Scheduling a YouTube Live event does not make sermons play by itself: YouTube provides the event page, while an encoder or hosted service must send the prerecorded video to it. For a short service, schedule one event and feed it from a computer or hosted playback service. For a continuous channel, decide whether you mean one long-running live event or a sequence of scheduled broadcasts; YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a 24/7 setup needs a continuity and archive plan.
Choose what “continuous” means for your church
A scheduled YouTube Live event and the video playback are separate jobs. Scheduling creates a watch page that viewers can visit and set reminders for; the encoder or hosted service supplies the live video and audio. YouTube’s documented flow is to schedule the event in Studio, connect an encoder with the stream URL and key, check its preview, and start the broadcast.

- One scheduled service: A single event runs for the service, then the operator ends it after the final sermon or closing slate.
- A continuous channel: Prerecorded videos play in a loop or sequence. Decide whether your tool will keep one event running or create repeated scheduled events. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one indefinitely running event will produce the archive behavior you want.
For first-time live streaming, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the first service.

Prepare the sermon playlist
Arrange the recordings in the intended order in a playback tool that supports sequential playback and, if needed, looping. YouTube Studio’s event scheduler is not itself a playlist player.

- Play every file through before the broadcast. Check picture, speech and music levels, and transitions between recordings.
- Choose opening and closing slates appropriate to the event. For a loop, make sure the final-to-first transition is intentional.
- Prepare titles, descriptions, thumbnails and captions as needed, and confirm that each file is the version approved for public or unlisted playback.
- Inventory all included material—sermons, guest contributions, worship performances, backing tracks, lyrics, photos, clips and graphics—and verify the rights for both the livestream and any archived replay.
Choose how to send prerecorded video to YouTube
The right playback method depends on who can operate it, whether a computer can remain on, and how the setup handles looping, interruptions and reconnection. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists OBS Studio as open-source software, but it does not document specific current OBS playlist-source or loop-control steps. Confirm those controls in the version you install rather than assuming the event scheduler supplies them.

Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Create a new stream or reuse settings. Set the title, description, thumbnail, visibility, date and time, and audience details. Choose public or unlisted based on how viewers should find the event.
- Save the event and share its watch-page URL with the congregation. Viewers can visit the scheduled page and opt into reminders.
- In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and key for the event. Enter them in the encoder or hosted service. Treat the key like a password: it lets the encoder send content to your channel. If you reset it, update the encoder too.
Check the event’s stream settings before relying on copied configuration. YouTube offers auto-start and auto-stop options, but confirm their state for this specific event rather than assuming a reused setup has the desired behavior.

Test, start and monitor the broadcast
- Start the encoder or hosted playback early enough to inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that video and audio are present and that the correct sermon is playing. When the event is ready, select Go live if the event requires a manual start.
- For a scheduled service, monitor playback through the closing slate, then end the stream deliberately.
- For a continuous channel, confirm how the chosen tool handles the end of the playlist, looping, network loss, encoder restarts and YouTube interruptions. Assign a person to check the stream and its watch page; do not treat a successful initial start as proof that the feed will remain healthy.
Protect the church’s rights and avoid interruptions
The church is responsible for obtaining the rights needed to use all material in its live content, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. A claim on an archived live stream may also appear after the event ends.

YouTube cautions that even licensed material may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. Ask the relevant rights administrator to confirm that the license covers the specific livestream and replay, territory and channel, and to arrange Content ID allowlisting where applicable. Having a license does not by itself guarantee that YouTube’s live systems will not interrupt the feed.
