How to Schedule Prerecorded Videos for an Always-On YouTube Channel in OBS

Scheduling a YouTube Live event does not schedule or play the prerecorded video. YouTube Studio creates and configures the event; OBS must send the video to YouTube at the right time. For a local setup, prepare a media source or playlist in OBS, connect it to the event’s encoder settings, and keep the OBS computer and its internet connection available for the entire broadcast.

What “schedule a prerecorded video” means on YouTube

There are two separate jobs: scheduling the broadcast and delivering its video. YouTube Studio manages the event page, title, description, visibility, thumbnail, chat and scheduled start time. OBS acts as the encoder: it sends the video and audio to YouTube using the event’s stream settings.

As YouTube Help puts it, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Scheduling the event alone does not make YouTube fetch a file from your computer or start playing an OBS source. OBS—or another encoder or playout service—must supply the video.

For an always-on channel, think of OBS as a continuous feed rather than a calendar-based video scheduler. YouTube’s Live Streaming API likewise models a stream configuration separately from a broadcast event. A stream configuration can be reused for broadcasts at different times; concurrent programs with different settings may need separate streams. The API also describes running a 24/7 broadcast while creating an additional broadcast from the same incoming feed. Those distinctions matter if you later add more than one event or program.

Prepare the YouTube event and OBS source

1. Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room. Choose the option to schedule a stream or create a new stream, using the labels currently shown in your account.
  2. Enter the event details: title, description, visibility, thumbnail, and scheduled start time. Set chat and any other event options you need.
  3. Open the event’s stream or encoder settings and locate the YouTube stream URL and stream key. You will need these in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screenshot, paste it into a public document, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.

For exact current steps, use YouTube’s official encoder setup help. Studio’s labels and event options can change, so follow what the current Live Control Room displays rather than relying on an old screenshot.

2. Add the prerecorded video in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and select the scene you intend to use for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, add a Media Source. Select the prerecorded video file and check the source’s playback options. Enable looping if that file should repeat continuously.
  3. If you need a sequence of videos, build and test an OBS scene or playlist workflow that plays them in the intended order. Do not assume that scheduling a YouTube event will advance files for you; verify the source’s end-of-file and restart behavior in OBS.
  4. Check the preview and audio meters. Confirm that the picture is framed as intended, that sound is present, and that no desktop notifications, private windows, or unrelated sources will appear in the scene.

OBS is running on your computer, so the source file must remain accessible to it. Avoid moving or renaming the file after configuring the source unless you update the source path and test it again.

3. Connect OBS to the scheduled event

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter or select the stream settings associated with the scheduled event. If OBS presents a choice between connecting an account and using a stream key, use the method appropriate to your setup and make sure it is the key or event connection for the event you intend to broadcast.
  2. Apply the settings, then verify that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube channel and event. A valid connection does not by itself prove that the correct prerecorded source is playing.
  3. Start sending the stream from OBS when appropriate for your event. YouTube receiving encoder data and the event being live are distinct states; verify the event’s start behavior before relying on automation.

Never publish your stream key. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS before the next broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand scheduled start and auto-start behavior

Starting the encoder and making the event live are not always the same action. Depending on the event’s settings, OBS may begin sending data while the broadcast still requires a separate go-live action, or the event may transition automatically when data arrives. Check the scheduled event’s current auto-start and auto-stop options in YouTube Studio; do not assume that a scheduled start time alone will start OBS or that starting OBS always makes the event public.

  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Test the full handoff with a private or unlisted event before using it for an unattended channel. Confirm what viewers see before the event starts, when OBS connects, and when the broadcast ends. A test also helps catch a wrong stream key, a source that is not looping, or an event configured to wait for a manual action.

Test the whole run before calling it always-on

  • Beginning: Start OBS and confirm the intended event receives the feed and becomes live as configured.
  • Playback: Let the file reach its end. Verify whether it loops, restarts, or leaves a blank or frozen output; test playlist transitions if you use more than one video.
  • Audio and picture: Check the public-facing playback, not only the OBS preview. Confirm sound, framing and the absence of accidental sources.
  • Interruption: Test what happens if OBS loses its connection or the computer briefly loses internet. Verify whether OBS reconnects, whether YouTube keeps the broadcast open, and what action is needed to restore the feed.
  • Unattended operation: Confirm the computer will not sleep, shut down, restart for updates, lose power, or lose access to the media files during the planned run. Keep an eye on stream health after going live.

A scheduled event is not a resilience plan. With OBS on a local machine, the computer, OBS process, network upload, correct event connection and power availability are all part of the delivery chain. If any of them stops working, the feed can be interrupted.

OBS on a local computer or cloud playout?

Choose based on who should manage playback and what must remain available. A local OBS setup gives you direct control of scenes and the event connection, but it depends on your own machine and connection. Cloud playout can remove the need to keep a computer at home running, but compare each provider’s scheduling controls, file handling, recovery behavior, privacy and terms before relying on it.

Costs and practical trade-offs

OBS itself is only one part of the local setup: you also rely on a computer suitable for the job, electricity, an upload connection that can sustain the feed, and your time to configure and monitor playback. A dedicated computer is optional, but the reviewed material does not establish a suitable model or minimum specification, so choose hardware based on the video and OBS workload you actually plan to run.

Cloud playout replaces the always-on local machine requirement with a provider plan and its file, scheduling and recovery terms. StreamNeo uses the same product on every plan; only the billing period changes. Slots include one always-on stream, 10 GB of pooled storage per slot across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Copyright, permissions and channel policy

Before scheduling a recording, make sure you have the rights needed to stream every video, song, image and other material it contains. A live format does not make copyrighted material permissible, and a stream key does not grant rights to the content. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and region. Replaying videos repeatedly does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization eligibility or reused-content requirements; assess the content and channel against YouTube’s current rules rather than assuming continuous playback qualifies.

Also confirm the event’s visibility and title before going live. Use a private or unlisted test when checking a new source, key or start configuration so you do not accidentally expose a test broadcast to the public.

Troubleshooting common failures

OBS is sending data, but the event is not live

Check the event’s auto-start setting and whether YouTube expects you to use a separate go-live action in the Live Control Room. Confirm you are connected to the scheduled event’s stream settings, not a different key or broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The event is live, but the video is black or frozen

In OBS, inspect the selected scene and Media Source, confirm the file path still works, and check that playback has started. Test the source locally in OBS and verify that the correct scene is active.

The video stops at the end

Check the Media Source loop option or the playlist workflow you configured. Run a test through the end of the file; do not infer repeat behavior from the preview alone.

The stream drops or fails to reconnect

Check the computer’s internet connection and power state, OBS’s connection status and YouTube’s stream health. Verify recovery behavior with a controlled test, then restore the feed and confirm the broadcast is still receiving it. A local setup requires the computer and connection to remain usable for the planned duration.

YouTube receives the wrong event or rejects the connection

Recheck the selected channel and event, the stream URL and key, and whether the key was reset since OBS was configured. If a key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. Avoid sharing the key while asking for help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When this workflow is the right fit

Use OBS when you want local control of the video source and are prepared to keep the computer, OBS and network available throughout the broadcast. Use cloud playout when avoiding a continuously running home computer is the priority; compare the provider’s current controls and terms, and test the YouTube event handoff before relying on an unattended stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists cloud options for continuous prerecorded streaming, including Gyre and Upstream; any reliability or growth claims made by providers should be treated as their own claims, not independent guarantees.
