How to Schedule a YouTube Livestream Playlist to Change Every 6 Hours

YouTube Studio can schedule a livestream event, but its documented scheduling controls do not rotate a playlist every six hours. To change what viewers see without ending one continuous broadcast, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and configure the six-hour switch in the encoder or playout system that sends video to YouTube. If you instead want a new livestream and watch page every six hours, schedule separate events.

First decide what should happen every six hours

There are two different outcomes people can mean by “change the playlist.” Choose the one that matches your viewers’ experience:

  • Keep one livestream and watch page open: have your encoder or playout system switch the outgoing video feed at the six-hour mark. The broadcast must remain connected while the content changes.
  • Start a new livestream event: schedule separate YouTube events, each with its own event/watch page and start time. Reusing stream settings can reduce setup, but does not rotate content inside one event.

YouTube’s documentation separates the viewer-facing scheduled broadcast from the audio-video stream sent to it. Scheduling creates the event; the encoder or playout workflow supplies the content. Google’s Live Streaming API overview describes those as distinct broadcast and stream resources.

Schedule the YouTube livestream event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Manage tab in Live Control Room.
  2. Choose to schedule a stream. Enter the event details, visibility, and start time. You can create a new event or reuse settings from an earlier stream.
  3. Publish the scheduled event. Viewers can find it in advance, receive reminders, and you can promote it before it starts. YouTube explains this workflow in its encoder livestream setup guide.
  4. In Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.

Configure the six-hour content change

The timed change belongs in the system that creates and sends the video feed—not in the scheduled-event settings in YouTube Studio. Use an encoder or playout system whose current documentation confirms that it can switch the desired playlist or source at the interval you need while keeping the YouTube transmission active.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  1. Build the playlist or source sequence in that system and set the transition interval to six hours, if its controls support that exact timing.
  2. Check whether the interval is measured from the start of playback, the start of the broadcast, or a clock time. Set the start point accordingly; “every six hours” can otherwise drift from your intended schedule.
  3. Confirm whether the transition is seamless or briefly interrupts video or audio. Also check what happens at the end of the playlist, after a source fails, or if the encoder reconnects.
  4. Connect the encoder to YouTube using the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Do not assume that changing playlist items in a YouTube video playlist changes the live feed.

YouTube’s official setup explains how an encoder connects and transmits to the scheduled event, but the reviewed YouTube material does not document a built-in six-hour playlist timer. OBS Project material likewise concerns sending a stream to YouTube, not a verified current timer recipe; check the chosen playout product’s own documentation for its controls and behavior.

Rehearse and start the event safely

  1. Run a private or unlisted rehearsal with the actual playlist, encoder, and YouTube event configuration. Observe at least one timed transition, including its audio, video, order, and whether the broadcast remains live. This verifies your setup rather than relying on the existence of a scheduling setting.
  2. Check the stream key, source order, audio levels, and intended start time. Confirm how the encoder behaves if the network drops or the playback source ends.
  3. Set up the encoder before the event and begin transmitting at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use the Live Control Room preview to check the incoming feed and monitor stream quality. These are YouTube’s published livestream tips.
  4. At the scheduled time, follow the prompts in Live Control Room and your encoder to start the event. Keep monitoring the feed through the six-hour transition; a scheduled event alone does not verify that the playout system switched as intended.

When separate events are the better fit

If viewers should receive a fresh watch page or a distinct scheduled start every six hours, create multiple scheduled broadcast events rather than trying to rotate a playlist inside one continuous feed. YouTube’s API documentation describes recurring broadcasts and reusable stream settings, while each scheduled event has its own content. Reusing settings is not the same as automatic playlist rotation.

Archive length is not playlist rotation

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement concerns whether a stream is archived; it does not provide a six-hour switching feature, guarantee a particular transition, or recommend a stream duration. Plan rotation and archiving as separate matters.

Common problems and fixes

  • The event is scheduled, but no video appears: scheduling does not start the encoder feed. Connect the encoder with the event’s stream URL and key, start transmission, and inspect Live Control Room’s preview.
  • The playlist changes in Studio but the live picture does not: a YouTube video playlist is not the outgoing live feed. Make the change in the encoder or playout system that supplies video to the broadcast.
  • The switch ends or interrupts the broadcast: the selected workflow may be stopping and restarting transmission rather than changing sources within a continuing feed. Test the transition and verify the system’s documented behavior before using it on a public event.
  • The switch happens at the wrong time: verify what event starts the timer and whether the setting means six elapsed hours or a particular clock time. Rehearse using the same start conditions planned for the live event.
  • The preview is missing or poor: check that the encoder is transmitting to the correct event and that the selected source is playing, then monitor the preview and stream quality before the scheduled start.
