You schedule the live event in YouTube Studio, then use OBS to send a recording—or an ordered playlist of recordings—as the event’s video and audio feed. Those are separate steps: scheduling a YouTube event does not, by itself, schedule OBS playback to start or make the event go live.
“YouTube Live playlist” can mean either a playback queue inside OBS or a YouTube playlist that organizes the published replay afterward. This guide covers both.

Understand the two playlists
- OBS playlist: a queue of local media files that OBS plays into one live broadcast. Use OBS’s VLC Video source for an ordered series; VLC must be installed.
- YouTube playlist: a collection of published videos, such as archived live streams and highlights. You organize this after the broadcast; it does not control what OBS plays live.
A scheduled YouTube Live event is created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. OBS acts as the encoder: it sends the media feed to YouTube. The documented workflow still requires you to start the encoder, check the incoming preview, and click Go live.

Schedule the event and prepare OBS
1. Create the scheduled YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage, then schedule a stream. Interface wording can change.
- Enter the event details, including its title, scheduled time, audience setting, visibility, and other metadata.
- Review the scheduled event in Live Control Room. Scheduling makes an upcoming event available for promotion and lets viewers opt in to reminders.
2. Add the recording or playlist to OBS
- Open the OBS scene you will use for the event, or create a new scene.
- For a single recording, add a Media Source, select the local file, and set its playback behavior. OBS documents looping for a single media file.
- For multiple recordings, add a VLC Video source and arrange the media items in the order you want them played. If VLC Video is unavailable in OBS, install VLC and reopen OBS.
- Choose whether the sequence should loop or shuffle using the VLC source’s controls. Check each file’s ending and the start of the next one so you know how the transitions will look and sound.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation lists common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Compatibility can depend on the file and installed components, so test the actual media in your current OBS setup before the event. The OBS article documenting these source behaviors was dated January 11, 2022.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
3. Connect OBS to the scheduled event
- In the scheduled event’s Live Control Room, obtain the stream connection details. In OBS, configure the YouTube service or enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in a screen capture, recording, or shared scene.
- Check that the intended OBS scene is selected and that both video and audio are reaching OBS. Preview the full recording or playlist, including a transition between files if you are using a sequence.
OBS source settings determine how the local media is played; YouTube’s scheduled event determines when the broadcast is presented to viewers. The official instructions reviewed do not establish a built-in control that automatically starts OBS playback and launches the scheduled YouTube event together. Plan for an operator to perform the launch steps unless you have independently configured and tested another automation method.
Launch the scheduled replay
- Prepare the encoder at least two hours before the event, as YouTube Help recommends for an encoder stream.
- Start OBS sending the feed at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, also following YouTube Help’s recommendation.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Confirm the expected video and audio are present before proceeding.
- When ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the feed; this separate YouTube action starts the scheduled event for viewers.
- Monitor the stream and the playlist as it plays. If the source reaches the end and is not set to loop, it will not continue playing the sequence.
After the event: archive and organize the replay
End the broadcast through the encoder and YouTube workflow. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but archive availability should not be your only protection for an important event. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. OBS lets you choose a recording path; check available disk space and test the recording workflow before relying on it.
