Use Windows’ built-in Storage Sense to schedule recurring cleanup. Open Settings > System > Storage, enable Storage Sense, then choose a frequency under Run Storage Sense. Windows performs the run when the computer is online and you are signed in; Microsoft does not promise a specific clock time.
Before saving the schedule, review what it is allowed to remove. Temporary files are the routine target, while Downloads, Recycle Bin items and locally cached cloud files depend on separate settings. Storage Sense normally manages the system drive, usually C:, not every drive attached to the computer.

What automatic cleanup does in Windows
Windows accumulates temporary files, delivery-optimization leftovers, thumbnails, old update remnants and other data that may no longer be needed. Storage Sense is the built-in recurring maintenance feature for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its schedule is frequency-based rather than time-of-day based: Microsoft describes runs occurring while you are online and signed in, so a monthly setting does not mean the job will execute at midnight on a particular date.
The feature is designed primarily for the Windows system drive. On most PCs that is C:. It does not automatically sweep every internal, USB or network volume. If another drive needs attention, use that drive’s storage controls or manage its files separately.

Storage Sense is different from a manual cleanup utility. A schedule applies rules you have enabled, whereas manual tools let you inspect categories immediately and decide what to delete each time. The safest setup is to automate low-risk temporary-file cleanup and treat personal folders, cloud files and rollback files as deliberate choices.
Schedule Storage Sense step by step
1. Open the storage settings
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Storage.
- Turn on the Storage Sense switch.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 can present slightly different wording or page layouts. If the switch is not visible immediately, look for the Storage Sense section on the Storage page rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
2. Choose how often it runs
- Open the Storage Sense settings page.
- Find Run Storage Sense.
- Select the frequency that fits your use, such as a recurring interval offered by your Windows edition.
The frequency controls how often Windows evaluates the enabled cleanup rules. It does not schedule a guaranteed clock time. The computer must be online and you must be signed in for the documented run conditions to be met. A portable PC that is usually shut down or offline may therefore perform cleanup later than the nominal interval.
3. Review every removal rule
Stay on the Storage Sense settings page and inspect the individual file-removal choices before leaving the page. Keep routine temporary-file cleanup enabled if that is your goal, but do not assume every category is harmless.
- Temporary files: These are the normal candidates for automated cleanup. Windows can remove unnecessary temporary data according to its built-in rules.
- Recycle Bin: Recycle Bin cleanup is configurable. Enabling it can permanently remove items after the selected retention condition, so recoverable files should not be left there as a backup strategy.
- Downloads: Downloads are not touched unless you explicitly configure Storage Sense to manage them. If enabled, files in that folder can be deleted after the chosen period of non-use. Check the folder first and move anything important to a managed location.
- Cloud-synced content: Cloud-storage management also requires configuration. Storage Sense can make locally available content online-only to reclaim local space; Microsoft says this does not permanently delete the files. Items marked Always keep on this device are exempt.
Microsoft’s overview of these controls is available in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

4. Let the scheduled run occur
After choosing the frequency and rules, close Settings. There is no need to launch a separate cleaner. The next eligible run is governed by the frequency and the online/sign-in conditions. If you need space immediately, use one of the manual methods below instead of waiting for the next scheduled evaluation.
What Storage Sense will and will not clean
| Area | Automatic behavior | Decision you should make |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary files | Can be removed by the enabled Storage Sense rules. | Usually appropriate for recurring maintenance; review the rule on your system. |
| Recycle Bin | Only managed if its cleanup option is configured. | Do not use the bin as long-term storage for files you may need. |
| Downloads | Left alone unless you enable Downloads cleanup. | Enable only after checking that installers, documents and media are backed up or moved. |
| Cloud files | Managed only when cloud-content settings are configured; eligible local copies may become online-only. | Keep important offline copies marked Always keep on this device. |
| System drive | Storage Sense primarily targets the Windows drive, normally C:. |
Use separate controls for other volumes. |
| Other attached drives | Not automatically swept by the same system-drive schedule. | Inspect and clean those drives directly when required. |
These boundaries matter because “automatic disk cleanup” does not mean “delete anything that looks old everywhere.” Storage Sense applies specific rules to specific locations. Its configuration page is the authoritative place to see which choices are enabled on your installation.

For most personal PCs
Use the most frequent option offered by Storage Sense if the computer regularly runs short of space and you are comfortable with the selected temporary-file rules. Leave Downloads cleanup off unless you have a separate filing or backup habit. This combination automates routine clutter without treating a personal folder as disposable.
For infrequently used laptops
A scheduled run may be delayed when the laptop is powered off, asleep without a network connection or not signed in. Pick a frequency that matches the periods when you actually use the machine, and run Cleanup recommendations manually after a long period offline.
For workstations with strict retention needs
Use a less aggressive configuration and inspect categories manually. If a project depends on locally cached cloud content or files in Downloads, exclude those areas from automatic deletion and establish an explicit archival process instead.

Storage Sense handles recurring rules, but Windows also includes a review-first tool for a one-time cleanup. Open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Microsoft describes categories including temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files and unused apps.
Review the categories
- Open Cleanup recommendations from the Storage page.
- Expand each category and inspect the listed items.
- Select only files or applications you no longer need.
- Choose the cleanup action and confirm it.
This route is useful when you want visibility before deletion. Large files may be personal recordings or project assets rather than clutter, and an “unused” application may still be needed occasionally. The review step lets you distinguish reclaimable space from data worth keeping.
Windows may show slightly different categories depending on version, installed applications and whether cloud storage is connected. Microsoft’s storage overview is documented in Storage settings in Windows, with the broader cleanup guidance in Free up drive space in Windows.
Use Disk Cleanup when you need manual control
Disk Cleanup is a separate built-in utility. It is appropriate for a one-time cleanup or when you want to choose categories yourself instead of waiting for Storage Sense.

- Search Windows for Disk Cleanup and open the utility.
- When prompted, choose the drive to examine, normally the Windows drive.
- Review the available file categories and select the ones you understand.
- Confirm the deletion.
The categories shown can differ between systems. Read each description rather than selecting everything by habit. In particular, removing a previous Windows installation deletes the Windows.old rollback files. Microsoft says that operation cannot be undone: once those files are removed, you lose the built-in ability to roll back to that previous installation through them.
Disk Cleanup is manual, so it does not replace a Storage Sense schedule. It is a useful complement when a drive is already nearly full or when a user wants to make a category-by-category decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Advanced scheduling with Task Scheduler
Windows support documentation also references a command-based Disk Cleanup configuration using cleanmgr /sageset. The command saves a set of Disk Cleanup selections, which can then be invoked by a scheduled task. Microsoft’s documented Task Scheduler location is Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > DiskCleanup, where the task is named SilentCleanup.
This is an advanced, version-sensitive route rather than the normal recommendation for Windows 10 or Windows 11. The Microsoft article that mentions it addresses a specific Windows 10 issue, not a current general-purpose scheduling tutorial. Task names, saved options and available categories can vary, so confirm that the command, task and settings exist on your own installation before relying on them.
When this route is appropriate
- You administer a controlled Windows image and need a saved set of Disk Cleanup categories.
- You understand Task Scheduler triggers, permissions and the consequences of running cleanup without an interactive review.
- Storage Sense does not provide the rule granularity you require.
When to avoid it
- You simply want recurring maintenance on a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
- You have not inspected the categories that the saved command will remove.
- You need a guaranteed execution time or cross-drive cleanup; this method does not establish either requirement by itself.
For ordinary recurring cleanup, Storage Sense is the clearest documented path. The version-specific reference is the Microsoft support article The ActiveX is automatically deleted in the Windows 10 (x86) environment.

Clean another drive safely
If the space problem is on a data drive rather than the Windows drive, first identify which volume is full in Settings > System > Storage. Storage Sense’s normal scope is the system drive. Do not assume enabling it will process a second internal disk or an external USB drive.
For another drive, inspect its folders directly, use the storage controls Windows exposes for that volume, or run Disk Cleanup after selecting that drive if the utility offers applicable categories. Personal files should be reviewed before deletion, especially on shared or removable media. A scheduled system-drive rule is not a substitute for a retention policy on data volumes.
Common problems and fixes
Storage Sense is enabled but space has not changed
- Check that the selected rules actually include the type of data occupying space.
- Confirm that the computer has been online and you have been signed in during an eligible run.
- Verify that the full volume is the system drive; a different drive is outside the usual scope.
- Use Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup for an immediate, reviewable pass.
Important files disappeared from Downloads
Downloads cleanup was explicitly enabled, and the files met its non-use condition. Restore them from a backup if one exists, then turn off that rule and move important items out of Downloads. Do not enable the option again until you have a retention process for that folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A cloud file is no longer stored locally
Storage Sense may have applied the configured cloud-content rule and made the item online-only. Microsoft says this does not permanently delete the cloud file. Reopen it while connected or mark it Always keep on this device when an offline copy is required.
A rollback option is missing after manual cleanup
Deleting the previous Windows installation removes the Windows.old rollback files and cannot be undone through Disk Cleanup. Keep that category unselected until you are certain the current Windows installation is stable and you will not need the earlier installation’s rollback path.
The scheduled task is not present
The advanced Disk Cleanup task reference is version-sensitive. If Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > DiskCleanup or SilentCleanup is absent, do not invent a replacement task from an old tutorial. Use Storage Sense for recurring cleanup and Disk Cleanup or Cleanup recommendations for manual work.
Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations and Disk Cleanup compared
| Tool | Automation | Scope and control | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Storage Sense | Recurring frequency; runs when online and signed in. | Primarily the system drive; rules are configured in Settings. | Routine, low-maintenance cleanup of enabled categories. | Overly broad settings can affect Downloads, Recycle Bin or local cloud copies. |
| Cleanup recommendations | Manual. | Review-first categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files and unused apps. | Finding space to reclaim while inspecting items before removal. | A large or “unused” item may still be needed. |
| Disk Cleanup | Manual by default; advanced saved settings and task scheduling are version-sensitive. | Choose a drive and file categories yourself. | Selective one-time cleanup and legacy category control. | Removing a previous Windows installation permanently removes rollback files. |
A safe maintenance checklist
- Confirm which drive is actually low on space.
- Enable Storage Sense from Settings > System > Storage for recurring system-drive maintenance.
- Choose a frequency under Run Storage Sense, remembering that runs depend on being online and signed in.
- Leave Downloads cleanup disabled unless files there are backed up or deliberately disposable.
- Check Recycle Bin and cloud-content settings separately.
- Mark essential cloud files Always keep on this device.
- Use Cleanup recommendations when you want to inspect large files, unused apps or other categories before deleting them.
- Use Disk Cleanup selectively, and do not remove a previous Windows installation until rollback is no longer needed.
- Treat the advanced
cleanmgr /sagesetand SilentCleanup route as version-sensitive, not as a universal replacement for Storage Sense.
For the documented Windows 10 and Windows 11 workflow, Storage Sense provides the practical answer: configure its frequency once, keep personal-file rules conservative, and use the manual tools when you need inspection or a different drive scope.
