Use OBS’s VLC Video Source to queue prerecorded podcast episodes and send them to YouTube as a live encoder feed. OBS can play a playlist in order or shuffle it, and it can loop the list; its built-in playlist is not a clock scheduler for starting particular episodes at set times. YouTube Studio scheduling handles the separate job of creating an upcoming live event and letting viewers opt into reminders.

What OBS and YouTube each schedule

Think of the setup as two separate parts. OBS plays the media and encodes the live feed. YouTube Studio creates the live event, its watch page, and—when available to viewers—the option to get a reminder. Scheduling an event in YouTube does not create an episode timetable inside OBS, and an OBS playlist does not create a YouTube event.

The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide documents playlist playback, looping, shuffle, and source visibility behavior. It does not document a native clock-time scheduler for launching individual episodes. If you need “Episode A at 9 a.m., Episode B at noon,” you need a separate automation layer and must test it rather than assume the playlist can do it.

Set up a playlist of podcast episodes in OBS

1. Prepare the media files

Put the prerecorded episodes in a stable local folder and play each file to confirm it works. OBS lists supported media types in its media-source documentation. For several files in sequence, use one VLC Video Source playlist; multiple separate Media Sources do not automatically form a timed queue.

2. Install VLC with the matching architecture

The OBS VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the VLC source is missing from OBS’s source list, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.

3. Create a scene and add the VLC playlist

  1. In OBS, create or select a scene for the podcast stream.

  2. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video Source. The exact menu wording may vary between OBS versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Populate the source’s playlist with the episode files in the order you want them to play.

  4. Check the source properties. “Loop Playlist” is on by default and “Shuffle Playlist” is off by default in the documented settings. Leave shuffle off for a fixed episode order; enable it only if a randomized order is wanted. Turn looping off if the queue should play once and stop.

    • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output

4. Decide what happens when the source is hidden

OBS documents VLC source visibility options, including stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when visible. Choose behavior based on your scene design. If other scenes will be shown during the broadcast, test whether the episode should keep playing, pause, or stop when its source is hidden. Hiding an OBS window is not the same thing as hiding the source from the active scene.

Schedule the YouTube live event

1. Create the event in YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Set the title, description, privacy, and other event details there. YouTube’s live stream settings help and encoder setup guide explain the current workflow. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, and viewers may opt into reminders.

2. Connect OBS to the scheduled stream

Use the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube in OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If the key is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before going live.

3. Confirm eligibility and restrictions

YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance covers channel verification, age eligibility, and restrictions. A channel enabling live streaming for the first time may need to wait up to 24 hours before streaming is available; that is an enablement delay, not a scheduling lead time. Eligibility and restrictions depend on the channel’s status.

Test the full broadcast before relying on it

OBS and YouTube both recommend preparing and checking the stream in advance. Make a short test, inspect the OBS audio meters and output, and preview the signal in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Verify the event is reachable and that the picture, sound, episode order, and scene behavior are correct. YouTube’s streaming tips cover advance setup, preview, and monitoring.

When episodes must begin at specific times

OBS’s documented VLC playlist can play a queue, loop it, shuffle it, and respond to source visibility. It does not establish a built-in clock schedule that starts selected episodes at specified times. For a timetable, a third-party OBS automation plugin may provide another layer, but its installation, compatibility, and scene/source behavior need to be checked for the OBS version in use.

An OBS Project forum thread started on January 2, 2023 discusses one user’s attempt to use Advanced Scene Switcher for scheduled VLC playback and reports a visibility-related pause issue. It is anecdotal, version-sensitive experience—not official support or a guaranteed setup. Consult the plugin’s current documentation and test the exact workflow before relying on it.

Common problems and fixes

VLC Video Source is not available

Install VLC, then confirm its architecture matches OBS. OBS’s documented requirement is 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

The playlist stops after one pass or repeats unexpectedly

Open the VLC Video Source properties and check “Loop Playlist.” It is on by default in the documented settings; turn it off for a single pass. Also confirm “Shuffle Playlist” is set as intended so the playback order is not randomized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playback changes when switching scenes

Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior and test with the actual scenes you will use. The source may stop when not visible or restart when visible depending on its settings; do not assume the episode continues through scene changes.

YouTube does not receive the OBS feed

Check that OBS uses the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube event, that the key is current, and that the channel is eligible to live stream. Preview in Live Control Room before relying on the scheduled start.

The picture arrives but the podcast audio does not

Check OBS’s audio meters while the VLC file is playing, confirm the intended audio source is included in the output, and make a short test recording or stream. Monitoring the YouTube preview helps distinguish a local OBS issue from a problem in the outgoing signal.
