Can you schedule different playlists to play automatically at set times on one YouTube radio livestream? YouTube Studio can schedule when a live stream starts, but its documented controls do not include a way to switch playlists inside one continuous broadcast. For distinct program blocks, schedule separate streams and select the right playlist in your encoder at airtime. To keep one watch page live while playlists change, configure timed changes in the system producing the outgoing feed.
Choose separate scheduled streams or one continuous broadcast
The right setup depends on whether each program should have its own YouTube watch page or the radio should remain on one live page all day. YouTube’s scheduling and encoder instructions describe starting a scheduled stream and sending it a feed; they do not document a Studio control for changing playlists during a live broadcast. The continuous-stream approach therefore depends on playlist automation in your source or encoder, and its exact setup varies by software. YouTube’s encoder instructions and live stream settings explain the documented roles.

Schedule separate streams for distinct programs
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, open Manage, then choose Schedule stream. YouTube’s encoder guide describes this workflow.
- Choose Create new for a separate program, or Reuse settings if a previous stream has suitable settings. Reuse copies metadata, settings, and the stream key, so review the copied title, description, privacy setting, and other details before publishing. YouTube’s live stream settings guide describes reuse behavior.
- Set the date and start time, then give the event a title that identifies the program or playlist. Scheduling creates an upcoming stream page viewers can share; the stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds with a reminder option. - At airtime, set the encoder’s outgoing audio and video source to the intended playlist or program feed. If the encoder is not already configured, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key.
- Wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room, check that the correct program is being sent, and select Go live.
- When the program ends, stop the encoder feed and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Review reused settings carefully
Reusing settings can save setup time, but it can also carry forward details that no longer fit the next show. Confirm the program name, description, privacy, and stream key before making the scheduled page public. Use a clear title for each block so viewers can tell which playlist is next.
Keep one live page and change playlists in the feed
If the radio needs one continuous watch page, schedule and launch the live stream, then arrange timed playlist changes in the source or encoder system that creates its outgoing feed. YouTube’s documentation covers scheduling and sending an encoder feed, but does not specify a built-in YouTube Studio control for switching playlists during that broadcast. The scheduling of the playlist changes is therefore handled outside Studio, in the particular system you use.

- Consult the current instructions for your encoder or source software to configure timed changes.
- Test each transition before promoting the stream, including the audio and video changeover.
- Decide how the workflow handles a playlist that ends early, a missing file, or a failed transition; the answer depends on the source system.

Make the program schedule clear to listeners
A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds. Viewers can open and share its watch page and opt in to a reminder. For recurring programming, state when each block starts and identify its time zone in stream titles, descriptions, and the channel’s schedule information. Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and limits
YouTube Help, accessed in 2026, says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. YouTube also lists concurrent limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are YouTube product limits, not recommended schedule sizes. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance says rewind capability may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. If listeners need a reliable archive or rewind, account for those limits when choosing between a series of shorter scheduled programs and one all-day broadcast. Choose a workflow for your radio schedule
- Choose separate scheduled streams when programs have distinct start times, names, and watch pages, or when individual reminder links help listeners plan.
- Choose one continuous stream when a single live page matters more than separate event pages, and your source or encoder can manage timed playlist changes reliably.
- Compare the operational load: separate events mean more launches and stream-key handling; a continuous broadcast puts playlist automation and transition checks in the source workflow.
- Account for archives and DVR: plan around YouTube’s stated archive behavior for streams under 12 hours and the possible DVR limitations on longer broadcasts.
These are workflow trade-offs based on YouTube’s documented scheduling, encoder, and playback behavior; they do not establish a universal best choice for every channel.
