To show different prerecorded videos at set times on a 24/7 YouTube channel, schedule a YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder or cloud streaming service that can play a playlist and switch videos on a timetable. YouTube Studio schedules the event; it does not, by itself, schedule changes between video files.
What you need to schedule video changes
The workflow has two separate parts: YouTube provides the live event and receives the stream, while an encoder or service selects and sends your prerecorded videos. Before choosing a setup, confirm it supports both scheduled playlist changes and continuous operation. The YouTube Help guidance reviewed covers scheduling and connecting an encoder, but does not document timed switching among prerecorded files.
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live.
- One or more prerecorded video files you have the rights to use.
- An encoder or cloud service that can play those files and switch between them at the times you specify.
- A stable connection from the encoder to YouTube, plus a plan for monitoring, alerts, and recovery.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the schedule
Confirm live access
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance for the latest requirements.
Map the programming before configuring the encoder
Write down each video’s start time, expected duration, and what should play next. Decide what happens if a file ends early, a video is missing, or the schedule has a gap: for example, continue with a fallback playlist if your chosen encoder supports that behavior. Check the service’s documentation for its timezone handling, transition behavior, playlist limits, and whether it can run unattended. These are encoder or service capabilities, not settings established by YouTube Studio.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Manage.
- Choose the option to schedule a stream. Set its title, visibility, description, and other event details. YouTube scheduling can make an upcoming event visible and let viewers opt into reminders; it does not control which prerecorded file is playing.
- Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key for your encoder. The key is a credential: do not share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- In your encoder or service, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key, then configure the playlist and time-based transitions using that product’s own controls.
- Start the encoder’s output and check the preview in Live Control Room. When the preview and event settings are right, start the event as directed in Studio.
For the exact current flow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Studio labels and available options can change.
Choose an encoder for timed video rotation
Software encoder on a computer
YouTube supports software encoders. This can be a practical route if you already have a computer and an encoder that can play local files and automate scheduled playlist changes. The computer, encoder, media storage, and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. YouTube does not prescribe a universal computer model or minimum specification for this setup; check the encoder’s requirements and test your actual playlist.

Dedicated hardware encoder
YouTube also lists hardware encoding and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. A hardware encoder is optional, not a general requirement for scheduling prerecorded video. Before buying one, confirm it supports your chosen ingestion protocol, resolution, file sources, playlist automation, and continuous operation. The cited YouTube guidance does not identify a specific model or establish that hardware encoders generally automate timed file changes.
Cloud encoder or streaming service
A cloud service can keep the media feed running without relying on a computer at home, but capabilities vary. Verify that the service accepts your files, supports time-based switching or playlists, connects to YouTube using a supported protocol, and explains its monitoring and recovery behavior. YouTube’s encoder list includes third-party options such as AWS Elemental MediaLive; that listing alone does not confirm suitability, pricing, or timed-playlist support for your particular workflow.

Set the stream protocol and quality
RTMPS for a typical encoder workflow
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Choose settings that your encoder supports and that fit your available upload connection. YouTube’s encoder settings guide covers codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio, bitrate, and resolution; consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance rather than guessing values. Test the actual output before relying on it for an unattended channel. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers on different devices and network conditions.
When HLS may be relevant
HLS is an alternative ingestion path for certain codec and HDR cases, not a requirement for timed video rotation. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP and specifies transport-stream segments, a rolling playlist, and segment durations between 1 and 4 seconds. Use it only when the encoder and the requirements of your stream call for it; verify the current requirements in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Plan for a real 24/7 operation
Do not assume one event will archive indefinitely
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 event will be archived in the same way, nor does the guidance describe a method to bypass or extend the condition. If archives matter, plan stream restarts or separate archive handling with your encoder or service, and check YouTube’s current behavior before launch.
Test handoffs and failure recovery
Run a test that includes at least one scheduled change from one file to another. Check the preview, picture, audio, event accessibility, and whether the next file starts when intended. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring audio and video quality; see YouTube live-streaming tips.

- Arrange alerts or regular checks for a stopped encoder, dropped connection, or failed video handoff.
- Know whether the encoder or service restarts automatically and resumes the correct scheduled item after a failure.
- Keep a fallback source or content plan if your chosen system supports one.
- Review the schedule after daylight-saving or timezone changes if the encoder uses local time.
The exact restart, monitoring, and backup controls depend on the encoder or service. Confirm them directly in its documentation before counting on uninterrupted operation.
Common problems and fixes
- The event is scheduled, but the video does not change. Studio schedules the live event, not the file rotation. Configure timed playlist changes in the encoder or cloud service and verify its schedule settings.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview. Check that the encoder is sending to the correct stream URL and that the stream key is current. Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed.
- The stream starts, but quality is unstable. Check the encoder’s bitrate and other settings against YouTube’s current guidance and the upload connection available to the encoder. Test the full stream before relying on it.
- A scheduled handoff is late or plays the wrong file. Check the encoder’s timezone, schedule entries, file availability, and playlist order. YouTube Studio does not perform the handoff.
- A long-running stream does not produce the expected archive. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Confirm current platform behavior and plan restarts or separate archive handling.
- The stream stops after a connection or encoder failure. Check whether your chosen system supports automatic restart and recovery, and configure alerts or observation. YouTube’s cited guidance does not define a universal recovery method for third-party encoders.
