How to Schedule a YouTube Live Stream by Weekday Using Python

Python can schedule separate YouTube Live events for each weekday occurrence, but recurrence and video transmission must be handled separately.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Python can create a separate scheduled YouTube Live event for every Tuesday, Friday, or other chosen weekday—but YouTube’s broadcast API does not create a recurring weekday schedule or make a playlist play out as a live stream. Your code must calculate each date and create one broadcast per occurrence. You also need a separate encoder or streaming service to send video to YouTube when each event starts.

First decide what you mean by “YouTube Live playlist”

There are two different jobs that can sound like scheduling a playlist:

  • Schedule a recurring live event: Create a dated YouTube Live broadcast for each occurrence of a weekday and time. Python can automate creating those events.
  • Put videos in a playlist: Add existing videos, such as completed stream archives, to a YouTube playlist. That is a separate API operation.

YouTube documents broadcast scheduling and playlist membership as separate operations. The documented playlist operation adds a video or other resource to a playlist; it does not establish that the playlist itself can be scheduled as a live program or automatically played out as a live stream. If you want prerecorded video to appear as a live feed, you need a separate supported streaming method.

Choose manual scheduling or Python

Approach Best fit What you must manage
YouTube Studio Live Control Room A small number of events or a schedule that changes often. Schedule each event yourself. Studio can reuse settings from a previous stream, but that is not a weekday recurrence rule.
Python and the YouTube Live Streaming API A repeated schedule or a workflow connected to another system. OAuth authorization, time-zone and daylight-saving behavior, duplicate prevention, error handling, and a persistent job runner.

Neither option sends video on its own. A scheduled broadcast is an event; a live stream is the video feed sent to YouTube. Configure an encoder or other supported stream method to send the feed at the scheduled time. YouTube Studio scheduling can make an upcoming stream visible to viewers, who may opt into a notification.

Check channel eligibility and permissions

Before automating anything, confirm that the channel is eligible to go live. YouTube Help guidance requires channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and that the creator be at least 16 years old. Eligibility and policies can change, so check YouTube’s current Live eligibility guidance for the channel you will authorize.

  • Enable the YouTube Live Streaming API in the Google Cloud project used by your application.
  • Authorize the channel owner’s account using OAuth. The broadcast insert endpoint documents the youtube and youtube.force-ssl scopes.
  • Keep OAuth credentials and stream keys out of source control. A stream key is a credential that tells YouTube where to accept the feed.
  • Choose public, private, or unlisted visibility deliberately. Do not assume the channel’s Studio default matches the audience you want.

Plan the weekday in the channel’s local time zone

Pick a named time zone, such as America/New_York or Asia/Kolkata, and define the intended local weekday and start time. Do not store only a fixed UTC hour if the stream is meant to stay at the same local time through daylight-saving changes.

For each occurrence, calculate the next intended local date and time, resolve daylight-saving transitions according to your policy, then convert the resulting aware datetime to ISO 8601. Some local times can be skipped or occur twice when clocks change. Decide whether to move a skipped time forward and which instance to use for an ambiguous repeated time; make that behavior explicit in code and logs.

The API requires the scheduled start to be in the future. Its insert reference advises scheduling within a reliably schedulable horizon but does not state a fixed maximum horizon. A practical job creates events with enough lead time for YouTube to accept them and for you to verify them in Studio, rather than assuming an undocumented number of days.

Create one broadcast per occurrence

The API method liveBroadcasts.insert creates an individual broadcast. Its required information includes a title, a future snippet.scheduledStartTime, and a status.privacyStatus. Accepted privacy values are public, private, and unlisted.

The following request body shows the documented fields, not a complete runnable program. It assumes that you have already created and authorized a YouTube API client, computed an aware future start_time in the chosen time zone, and implemented persistence and exception handling.

broadcast = youtube.liveBroadcasts().insert(
    part="snippet,status",
    body={
        "snippet": {
            "title": title,
            "scheduledStartTime": start_time.isoformat(),
        },
        "status": {
            "privacyStatus": privacy, # public, private, or unlisted
        },
    },
).execute()
  1. Calculate the next occurrence. Determine the next date matching the selected weekday and local start time, using the named time zone and your daylight-saving policy.
  2. Check for an existing record. Look up a durable record keyed to that occurrence before calling the API. This prevents a rerun after a timeout or restart from creating a second event for the same date.
  3. Insert the broadcast. Submit the title, ISO 8601 start time, and intended privacy status using an authorized API client.
  4. Save the result. Store the returned broadcast ID and the occurrence’s local date, time zone, and status. Log failures so you can fix them without blindly resubmitting.
  5. Verify in Studio. Confirm the event appears at the intended local time and has the expected visibility before relying on the schedule.

The API creates the event; your scheduler supplies recurrence. Run the job from a persistent scheduler or service at a cadence that leaves time to detect and repair failures. Use an occurrence ledger or database rather than relying only on a process’s memory.

Send a feed when the scheduled event starts

Creating a broadcast does not capture, encode, or transmit video. Configure an encoder or other supported streaming method to send a feed to the associated YouTube event. A camera-based live production and prerecorded-video playout are different workflows, but both require a feed to reach YouTube. Keep the stream key private, and verify the encoder is using the intended event and key before the start time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add completed videos to a playlist separately

If your goal is to collect completed stream archives in a playlist, use the Data API’s playlistItems.insert after the video exists. The request needs the playlist ID and video resource ID, and the account must be authorized to edit the playlist.

                "videoId": video_id,
            },
        },
    },
).execute()

The endpoint’s documented quota impact is 50 units per call (Google for Developers API reference, accessed 2026). Check that the video exists and that the playlist and video IDs are correct. Handle duplicate membership and unsupported playlist operations as errors; do not treat playlist insertion as part of broadcast scheduling.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The insert request rejects the start time. The time is in the past, was converted incorrectly, or falls outside a reliably schedulable horizon. Log the original local time, named time zone, and converted ISO 8601 timestamp. Recompute a future occurrence and submit it with adequate lead time.
The API reports insufficient permission or the channel cannot go live. The OAuth account, requested scope, or channel eligibility is wrong. Authorize the correct channel with an appropriate documented scope, then confirm verification and current Live eligibility.
The privacy value is rejected or the event has the wrong visibility. The submitted value is invalid or the code assumes a Studio default. Send exactly public, private, or unlisted, and verify the resulting event in Studio.
A rerun creates a second event. The job did not persist the occurrence or returned broadcast ID, or it retried after an uncertain response. Maintain a durable occurrence record and check it before insertion. Record request outcomes and reconcile uncertain failures in Studio before retrying.
The scheduled event exists but viewers see no video. The API created the event but no encoder or other supported method is sending a feed. Check the streaming method, event association, start time, connection, and stream key. Scheduling alone is not transmission.
A playlist insertion fails. The IDs are invalid, authorization cannot edit the playlist, the video is not available, or the operation is unsupported for that playlist. Confirm the video exists and the account can edit the target playlist; check for existing membership and inspect the endpoint error before retrying.
Two streams are created around a clock change at an unexpected time. The recurrence used a fixed UTC offset or did not define behavior for ambiguous or skipped local times. Use a named time zone and explicit daylight-saving rules; inspect the calculated local and UTC times before insertion.

Or let it run in the cloud

If what you actually want is prerecorded video looping as a YouTube Live feed—not Python creating a new weekday broadcast event each time—StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. It does not schedule weekday events or turn a YouTube playlist into a live program; it keeps uploaded video live on YouTube.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist in StreamNeo.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does YouTube’s API support a weekly recurrence field for live broadcasts?

No. The documented insert operation creates a dated broadcast; your Python scheduler must create each occurrence.

Can the same weekday scheduler add the finished stream to a playlist?

Yes, as a separate step after a video exists, using the playlist ID and video ID with the playlist-items operation.

How many quota units does playlist item insertion use?

The Google for Developers API reference documents 50 units per insertion call (accessed 2026).
