To play different videos one after another inside a single YouTube live broadcast, put compatible files in an FFmpeg concat-demuxer list and stream that input. To schedule separate live events for different times, schedule broadcasts in YouTube Live Control Room instead; the clip list does not create or schedule YouTube events.
First decide what “schedule” means
- Play clips in sequence during one live event: FFmpeg can read a fixed list of video files in order and send the resulting stream to YouTube.
- Start separate live events at different times: create or schedule each broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. The YouTube Live Streaming API also manages broadcasts and their associated stream settings; it is separate from FFmpeg’s media playlist.
- Change the playlist while FFmpeg is running: do not assume editing the list will update the active process. The FFmpeg methods below use a prepared input list; a dependable hot-reload procedure is not established by the cited documentation.
Play different videos in one continuous broadcast
1. Check the source files
For the concat demuxer, group files with matching stream layouts and characteristics—especially codecs and time bases. FFmpeg’s documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Check that each file has accurate duration metadata too: the demuxer uses duration information to adjust timestamps, and inaccurate durations can cause gaps or artifacts at joins.
If the files do not match, use the concat filter workflow instead. It decodes and joins inputs in a filter graph, so normalize their video and audio properties before concatenation. This generally requires encoding the output, unlike suitable demuxer cases where concatenation can avoid re-encoding. Which approach fits depends on the actual files and the FFmpeg version installed.
2. Create a concat list
Make a plain-text file named videos.txt with one entry per clip, in the order you want them played:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
file '/path/to/video-a.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-b.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-c.mp4'
Replace each example path with the real path to a source file. Use paths that FFmpeg can access from the machine running the encoder. If a path contains a single quote, escape it using FFmpeg’s concat-list syntax or use a simpler path; the sample assumes paths without embedded quotes.
3. Send the list to YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the event and copy its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Use the event’s encoder settings to select the output format and quality that work for your source and connection.

A typical RTMP/FLV example for a compatible H.264 video and AAC audio source is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i videos.txt
-c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv
"rtmp://YOUR_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the URL and key with the values YouTube provides. The -re option reads the input at its native rate rather than as fast as possible; -f concat selects the concat demuxer, and -safe 0 permits ordinary absolute paths in the list. Stream copying with -c:v copy -c:a copy is appropriate only when the files and output are compatible. If FFmpeg reports codec, timestamp, or output incompatibilities, stop and choose compatible inputs or a concat-filter workflow with encoding rather than treating this sample as universal.

The exact command and output settings depend on codecs, whether every file has audio, your FFmpeg build, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg FAQ on concatenation for the behavior of the installed version.
4. Confirm the event before taking it live
Start FFmpeg and check the YouTube preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube Help says to wait for the preview and then click Go live when the event is ready. Test the actual clip sequence, including joins and audio, before relying on it for a public broadcast. If the audience should not see the test, choose an appropriate private or unlisted event setting.

Schedule distinct broadcasts at different times
For separate viewer-facing events, create or schedule each broadcast in YouTube rather than trying to encode a calendar into videos.txt. Configure FFmpeg with the server URL and stream key for the event being sent, then start the encoder for that event. The YouTube encoder livestream guide covers the Live Control Room workflow and preview step.
If automating event creation, the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes linking live broadcasts with stream resources. For recurring broadcasts with shared encoder settings, it describes reusing a liveStream resource; it also supports a separate liveStream per broadcast. YouTube’s documentation notes that only one event can be live at a time when using a reused stream resource. Choose based on whether the encoder settings recur and how you want events represented to viewers.

Common problems and fixes
- A visible pause, gap, or glitch at a join: check that stream layouts, codecs, and time bases match, and verify the files’ duration metadata. If the sources are not compatible for demuxer concatenation, normalize them with the concat-filter approach.
- FFmpeg errors on stream copy:
-c:v copyand-c:a copydo not convert media. Confirm that the source codecs and streams are accepted by the selected output and YouTube configuration; otherwise use a filter-and-encode workflow. - No audio or inconsistent audio: confirm that each input has the expected audio stream and compatible properties. Files with different audio layouts may need normalization in a filter graph.
- The event does not appear live: confirm that FFmpeg is sending to the server URL and stream key for the intended event, then check the Live Control Room preview and complete its Go live step if required.
- Playlist edits do not affect the stream: stop relying on edits to a list already being read by a running process. Prepare and validate the sequence before starting; a reliable live list reload is not established here.
Archive length and copyright checks
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Platform rules can change, so check the current YouTube guidance before planning an archive around that limit. Only stream videos and audio you have the rights or permissions to use; scheduling a clip does not make copyrighted material permissible.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping an FFmpeg process running on a computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps looping the uploaded video, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the upload streams as made, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
See StreamNeo for the service details, or start the free day.
