1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse two different iPhone features for two different problems: Messages’ Send Later queues an outgoing iMessage for a future time, while Focus, contact notification settings and Emergency Bypass affect whether an incoming message produces an alert on the recipient’s phone. To schedule a message, open a conversation, tap Add beside the text field, choose Send Later, select a time, write the message and tap Send. Apple’s current guide allows scheduling up to 14 days ahead and says the recipient is not told that the message was scheduled.
What each iPhone feature actually does
People often use “schedule a text” to mean two opposite tasks. You may want to delay sending something you have already written, or you may want an important message to produce a stronger incoming alert. iPhone handles those tasks in different places.

These controls do not turn a normal SMS or RCS conversation into a scheduled iMessage. Apple’s documentation states, “You must be using iMessage.” Features can also vary by carrier, country or region, so a missing option may reflect availability rather than a mistake in your steps.

The workflow takes place entirely in the Messages app. You can use an existing conversation or begin a new one.
#1 Best Overall
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
- Open Messages. Select the conversation for the person or group, or tap the compose button to start a new conversation.
- Open the add-menu. Tap the Add button next to the text field.
- Choose Send Later. If the option is available, tap it to reveal the scheduling control.
- Set the delivery time. Tap the displayed time and choose the date and time you want the message to leave the conversation. The supported window is up to 14 days in the future.
- Write the message. Enter the text, then review the date, time and recipient as you would for any message.
- Queue it. Tap Send. Messages displays the queued bubble with a dashed outline and its scheduled time.
The dashed outline and time are your confirmation that the message is waiting rather than already delivered. The recipient can be using any device supported by the conversation and is not told that you scheduled the message. Apple says scheduled messages are encrypted and kept on Apple servers only until they are sent; after sending, they are removed from Apple servers. See Apple’s Schedule a text message on iPhone to send later guide for the current interface.
What Send Later requires—and what it cannot schedule
It is an iMessage feature
Send Later requires an iMessage conversation. The feature is not documented as a scheduler for SMS or RCS, so do not assume a green-bubble thread can use it. If the Add menu does not show Send Later, check whether the conversation is using iMessage, whether your device software supports the feature and whether the feature is available for your carrier or region.
The 14-day limit is a feature limit, not a delivery promise
Apple’s current iPhone user guide says you can schedule up to 14 days ahead. That number describes how far the app lets you queue a message; it is not a guarantee that a recipient will read it at that exact instant. Recipient connectivity, device state and service conditions can still affect when the message appears.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scheduled delivery can continue while your devices are offline
Apple says a scheduled message will send even if all of your devices are offline at the scheduled time. This is useful when your iPhone is switched off or disconnected, but it should not be interpreted as a universal guarantee of successful delivery or immediate notice under every network condition.
The sender must be online to change the queue
Leaving a message to send later does not freeze it permanently. Editing, deleting or rescheduling requires the sender to be online and must be done before the delivery time. If you are offline, the queued message remains unchanged until you reconnect.
Use the 14-day window deliberately
Because the maximum is a rolling two weeks rather than an open-ended calendar, choose the closest practical time and create a reminder for anything farther out. For example, a message needed at the start of next month may have to be scheduled when that date enters the 14-day window. Do not create several copies as placeholders: one queued bubble is easier to verify, edit or delete.
Before tapping Send, read the date and time shown by Messages, then check the recipient or group name. The scheduled bubble remains in the conversation, so you can return to that thread and confirm what is waiting. A dashed outline means it is still queued; it does not mean the recipient has received or read it.

Apple’s offline statement applies to the sender’s devices, not to every part of the delivery chain. A powered-off iPhone does not necessarily prevent the scheduled handoff, but a recipient may still be offline, have notifications silenced or experience a service delay. For a deadline, arrange a separate confirmation rather than treating the scheduled time as proof of receipt.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Edit, reschedule, send immediately or cancel
All four controls are available from the scheduled bubble before its delivery time.
- Open the conversation containing the dashed scheduled bubble.
- Edit the message text or delete it: touch and hold the scheduled bubble, then choose the available edit or delete command.
- Change the time: tap Edit beside the date shown above the scheduled message, then tap Edit Time and select a new time.
- Send now: tap Edit, then choose Send Message. The message leaves immediately instead of waiting for its original time.
- Cancel delivery: delete the scheduled bubble before its delivery time. Deleting it cancels the queued send.
After the scheduled time has passed, these pre-send controls no longer apply because the message has already been handed off for delivery. If you cannot see the edit or reschedule commands, first check that the message is still scheduled and that the phone is online.
Make an incoming message more likely to alert you
Send Later controls the sender’s delivery timing. It cannot make another person’s phone ring, vibrate or bypass Do Not Disturb. For an incoming message, the recipient decides which people and apps are allowed through Focus and which contacts receive special treatment.
Allow a person or app in Focus
On the recipient’s iPhone, open Settings > Focus, select the relevant Focus profile and configure its allowed people or apps. The exact options depend on the Focus profile and iOS version. A recipient can permit specific contacts, allow notifications from selected apps, or leave notifications silenced during the Focus period. The sender cannot change these settings remotely.
Apple’s instructions for stopping, muting and changing message notifications are available in Stop, mute, and change message notifications on iPhone. Its Focus guide explains the profile-level controls in Turn on or schedule a Focus on iPhone.
Assign Emergency Bypass to a contact
Emergency Bypass is also configured by the recipient. In Contacts, open the person’s card, tap Edit, choose Ringtone or Text Tone, and turn on Emergency Bypass. The contact’s calls or text tones can then override Focus according to the option enabled. This is a recipient-side notification choice, not a command that the sender can attach to a message.
Understand Focus status sharing
When a recipient shares Focus status, Messages may show that notifications are silenced. Depending on the recipient’s settings, you may be able to mark a message as urgent so the recipient can choose to notify themselves. Treat this as a prompt for the recipient, not as a guaranteed interruption or a bypass controlled by the sender.
Messages from unknown senders and time-sensitive alerts
If the message is from a number or address the recipient does not recognize, notification filtering may be the reason it is missed. On supported versions, the recipient can review Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders > Allow Notifications and check whether the Time Sensitive category is enabled.

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.

Apple’s Screen and filter text messages on iPhone documentation describes these controls. Menu names and the exact availability of the Time Sensitive category can differ by iOS release or region, so use the labels shown on the recipient’s phone. Turning on this category does not guarantee that every unknown message will alert immediately; other notification, Focus and filtering rules still apply.
Sender and recipient responsibilities at a glance
| Question | Sender can do | Recipient must do |
|---|---|---|
| When should the message leave? | Choose a Send Later time within 14 days. | Nothing; delivery timing is set by the queued message. |
| Can the text be changed? | Edit or delete the scheduled bubble while online and before delivery. | Nothing; the recipient cannot edit the sender’s queue. |
| Will the phone make a sound? | Cannot force a sound, vibration or banner. | Allow the person or app in Focus, adjust message notifications or use Emergency Bypass. |
| What if the sender is offline? | Apple says the scheduled send can proceed while all sender devices are offline. | Still needs suitable connectivity and notification settings to notice it. |
| What if the sender is unknown? | Send the iMessage normally. | Review Unknown Senders and the Time Sensitive category where available. |
This split prevents a common mistake: scheduling a message when the real problem is notification visibility. If timing is the issue, use Send Later. If attention is the issue, the recipient has to adjust their own settings.
Choosing the right method for common situations
You need to send a reminder at a precise time
Use Send Later in an iMessage thread. Schedule it close enough to the event that the 14-day limit is not a problem, then verify the dashed bubble and time. If the reminder changes, edit or reschedule it while online rather than creating a duplicate message.
You are writing late at night but do not want to disturb someone
Schedule the outgoing iMessage for a reasonable morning time. This changes when the message is delivered; it does not alter whether the recipient has Focus enabled when the message arrives.
You are waiting for a verification code or urgent request
The recipient should review notification handling for unknown senders and the Time Sensitive category. If the sender is a known contact, the recipient can instead allow that person in Focus or assign Emergency Bypass. The sender should not promise that any of these settings will defeat the recipient’s chosen quiet hours.
You need another person to notice a message immediately
There is no sender-controlled “force alert” switch in Messages. Use an appropriate channel agreed with the recipient, and explain that Focus, mute, volume, connectivity and device state can all affect notice. If the recipient wants a reliable exception for a trusted person, they must configure it themselves.
You need to correct a message after scheduling
Return to the same conversation while online. Touch and hold the scheduled bubble to edit its text or delete it, or use the date’s Edit control to change the time. If the situation has become urgent, choose Send Message rather than creating a second copy.
Troubleshooting when Send Later is missing or fails
- No Send Later option: Confirm that the conversation is iMessage rather than SMS or RCS, then check for software updates and regional or carrier availability. Apple notes that Messages features can vary by carrier, country or region; its overview is in Get started with Messages on iPhone.
- The scheduled bubble is not visible: Reopen the same conversation and look for the dashed outline and scheduled time. Make sure you did tap Send after composing.
- You cannot change the message: The sender must be online, and the scheduled time must not have passed. Reconnect to Wi‑Fi or cellular service and try again.
- The recipient did not notice it: Delivery and notification are separate. Ask the recipient to check Focus, muted conversations, contact notification settings, unknown-sender filtering and device volume. A successful send does not prove that an alert was shown.
- The message arrived at an unexpected time: Check the selected date, time and time zone before scheduling. If it is still queued, use Edit > Edit Time to correct it; otherwise send a follow-up explaining the correction.
- You are relying on an offline send: Apple says the queued message can send while all your devices are offline, but network conditions can still affect delivery or when the recipient sees it. For a critical deadline, verify receipt through a separate channel.
Privacy and practical checks before scheduling
- Confirm the conversation is addressed to the intended person or group; a scheduled message can remain out of sight until the chosen time.
- Read the full message and check attachments, links and dates before tapping Send.
- Use the dashed bubble as the visual confirmation that it is queued.
- Keep the phone or another signed-in device available if you expect to edit, reschedule or cancel later; those changes require you to be online.
- For sensitive information, remember that Apple describes scheduled messages as encrypted while stored on its servers until sending, after which they are removed from Apple servers.
- For an urgent incoming message, coordinate with the recipient about Focus or Emergency Bypass instead of assuming the sender can override their notification choices.
Frequently asked questions
Can I schedule an SMS or RCS message with Send Later?
Apple documents Send Later for iMessage and says, “You must be using iMessage.” It does not document this control as an SMS or RCS scheduler, so a green-bubble conversation may not offer the option.

How far in advance can I schedule an iMessage?
Apple’s current iPhone guide sets the maximum at 14 days ahead. The limit controls how far into the future Messages lets you queue the outgoing iMessage.
Will the recipient know that I scheduled the message?
No. Apple says the recipient is not told that the message was scheduled. They receive the message in the conversation when it is sent.
Can a scheduled message send if my iPhone is turned off?
Apple says a scheduled message can send even when all of the sender’s devices are offline. That statement concerns the sender’s devices; it is not a promise that every recipient will see an alert at an exact moment.
The Tool Desk

Can I change the delivery time after scheduling?
Yes, while the message is still queued and you are online. Tap Edit beside the scheduled date, choose Edit Time, and select the new time.
Can I force someone’s iPhone to alert them?
No. The recipient controls Focus allowances, contact notification settings and Emergency Bypass. You can ask them to configure an exception, but the sender cannot remotely override their choices.
Why might an unknown sender’s urgent message be missed?
The recipient may have notifications for unknown senders or the Time Sensitive category disabled, or another Focus or filtering rule may be active. The recipient can review the Unknown Senders notification settings on their iPhone; labels and availability vary by iOS version and region.
Bottom line: schedule delivery, not someone else’s attention
For an outgoing iMessage, use Add > Send Later, choose a time within 14 days, compose the message and confirm the dashed scheduled bubble. You can edit, reschedule, send immediately or delete it before delivery while online. For an incoming alert, only the recipient can configure Focus allowances, Emergency Bypass and unknown-sender notification categories. Those settings can make a message more noticeable, but neither the sender nor Apple’s scheduler can guarantee that another person will see or respond at a particular moment.

The Bottom Line
Use Send Later to control when an iMessage leaves your conversation; use Focus and notification settings to manage which incoming alerts are allowed through. Scheduling works up to 14 days ahead, requires iMessage, and remains editable or cancellable while you are online and before delivery. No sender-controlled setting can guarantee another person’s attention.
