How to Schedule a YouTube 24/7 Playlist with OBS and VLC

You can schedule a YouTube live event, play a looping playlist through OBS’s VLC Video source, and have OBS begin streaming at a set time. The schedule, playlist loop, and computer startup are separate jobs: scheduling the event does not make the playlist repeat, and a looping playlist does not keep a computer or stream online after a failure.

What you need—and what “24/7” means here

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, with live streaming enabled.
  • OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will send the stream.
  • Local video files that you have the rights to use, plus enough storage and upload capacity.
  • A scheduled YouTube event, OBS stream settings, and an operating-system task configured to launch OBS at the desired time.

This setup can automate the start of a scheduled broadcast and loop media while OBS remains running. It does not, by itself, guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation, restart OBS after every crash, or recover a dropped YouTube connection. The computer must stay powered on, connected, and able to run OBS. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one scheduled event can serve as a permanent 24/7 broadcast. Check the current YouTube encoder-stream guidance for current event and channel requirements.

Build the playlist in OBS with VLC

Install compatible applications

Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC too; OBS documents that architecture match as necessary for the VLC source to appear. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add and configure the VLC Video source

  1. Open OBS and create or select the scene you want to use.
  2. In the Sources panel, select +, then choose VLC Video Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
  3. In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist and arrange them in the order you want them played.
  4. Confirm Loop Playlist is on if the playlist should repeat. OBS documents this as the default. Confirm Shuffle Playlist is off if you want a fixed order; that is also the documented default.
  5. Set the source’s visibility, audio track, network caching, or subtitle options if your content requires them. Preview the scene and verify that video and audio play as intended.

Use VLC Video for multiple files and playlist controls. OBS’s ordinary Media Source is for an individual media file; do not assume its supported formats exactly match VLC Video’s extended media support. OBS lists formats for Media Source separately in its source documentation.

Schedule the YouTube live event and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select Manage, then choose Schedule Stream. YouTube’s interface labels can change, so consult its current encoder setup instructions if the controls differ.
  2. Create the event or reuse settings as appropriate. Set its title, audience, privacy, and planned start time in YouTube Studio.
  3. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the relevant custom service option, and enter the connection details requested by OBS.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
  5. Before relying on a scheduled launch, start OBS manually and test the connection. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then confirm the event can be viewed from the channel or watch page as intended.

YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. That is a possible wait stated in YouTube Help, not a typical activation-time promise; enable it well before your intended broadcast. Confirm your channel’s current eligibility and restrictions before scheduling.

Choose encoder settings and test the stream

Use settings the connection can sustain and follow YouTube’s current requirements for your target resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with four seconds as the maximum. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings page for the current bitrate table rather than relying on an old copied value: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source files and upload connection; higher settings need more sustained bandwidth.
  • Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval in OBS’s output or encoder controls where available.
  • Prefer RTMPS when configuring the connection, if supported by your selected OBS service setup.
  • Run a test before the actual event. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, and listen for audio issues.

YouTube’s live streaming tips also advise preparing the encoder ahead of the event, starting it before the event time, checking the preview, verifying local archive files, checking that the stream is reachable through channel and watch pages, and monitoring audio and video quality.

Launch OBS automatically at the scheduled time

OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter, which tells OBS to begin streaming when it launches. It also says scheduled-task launches should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory (“Start in…”). See OBS Launch Parameters.

  1. First launch OBS normally, make sure the correct scene and stream settings are saved, and confirm that a manual start works.
  2. In your operating system’s scheduler, create a task for the desired start time that launches OBS with --startstreaming.
  3. Set the task’s working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS specifies for scheduled launches.
  4. Test the exact scheduled task while you are present. Confirm OBS opens the intended profile and scene, connects to YouTube, and appears in Live Control Room.
  5. Keep the computer awake and online for the planned broadcast. Decide separately how you will monitor it and respond if OBS, the network, or YouTube disconnects.

OBS’s launch-parameter page does not give one complete scheduler recipe for every operating system, nor does it promise crash recovery. Windows Task Scheduler, macOS automation, and Linux schedulers have different setup and permissions; follow the scheduler’s current operating-system guidance for your machine. OBS documents macOS invocation examples using Automator and Terminal with open -a "OBS" --args, but still test the actual scheduled launch. Starting OBS at a particular time is not the same as ensuring it will recover after a failure.

Copyright, content rights, and channel policies

Only add videos, music, images, and other material you own or are authorized to stream. A playlist does not grant rights to its contents, and setting a broadcast to repeat does not change copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and channel policies before using third-party material or planning a recurring channel. Keep a local copy of the media and verify that the broadcast is reaching the intended event.

Troubleshooting common failures

VLC Video source is missing

Check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, OBS documents that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC for this source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The playlist stops instead of repeating

Open the VLC Video source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. If files play in an unexpected order, check that Shuffle Playlist is off and review the playlist order.

OBS launches but does not start streaming

Confirm the scheduled task passes --startstreaming, points to the intended OBS installation, and uses the directory containing obs64.exe as its working directory. Test OBS manually as well; an invalid or expired stream key or incorrect server details can prevent connection.

The YouTube preview is blank or stream health is poor

Verify the correct scene and source are visible, media plays in OBS, and the stream is connected to the intended scheduled event. Check the Live Control Room’s preview and health indicators, then reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the upload connection cannot sustain the chosen output. Recheck the current YouTube bitrate recommendations for the selected resolution.

The broadcast does not begin unattended

Check that the computer is powered on and awake, the user session and permissions allow the scheduler to launch OBS, and the network is available at the scheduled time. A scheduled launch does not supply power, prevent sleep, restore an internet connection, or restart a crashed application. Test the complete chain—including the scheduler—before depending on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stream ends before a 24/7 run is complete

A loop setting only repeats the playlist while the source and OBS continue operating. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; plan event duration and any transition to another event around current YouTube guidance rather than assuming one event runs indefinitely.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. You can cancel any time; UPI and cards are accepted in India, with card checkout worldwide. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera-based live broadcasting. To try it, start your free day with StreamNeo.
