On Android phones that use the newer Modes interface, open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb. In the mode’s Notification filters > People section, configure which calls may interrupt you. Then create a recurring schedule under Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb > Turn on automatically, add a Time rule, and confirm that the rule is enabled. Menu names differ between Android versions and manufacturers, so use the version-specific path below when these labels are missing.
Which Android instructions apply to your phone?
Google uses two related layouts in its current help: Modes > Do Not Disturb for configuring the mode, and Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb > Turn on automatically for recurring rules. A phone may place both functions under a slightly different heading. Google Android Help cautions, “Settings can vary by phone.” Search Settings for Do Not Disturb or automatic rules if a path does not appear.

|---|---|---|---|
| Current Android phones using Modes | Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb > Notification filters > People | Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb > Turn on automatically | Add or edit a Time rule and leave it turned on. |
| Pixel phone or Pixel Tablet | Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb, then the selected mode’s Notification filters | Use the automatic-rule controls shown in Do Not Disturb | Pixel Help documents these controls for Android 11 and newer. |
| Android 8.1 and earlier | Settings > Sound > Do Not Disturb preferences, using Priority only allows | Automatic rules, then edit or add a Time rule | The newer Modes labels are not expected on these versions. |
Set a recurring Do Not Disturb schedule on current Android
Open Do Not Disturb’s mode settings
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Modes, then Do Not Disturb.
- Review the mode page before changing anything. This is where Android stores the people, app, alarm, and other interruption filters associated with Do Not Disturb.
Add or edit a time rule
- Return to the Do Not Disturb controls if necessary and open Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb > Turn on automatically.
- Tap an existing rule to change it, or choose the option to add a rule and select Time.
- Set the start time, end time, and repeating days offered by your phone.
- Save the rule, then check its switch or status. The rule must be enabled for Android to activate Do Not Disturb automatically.
The schedule is a recurring automation, not a one-time timer. If you need different quiet periods, create separate time rules when your phone offers that option and verify each rule independently.
Understand the schedule’s status
A time rule can exist without being active. After saving, return to Turn on automatically and look for the rule’s enabled switch or status indicator. If it is off, Android will not start Do Not Disturb at the listed times. Check the rule whenever you change the phone’s clock, days, or quiet-hour preferences, and inspect every rule if more than one is listed.

Because manufacturers rearrange settings, the schedule page may be reachable from the mode page, from Sound & vibration, or through a Settings search. The exact label is less important than finding an enabled recurring Time rule attached to Do Not Disturb.
Allow calls from selected people
Use the People notification filter
- Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb.
- Tap Notification filters, then People.
- Set the call control to allow the people you want to reach you while Do Not Disturb is active. The wording for choosing callers can differ by device; follow the allow or block choices shown on that screen.
- Leave the filter saved, then place a test call from an allowed person during the next scheduled quiet period.
The People filter is the list-based exception. It controls who can interrupt through calls (and, depending on the device, messages or conversations). It does not automatically permit every caller and it is separate from the repeat-caller option.
Decide what happens to other calls
After selecting permitted people, review the remaining call option in the People filter. Depending on your Android build, you may be able to block all other calls or allow a broader category. Choose the narrowest setting that matches your goal: a selected-caller list for family or on-call contacts, or a wider allowance when you need more people to reach you.
Recommended Free Tools
Read the labels carefully before leaving this screen. Allowing calls is distinct from allowing messages or conversations, so a contact permitted for one type of interruption may still be blocked for another. If the phone presents separate choices, set calls explicitly rather than assuming a general people setting covers every alert.
Let a repeat caller through without adding them to the list
Do Not Disturb has a separate safety valve called Allow repeat callers. Turn it on in the Do Not Disturb people or calls controls if you want a second call from the same person to interrupt you when that person calls twice within 15 minutes. Google Android Help describes the condition as: “To let a call through if the same person calls twice in 15 minutes, turn on Allow repeat callers.”
- Selected people: the caller is allowed because the People filter permits them.
- Repeat callers: the caller may be allowed temporarily because the same number calls twice in the 15-minute window, even if they are not on your selected list.
Keep the repeat-caller switch off when only explicitly chosen people should interrupt you. Turn it on when an urgent call from an unlisted person is more important than a completely silent schedule.

This is an either-purpose choice, not a replacement for maintaining your caller list. A person who should always reach you belongs in People; a person who should get through only after trying again relies on Allow repeat callers. The second attempt must occur within the documented 15-minute interval, so a single missed call does not satisfy the exception.

Allowing or blocking interruptions determines whether alerts make sound or otherwise break through Do Not Disturb. Android also provides separate display controls for filtered notifications. In the Do Not Disturb settings, review the options for muted sounds and hidden visual notifications if you do not want blocked alerts appearing as banners, icons, or on the lock screen.
- Use the interruption or sound controls to decide whether a notification can make noise or vibrate.
- Use the visual-notification controls to decide whether filtered alerts remain visible.
- Do not assume that a silent notification is hidden; those are separate behaviors.
This distinction explains why a blocked call or alert can still leave a visual trace while making no sound. If your goal is a clean lock screen as well as quiet audio, configure both the interruption behavior and the display behavior.
Pixel phones and tablets
On a Pixel phone or Pixel Tablet, Google documents the route Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb. Open the selected mode’s Notification filters and then People to manage calls, messages, or conversations that may interrupt you.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Modes > Do Not Disturb.
- Open Notification filters > People and set the permitted callers.
- Enable or disable Allow repeat callers independently of the selected-people list.
- Open the automatic Do Not Disturb controls, add a Time rule, set its repeating period, and confirm that the rule is on.
Pixel Help notes that some of its Do Not Disturb steps require Android 11 or newer. A Pixel running an earlier release may expose older preference names instead of the current Modes layout.
Android 8.1 and earlier: use Automatic rules
If Settings shows Do Not Disturb preferences rather than Modes, use the legacy controls:
- Open Settings > Sound > Do Not Disturb preferences.
- Tap Automatic rules.
- Edit a rule such as Weeknight, or add a Time rule.
- Choose the start and end times and the days it should repeat.
- Save the rule and make sure its enabled switch is on.
For callers on these versions, use the Priority only allows controls in Do Not Disturb preferences to define which priority notifications, including permitted calls where supported, can get through. Do not look for the newer People filter if the phone is using this older interface.

The legacy screen is not merely a renamed version of Modes. Its priority controls determine what qualifies as an interruption, while the newer interface presents a People filter for caller choices. Follow the labels your phone actually displays instead of trying to force a newer path onto an older release.
Verify that the schedule and caller exception work
Check the schedule itself
- Reopen Turn on automatically or Automatic rules.
- Confirm the rule covers the current day and that the start and end times are not reversed.
- Check the rule’s enabled status. A saved but disabled rule will not activate.
- If multiple rules exist, inspect each one for overlapping times or a disabled switch.
Check an allowed caller
- Open the active mode’s Notification filters > People.
- Confirm that calls, rather than only messages or conversations, are allowed for the intended person.
- Ask that person to call during the scheduled period, or wait for the next occurrence rather than testing outside the rule’s hours.
Check repeat-caller behavior separately
If an unlisted caller should be able to break through after trying again, verify that Allow repeat callers is on. The exception requires two calls from the same person within 15 minutes; one call alone should not be treated as a repeat-caller event.
Fix common problems
The menu path is missing
Search Settings for Do Not Disturb, automatic rules, or Modes. Manufacturers move these controls and may use different labels. If the search results still do not expose the documented options, consult the device manufacturer’s instructions for that model and Android release.
The rule exists but Do Not Disturb never starts
Open the rule and inspect its status first. Google specifically instructs users to check that the rule is turned on. Then verify its days and times and whether another mode or rule is active at the same time.
The selected caller is still silenced
Return to the active mode’s People filter and check the call allowance, not just the message or conversation settings. Also confirm that you edited the same mode used by the schedule; changing a different mode will not alter the scheduled one.
Blocked alerts remain visible
Open Do Not Disturb’s display settings. Muting interruption sounds and hiding visual notifications are separate controls, so a filtered notification can remain on screen even when it makes no sound.

A repeat call does not break through
Ensure Allow repeat callers is enabled and that both attempts came from the same person within the 15-minute interval. This option is not a replacement for adding a person to the People filter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the caller choices differ
| Policy | People filter | Allow repeat callers | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only named contacts can interrupt | Allow selected callers | Off | Unlisted callers remain blocked during the schedule. |
| Named contacts plus an emergency fallback | Allow selected callers | On | An unlisted caller can interrupt after two calls within 15 minutes. |
| Most callers should reach you | Choose the broader call allowance offered by the device | Optional | Do Not Disturb provides less call filtering; review visual and sound settings separately. |
| No calls during quiet hours | Block calls | Off | Neither selected callers nor repeat callers should interrupt. |
The table separates two decisions that are often confused: who is always trusted and whether persistence from an otherwise unlisted caller counts as an exception. Review both switches whenever your needs change.
Before relying on the schedule
- Identify whether the phone uses Modes or legacy Do Not Disturb preferences.
- Create a recurring Time rule and confirm its enabled state.
- Set the People call allowance for the mode that will run.
- Choose deliberately whether Allow repeat callers is on.
- Decide whether filtered notifications should remain visible.
- Test one permitted call during an active quiet period.
Keep this checklist in mind after a major Android update or when moving to a different manufacturer. A familiar-looking Do Not Disturb tile does not guarantee that the underlying caller and display controls use the same labels.
What changes when you switch Android versions or phones?
Your caller policy does not necessarily transfer one-for-one between interfaces. A newer phone may call the setup area Modes and expose a People filter, while Android 8.1 and earlier use Do Not Disturb preferences, Automatic rules, and Priority only allows. Pixel devices follow the current Modes path on supported releases, with some Pixel guidance limited to Android 11 and newer.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I schedule Do Not Disturb every day on Android?
Open Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb > Turn on automatically, add or edit a Time rule, choose the offered days and times, save it, and confirm that the rule is enabled.
Best Value
How can I allow calls from only certain people?
Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb > Notification filters > People and set the call allowance for the people you want. On Android 8.1 and earlier, use Do Not Disturb preferences > Priority only allows instead.
What does Allow repeat callers mean?
It is separate from the selected-people list. When enabled, the same person can interrupt Do Not Disturb if they call twice within 15 minutes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why can I not find Modes on my phone?
Android menus vary by version and manufacturer. Search Settings for Do Not Disturb or automatic rules. Android 8.1 and earlier use legacy Do Not Disturb preferences rather than the newer Modes labels.
Why is my scheduled rule not turning on?
Reopen Turn on automatically or Automatic rules and verify the rule’s enabled status, repeating days, and start and end times. A saved but disabled rule will not activate.
Why is an allowed caller still blocked?
Check the active mode’s People filter and make sure calls, not only messages or conversations, are allowed. Also confirm that you edited the mode used by the schedule.
Can blocked notifications still appear on screen?
Yes. Muting interruption sounds and hiding visual notifications are separate settings. Review Do Not Disturb’s display controls if filtered alerts should not appear as banners, icons, or lock-screen items.
Do Pixel phones use the same instructions?
Pixel phones and tablets use Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb on supported releases. Pixel Help notes that some of its steps require Android 11 or newer; older Pixels may show legacy preference names.
The Bottom Line
Use the People filter to allow specific callers, create an enabled recurring Time rule under Turn on automatically, and treat Allow repeat callers as a separate 15-minute exception. If your phone shows Do Not Disturb preferences, follow the legacy Automatic rules path instead.
