The technical setup is only half the job: clear both the recording and the underlying musical and literary works for continuous YouTube livestreaming, and arrange monitoring and independent recording. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube as the complete archive for a 24/7 broadcast.
Before scheduling, clear the music for this use
A regional-language catalogue or a song appearing in a rights organization’s database does not by itself grant permission to broadcast it continuously on YouTube. Check each track for the rights in the sound recording (the master recording) and the underlying musical and literary works. Those rights may be controlled by different parties.
Ask the relevant rights holder or authorized licensor for written permission that expressly covers YouTube livestreaming, continuous broadcast, the countries where the stream will be available, the term, monetization, and any reporting or attribution conditions. A licence for an in-person event or public performance is not proof that online transmission is covered.
What IPRS and PPL do—and do not—establish
- IPRS: The Indian Performing Right Society says its licences concern works it controls on behalf of its members, and it lists internet-streaming and live-streamed-event categories. Its licensing page describes an IPRS licence as “usually a blanket License,” but that does not clear every song, sound recording, or right. IPRS reports a database of more than 600,000 song titles; it says the database is updated and may not be exhaustive. A missing entry is not evidence that a song is free to use.
- PPL India: PPL describes a library of more than 1.04 crore songs, including recordings in regional languages. That repertoire breadth does not mean its public-performance licence covers a YouTube livestream. PPL’s FAQ says: “PPL does not issue license for usage of sound recordings on a digital platform. You will have to reach out to individual music labels for the same.” For digital use, contact the relevant label or other rights holder and confirm its authority for the specific recording.
Do not use event or on-ground tariff figures as the cost of licensing a 24/7 YouTube channel. The applicable permission and terms depend on the rights, repertoire, platform, territory, duration, and use being proposed. Confirm them directly with each relevant rights holder; there is no universal clearance established here for every regional song.

Keep a track-by-track rights log
Before adding a track to the rotation, record its title, recording owner or label, composition and lyric rights information, permission evidence, permitted platform and use, territory, term, monetization conditions, and attribution or reporting requirements. Buying a download, subscribing to a music service, or finding a song in a society database does not by itself establish livestream permission.
Create and schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open the Manage tab and choose Schedule Stream.
- Set the audience-facing title and description, thumbnail, visibility, and start time. Scheduling creates a watch page that you can promote and lets viewers opt into reminders.
- In Live Control Room, obtain the event’s stream URL and stream key for your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Before launch, open the scheduled watch page and check that its details and visibility are correct.
Prepare the encoder and music rotation
YouTube supports encoder-based delivery and recognizes both software and hardware encoders. Neither a particular software package nor a dedicated hardware unit is mandatory for every music stream. Choose an encoder that supports YouTube’s current ingest workflow and the continuous operation, monitoring, and backup you can maintain. A hardware encoder is an option, not a requirement.

- Enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Keep the key private.
- Set up a stable audio source and a suitable still or animated visual for the radio stream. Organize regional and language selections into clearly labeled blocks so you can identify what is playing and check that the intended rotation is active.
- Use the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval supported by your encoder and the current requirements shown for your YouTube ingest setup. The reviewed guidance does not establish one set of numeric encoder values for every channel, connection, and production; do not copy arbitrary numbers from an unrelated setup.
- Configure an independent local recording if you need a complete archive. Verify that the recording is being written and that there is enough storage for the planned duration.
Run a preflight and launch carefully
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Those are event-oriented recommendations; for continuous radio, turn them into a repeatable launch checklist and monitor the channel throughout operation.
- Start the encoder and confirm that Live Control Room receives its signal and displays a preview.
- Listen to the preview for clean, steady audio and confirm that the visual is present.
- Check that the local recording is growing and that the scheduled watch page opens as intended.
- Test your recovery plan before launch, including backup encoder failover if your setup uses it.
- Start the event only after the preview and playback checks pass. Keep a person responsible for monitoring interruptions, audio problems, and rights-related notices.
Plan for interruptions and the 12-hour archive limit
A 24/7 service needs a plan for encoder crashes, power loss, internet interruption, a scheduled event ending, a missing or corrupt music file, and a copyright complaint. Test who will notice each failure and what they will do to restore service. YouTube recommends testing the stream and describes checking backup encoder failover; it does not prescribe one architecture for every continuous channel.

YouTube Help warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but a single continuous broadcast beyond that limit is not a reliable archive strategy. If retaining the full programme matters, record locally or use another independent archive process, and verify that it is working rather than assuming the platform archive is complete.
