selector or known page state. A fixed delay can help with a known asynchronous transition, but it is less reliable than waiting for the content itself.
For visual comparisons in the Playwright test runner, screenshot assertions can wait for successive screenshots to stabilize; that helps with visual stability but does not prove the page’s underlying data is correct. See Playwright page assertions.

Use cron or an equivalent scheduler to invoke the script at the required cadence. A machine or server you control offers direct control over files and credentials. CI can simplify recurring execution but requires careful secret handling and artifact permissions. A managed browser service can reduce maintenance, but review its credential access, data retention, and output controls before using it for private pages.

A GitHub Marketplace screenshot-action example demonstrates a cron-triggered workflow and an output directory. It is an implementation example, not a guarantee that every runner, schedule, or artifact configuration behaves the same way. Choose a cadence based on how often the page changes and how much output you intend to retain.
- Keep authentication state and credentials in restricted secrets or private storage, not in workflow logs.
- Make failures visible: retain a non-sensitive error message and mark the job failed if authentication or the expected content check fails.
- Restrict access to screenshots, since authenticated pages may contain private or customer information.
- Set an output retention policy. Avoid public repositories or publicly accessible artifacts unless publishing the captured content is intentional and authorized.

Can a scheduled screenshot run after the browser is closed?
Yes. The saved browser state is loaded into a new browser context when the scheduled script runs, provided the site still accepts that state and the runner can access it.
