You can use a DigitalOcean Droplet to send a rotating sequence of prerecorded videos to a continuous YouTube Live stream, but a YouTube playlist by itself will not create a live broadcast. The Droplet must run software such as an encoder that feeds the videos to a YouTube Live event using its stream URL and key.
What “24/7 YouTube playlist” means
A YouTube playlist is a list of uploaded videos for on-demand playback. A continuous prerecorded-video broadcast is different: YouTube Live receives a feed from an encoder or streaming service, and that feed supplies the videos in sequence. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder documentation also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for streaming prerecorded videos continuously; that listing does not establish a YouTube endorsement or partnership.

This guide covers the self-managed option: a DigitalOcean Droplet runs the media-sequencing and encoding workload, then sends one continuous feed to YouTube Live. It is an architecture and setup guide, not a tested deployment recipe: no particular Droplet size, command, or uptime is established here.

For the least server administration, a managed tool avoids maintaining a Droplet. For more direct control over server configuration and video handling, self-hosting gives you that control while making you responsible for operations and bandwidth planning.

Prepare the YouTube Live destination
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube notes that enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for the event. Scheduling can make the upcoming stream visible to subscribers and allow reminders.
- Prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and enter it with the stream key in the encoder.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository, or configuration file shared with others. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder.
Current Live Control Room labels can change. Confirm the active event’s URL and key in Studio rather than relying on an old screenshot or a key copied for a different event.
Prepare and sequence the videos
Organize the source files
- Put the video files on storage the Droplet can access continuously. A local path on your own computer will not be available to a remote Droplet unless you deliberately transfer or mount the files.
- Write down the intended playback order and check that every file is present, readable, and complete before starting the broadcast.
- Check the actual files’ codecs, resolutions, frame rates, audio formats, and durations. Mixed formats may need normalization or re-encoding for consistent playback.
Choose a sequencing method
FFmpeg documents both a concat demuxer and a concat filter. The demuxer can avoid re-encoding when the files are suitable for direct concatenation; the filter can join inputs through a processing pipeline. Neither option makes arbitrary videos compatible automatically, and the cited FFmpeg FAQ is not a complete, verified recipe for an indefinitely looping YouTube stream.

Configure the media workflow to read the chosen files in order, handle joins as intended, and produce a continuous real-time encoder feed. Test the actual collection, including transitions and audio at file boundaries. Do not assume joins will be seamless or that one example command will work for every mix of formats. Also plan how the sequence repeats or advances after the final file; the precise looping configuration depends on the software you select.

Choose resources for the workload, not a headline network limit
Droplet configuration determines available CPU, memory, disk, and network resources. Encoding workload depends on the output resolution, codec, bitrate, file processing, and what else runs on the server. If the source files need substantial conversion, that can require more CPU than simply passing through compatible media. There is no documented Droplet size here that guarantees a particular 24/7 workload.

DigitalOcean documents maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for standard non-GPU Droplets and 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets (Droplet Limits, verified 19 August 2026). These are platform ceilings, not recommended capacities or assurances of a continuous stream’s performance. Select a plan only after estimating the actual workload and testing it.
Estimate outbound data before launch
A continuously transmitted stream consumes outbound transfer for as long as it runs. As a rough planning calculation, a constant bitrate of B megabits per second running for H hours sends approximately B × H × 0.45 decimal gigabytes, before protocol overhead and variation. For example, a hypothetical 6 Mbps feed running 24 hours sends about 64.8 GB per day by this calculation; it is an estimate, not a DigitalOcean bill or measured result.

DigitalOcean says plan transfer allowances contribute to a pooled team allowance. Additional outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB and inbound transfer is free (Bandwidth Billing, verified 14 September 2026). Check the current allowance across the team, the Droplet plan’s contribution, and current billing terms before deployment. The estimate above uses decimal GB, while billing is stated per GiB, so do not treat the arithmetic as an exact bill.
Configure, test, and monitor the stream
Match the encoder to YouTube’s guidance
Use a supported codec and the settings appropriate for the selected output format. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Set these in the encoder you choose, and confirm its output matches the YouTube event’s requirements. Prefer RTMPS where available.

Test before relying on a 24/7 run
- Start with a short test using the actual files and planned sequence.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. Confirm picture, sound, playback order, and that the feed reaches YouTube.
- Check that the Droplet has enough outbound bandwidth for the selected bitrate and that CPU and memory remain adequate during the test.
- Leave the workflow running long enough to observe file transitions and the sequence’s repeat behavior. Confirm that the process does not stop when it reaches the end of its input list.
- Before making the broadcast continuous, decide how you will receive alerts, restart a failed process, restore access to files, and replace a compromised stream key. These are operational responsibilities, not guarantees provided by DigitalOcean or YouTube.
YouTube advises preparing the encoder ahead of the event, checking the preview, ensuring sufficient outbound bandwidth, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. A 24/7 broadcast needs an equivalent ongoing monitoring and recovery plan.
Troubleshooting common failures

Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights or permissions to broadcast. A playlist of files is not a rights clearance: copyrighted music, footage, or other material can trigger claims or restrictions even when you have a continuous encoder feed. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming rules for your channel and the content you plan to use before scheduling.
Keeping a stream online does not itself establish eligibility for monetization or compliance with YouTube’s reused-content policies. Make sure the channel and videos meet YouTube’s current monetization rules; do not assume that looping or compiling material changes the underlying rights or originality of the content.
