Choose Scheduled and set an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. That interval sets a cadence for ad breaks; it does not guarantee that an ad will run at every interval or that every viewer will see one at the same time.
Set scheduled mid-rolls in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit → Monetization for the stream and make sure monetization is on.
- Choose Scheduled for the live ad setting, then select an interval: 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes.
- Confirm the settings for the specific stream. Interface labels and controls can change, so check the current options in Studio.
YouTube’s official live monetization guidance describes these controls for live streams generally; it does not document a separate scheduler or special interval behavior for 24/7 streams. It also does not specify a distinct setup workflow, restart behavior, or maximum duration for an always-on stream. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
Choose between automatic, scheduled, and manual ads

YouTube cautions that earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual mid-rolls than with automatic mode. That is platform guidance, not a prediction of results for an individual channel. Monetization being on also turns on pre-roll and display ads for live streams; those are separate from the mid-roll setting.
YouTube states plainly: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” If no ad runs in an available slot, the viewer continues watching the stream. With automatic ads, viewers may not all receive ads at the same time. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream

Reduce interruptions during important moments
In automatic mode, use Delay ads at the top right of Live Control Room when you do not want an automatic mid-roll to interrupt an important moment. YouTube says this delays mid-rolls for 10 minutes and displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display during the delay, so this control does not suppress manual breaks. YouTube Help: Manage mid-roll ads on live streams
Eligible streams may show side-by-side mid-roll ads next to the live stream. YouTube’s help page says streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads. YouTube Help: Manage mid-roll ads on live streams

Check channel defaults and the individual stream
Monetized channels without rights management can set channel-level mid-roll defaults for future live streams. YouTube says channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings. Confirm the chosen ad settings on the individual stream, especially if its configuration differs from the channel default. YouTube Help: Manage mid-roll ads on live streams
What the revenue figure does—and does not—show
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled compared with channels without the feature. YouTube says the comparison was averaged across 207 countries and published in January 2024. It is a platform-level comparison, not a forecast or guarantee for any channel. Optional manual control with Stream Deck
YouTube’s live monetization guidance also mentions inserting ads with an Elgato Stream Deck by downloading the YouTube plugin. This is an optional control for manually triggering breaks; it is not required to configure scheduled intervals in Studio. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
