Cron starts a command; it does not create a YouTube event, turn a YouTube playlist into a live broadcast, or confirm that YouTube is receiving your feed.
Here, “playlist” means media your encoder plays into a scheduled YouTube Live event. YouTube’s documented workflow separates the event from the encoder feed; its cited instructions do not document native scheduled playback of an arbitrary YouTube channel playlist as a live stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions and live stream settings describe that event-and-encoder workflow.

What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel that can livestream. YouTube’s overview says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the account holder must meet its stated minimum age of 16. Check the current YouTube live-streaming overview because eligibility rules can change.
- An upcoming live event created in YouTube Studio, plus its stream URL and stream key.
- An Ubuntu host that will be running when the cron job fires, with the media, encoder or playback script, required permissions, and a working network connection.
- A confirmed time zone and a tested start procedure. “IST” is ambiguous; use the IANA zone name
Asia/Kolkatawhen you mean India Standard Time.
Create the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Choose Manage, then schedule a stream and set its event details and start time. YouTube describes a scheduled stream as an upcoming event with a watch page that can be promoted and may let viewers set reminders. Follow the current YouTube encoder instructions for the interface available to your account.
- Open the event’s stream settings and obtain the stream URL and stream key. The encoder uses these to send video to YouTube. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs. See YouTube’s stream settings guide.
- Prepare the media input separately. If you mean a YouTube channel playlist rather than local media played by an encoder, do not assume scheduling the event will make YouTube play that playlist; the cited YouTube materials do not describe that feature.
Prepare a script cron can run
Cron runs a command non-interactively as the crontab owner. Put the encoder or playback command in a script, and make its dependencies explicit rather than relying on settings from an interactive terminal.
- Use an absolute path to the script and to programs or media files it calls.
- Set the working directory explicitly inside the script if relative paths are used.
- Provide any required environment variables in the script or crontab. Do not expose the stream key in a public or world-readable location.
- Redirect output to a log you can inspect, and ensure the cron user can write to the log and read the media.
- Make the script executable and run it manually as the same user before adding the schedule. Confirm what happens when the encoder exits or loses its connection; a cron launch alone does not establish that a feed reached YouTube.
The exact encoder command depends on the media and software you choose; the available documentation establishes the YouTube stream URL/key workflow, not a single universal playlist-playback command. Ubuntu’s Noble crontab documentation and POSIX crontab reference describe cron’s schedule and execution context.

Choose how cron interprets India time
Before writing the time fields, determine the cron implementation and host time zone. Ubuntu’s Noble crontab manpage documents CRON_TZ for the cronie implementation, but that does not establish that every Ubuntu cron daemon supports it. Check the installed package and its manpage rather than assuming the directive is portable.
Option 1: Use an explicit cron time zone
If the installed daemon supports CRON_TZ, set it to Asia/Kolkata in the crontab. The scheduled time fields are then interpreted in that zone according to the documented cronie behavior.
Option 2: Use the host’s time zone
If the daemon does not support CRON_TZ, or you prefer not to alter cron’s time basis, leave the schedule in the host’s configured zone and convert your desired India time to that zone. Check the host clock and verify the next run time. Changing the machine time zone can affect other services, so consider who else depends on it.

The Ubuntu Noble documentation describes the first method specifically for cronie; the host’s cron package/version and time zone cannot be inferred from the title alone. Consult the Ubuntu crontab manpage and the installed system documentation before relying on the directive.
Add and verify the cron schedule
For a host whose cron daemon supports the documented time-zone variable, this illustrates a daily start at 8:30 p.m. India time:
CRON_TZ=Asia/Kolkata
30 20 * * * /usr/local/bin/start-youtube-playlist-stream >> /var/log/youtube-stream.log 2>&1This is a schedule shape, not a tested, ready-to-run streaming command. Replace the script and log paths with valid paths on your host, and validate the script, permissions, media input, credentials, and event behavior first.

- Edit the current user’s crontab with
crontab -e, then add the time-zone line if supported and the five-field schedule. The fields are minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. - Save the crontab and confirm it was installed with
crontab -l. - If you instead edit
/etc/cron.d/or/etc/crontab, include the required username field between the time fields and command. Per-user crontabs do not include that field. - Check the host’s clock and cron logs or your redirected application log after a test launch. Verify that the job ran at the intended India time, not merely that the crontab accepted the line.
Run an end-to-end preflight
Test the complete path before relying on an unattended start: the Ubuntu host must be on, the script must find and play its media, the encoder must authenticate with the right event settings, and YouTube must receive the feed. YouTube recommends starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, checking the Live Control Room preview, and then starting the stream. Follow its live-streaming tips.

Test whether your particular event and account require that operator action; cron cannot click it unless you build and validate a separate supported automation path.

The job runs at the wrong clock time
Check which time zone the cron daemon actually uses and whether its implementation supports CRON_TZ. If not, convert the desired Asia/Kolkata time to the host zone. Verify the host clock and a real next run instead of assuming “IST” means the same thing in every configuration.

The cron entry is accepted but nothing starts
Use absolute paths, confirm the script is executable, check that the crontab belongs to the intended user, and inspect the redirected log and cron service logs. Cron has a limited, non-interactive environment, so explicitly set needed paths, working directory, and environment variables.
The encoder starts but YouTube shows no preview
Confirm that the event is the one being targeted and that the encoder is using that event’s current stream URL and key. Check the media input and network path, then inspect the Live Control Room preview. Do not publish a key in logs while diagnosing credentials.

The preview works but the event does not go live
Check whether the Live Control Room requires you to select Go live for that event. YouTube’s documented flow includes that action; unattended start behavior should be confirmed on the actual account and event before depending on it.

The stream stops after launch
Inspect the script and encoder logs, host availability, media readability, and connection stability. Cron starts a process at a matching time; it is not by itself a monitor or proof of continued streaming. YouTube’s live-streaming tips provide guidance for preparing and monitoring an encoder stream.
