You can schedule live mid-rolls without ending a 24/7 YouTube broadcast: in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, turn monetization on and choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. Scheduled mode repeats at an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. The stream can remain live during an ad break, but you cannot guarantee that every viewer will avoid an ad—or that an ad will serve.
What happens to the stream when an ad runs?
A mid-roll ad does not require you to stop the broadcast. YouTube says viewers who are not served an ad continue watching the live stream. Viewers who see an ad can rejoin when it ends or skip it. Ad delivery is not guaranteed, so an interval setting is not a promise that every viewer will see an ad at each break.
YouTube Help describes automatic mid-rolls this way: “YouTube shows mid-roll ads to viewers at natural breakpoints during a live stream.” It also says: “If no ad runs, viewers will continue to watch your live stream.” YouTube’s live-stream monetization help explains the controls and their limitations.
Set up live mid-roll ads in YouTube Studio
- Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Turn monetization on. Open Edit → Monetization and set monetization to On.
- Choose a live ad setting. Under live ad settings, select Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual.
- Set the interval if you chose Scheduled. Choose 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes between ads. This is a repeating interval, not an exact wall-clock appointment or a guarantee of ad delivery.
- Save or apply the setting. Confirm the stream’s settings in Live Control Room. You can use channel-level defaults for future streams if your channel is eligible.
Choose the mode that fits your stream

Pause automatic ads before an important moment
If you use Automatic mode, the Live Control Room’s Delay ads control pauses automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears before automatic ads resume. This can help protect a planned announcement or other high-value moment, but it does not delay manually placed breaks. Set defaults for future streams
Monetized channels without rights management can set channel-level mid-roll defaults in Live Control Room settings. YouTube’s help page says the default is On with automatic medium. Channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings. Check the current Studio labels when setting this up, since controls can change.
Side-by-side ads and the viewer experience
YouTube describes side-by-side mid-rolls as an option on eligible streams: an ad may appear next to the stream with less disruption. This format is not guaranteed for every stream. YouTube also says streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads. Do not treat this option as a way to ensure every viewer receives uninterrupted video.

What YouTube’s revenue figure does—and does not—mean
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour in January 2024. The comparison covered channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads versus channels that did not, across 207 countries. A 24/7 stream still needs a source that keeps sending video to YouTube. Scheduling mid-rolls controls ad breaks; it does not itself keep a stream online. YouTube’s stream settings guidance covers setup context, including scheduled streams appearing as upcoming in subscriber feeds and viewers being able to opt into notifications. It does not describe a separate 24/7 ad mode.

Troubleshoot common ad-break problems
- No ads appear at the interval: A scheduled interval does not guarantee that an ad will serve to every viewer. Confirm monetization is On and the intended mode is selected; ad availability and delivery are not guaranteed.
- Automatic ads interrupt a planned moment: Use Delay ads in the Live Control Room before the moment. It pauses automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes, but will not delay manually inserted breaks.
- Manual breaks do not appear: Manual mode requires you to insert mid-rolls while live. If you insert none, YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served.
- The interval options do not match your expectation: Scheduled mode offers 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. It is a repeating interval rather than an exact clock-time schedule.
- You cannot find channel-level defaults: YouTube says these defaults are available to monetized channels without rights management; channels with rights management currently do not have them.
