To resume a local playlist, you must configure and test your chosen playback and encoder setup separately. What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do
Scheduling an event in YouTube Studio creates a scheduled broadcast and a shareable watch-page URL where viewers can set reminders. It does not, by itself, launch a local playlist or restart your encoder when your PC reboots. You still need an encoder to send video and audio to YouTube when the event is due. The scheduled event and your PC’s startup behavior are separate parts of the setup. YouTube’s published workflow does not promise that local playback restarts, that a playlist resumes at its previous position, or that an encoder relaunches after a reboot. Those behaviors depend on your chosen encoder, playlist player, and operating-system configuration. Verify them on the actual PC rather than assuming they will work.

Prepare the channel, event, and encoder
Check live-stream eligibility
- Make sure the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube lists these as channel requirements in its live-streaming setup guidance.
- Allow time for preparation: YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the broadcast so you can check the preview.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open Manage > Schedule stream.
- Reuse settings from an earlier stream or create a new event. Set the title, privacy, and schedule, then save it.
- Copy the event’s watch-page URL if you want to share it so viewers can set reminders.
Labels and options can change over time; use the current controls in YouTube Studio if they differ from these documented steps.

Connect the encoder with the stream URL and key
Get the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room and enter them in your encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its stream settings guidance. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it publicly. If you reset it, replace the old key in the encoder before broadcasting. You can use a custom reusable key if that suits your setup.
Configure the PC to relaunch playback and encoding
Use the startup or automation controls provided by your chosen operating system, playlist player, and encoder to make the required programs start after reboot. The exact procedure is product- and system-specific; YouTube’s instructions do not provide a universal Windows startup recipe or establish that any particular encoder restores playlist position automatically.

Before relying on the setup, decide what “resume” means for your broadcast. Some setups may restart the playlist from the beginning; others may be configured to begin at a chosen item or position. Confirm the behavior of your own player and encoder rather than assuming they preserve playback state.
Test the reboot before the scheduled broadcast
- Reboot the actual PC well ahead of the event. Check whether it signs in or otherwise reaches the state needed to start the required processes.
- Confirm that the playlist opens and starts playing at the intended point. Check both video and audio.
- Confirm that the encoder launches, reconnects to YouTube, and sends a signal using the correct stream URL and key.
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and verify that the preview appears. YouTube advises checking the preview before starting the stream.
- Separately test the failure path. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to check that the player rolls over to a backup encoder. That tests encoder failover; it does not prove that the playlist itself recovers correctly after a PC reboot.
- During the broadcast, monitor stream health and confirm that any local archive is growing. YouTube’s live-stream preparation guidance recommends monitoring the stream and archive.
Run both the reboot test and any failover test before a broadcast you cannot afford to interrupt. A successful encoder failover test is not a substitute for testing playlist startup and playback after reboot.

Know what happens to the YouTube archive
YouTube says encoder-based streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior does not restart your local playlist or guarantee that a stream will reconnect after a reboot. For longer broadcasts, do not assume the same automatic-archive outcome; consult YouTube’s current encoder streaming guidance.
