Scheduling an overnight radio show on a 24/7 YouTube channel takes two separate steps: schedule the live event in YouTube Studio, then arrange for an encoder or playout system to send the program feed at the right time. Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not start or sustain the audio and video feed by itself.
Schedule the YouTube live event
- Enable live streaming and check eligibility. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until just before the overnight show.
- Open the scheduling screen. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, open the Manage tab, and choose Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings from a previous one.
- Set the event details. Add the show title, start time, and visibility. Share the upcoming watch-page link if listeners need to find the program in advance. Scheduling lets viewers discover an upcoming event and opt into notifications.
- Connect the feed. Use the scheduled event’s stream URL and stream key in your encoder or playout system. Keep the key private: anyone who can use it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start sending the feed, then check YouTube’s preview for the correct audio and video and confirm that it is attached to the intended event. In the documented scheduled workflow, click Go live after the preview appears, unless auto-start is enabled in the stream settings. YouTube’s live stream settings also include auto-start and auto-stop options.
Check the event’s visibility, start time, and feed before leaving the station unattended. A scheduled watch page and a live, working feed are separate things.

Choose how the overnight program will play
YouTube treats the scheduled broadcast and the incoming stream as separate resources. The broadcast is the event viewers visit; an encoder sends the audio and video that make it live. The station therefore needs a system that starts the feed and keeps it running overnight.

A hardware encoder is optional: YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware. For an Amazon search, “hardware video encoder for YouTube Live” is a reasonable category query, but verify a device’s capabilities and suitability rather than assuming a specific model is required.

Keep a continuous station feed and schedule separate shows
If the channel needs a persistent 24/7 station feed as well as distinct broadcasts—for example, a separately scheduled interview—YouTube’s API documentation describes keeping the continuous feed and creating another broadcast for the individual event. That gives the station both a continuing channel stream and a separate event page for the program.
For this setup, plan and verify the separate broadcast as well as the continuous feed. The event still needs a feed from an encoder or playout system; creating the event alone does not switch the station’s programming.

Plan for archives and replay
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, divide the schedule into shorter broadcasts and keep a local recording as a backup. Do not count on a single archive for an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. Very long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind, so viewers should not be promised unlimited rewind through a continuous broadcast.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it detects such content, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also result in termination.

Having a licence does not always prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Make sure permissions cover the specific tracks and recordings, relevant territories, and both live and archived use. The applicable legal requirements depend on the station and jurisdiction; the platform’s livestream terms require creators to hold the necessary rights, including music licensing rights.
Overnight troubleshooting
- The event is scheduled but nothing is live: Scheduling only creates the broadcast event. Check that the encoder or playout system is sending a feed to the event’s stream URL and key, then complete the preview and Go live step unless auto-start is enabled.
- The feed appears on the wrong event: Confirm that the encoder is using the URL and key associated with the intended scheduled broadcast, not an old or different stream setup.
- The broadcast stops during a music program: Check YouTube Studio for a copyright warning or interruption. Verify the track and recording permissions and, when licensed material is matched, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
- No usable archive appears: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube cautions that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; use shorter segments and a local recording when replay is important.
- Listeners cannot rewind as expected: DVR availability may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Set viewer expectations accordingly rather than treating rewind as guaranteed.
