YouTube can schedule a live broadcast, but the reviewed YouTube documentation does not establish a feature in YouTube Studio that automatically changes prerecorded playlist content at sunrise. To make that switch, keep one live feed running and configure a playout system or encoder to change its content at the date- and location-specific sunrise trigger.
The key decision comes first: choose which location controls the switch. India does not have one sunrise time, so a schedule needs a selected city or coordinates, a date, and an explicit rule for how that location governs the stream.

Decide what “regional sunrise” means for your stream
Before building a schedule, decide whether one stream changes once using a chosen reference location, or whether separate streams serve different regions and each follows its own location. A single trigger cannot represent every Indian region at once. Choose coordinates for the location that matters to the intended audience and preserve that location and local date with each scheduled sunrise event.

- Separate regional streams: calculate and schedule a distinct trigger for each stream’s chosen location.
- Content policy: decide what plays before and after sunrise, and whether any editorial offset is wanted. There is no universally correct technical buffer; document any offset as your own programming choice.
Understand the three parts of the setup
A scheduled YouTube event and an automated playlist change are separate jobs. Google’s Live Streaming API models the watchable event as a liveBroadcast and the incoming audio/video feed as a liveStream. The broadcast must be bound to a stream, while an encoder or playout system supplies the feed. YouTube’s documented auto-start and auto-stop settings affect broadcast lifecycle; they do not define a sunrise-based playlist change. - Broadcast: the scheduled or active YouTube live event viewers watch.
- Stream feed: the continuous audio/video sent to YouTube by an encoder or playout service.
- Playout automation: the logic that chooses what video or playlist segment is sent through that feed at the sunrise trigger.
Build the sunrise schedule
1. Get a sunrise time for the chosen coordinates and date
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) API reference documents a Sun Moon (Rise/Set) Time endpoint that accepts latitude and longitude; its Jaipur example identifies the returned time as IST. Check current API access requirements and response fields before integrating it: IMD API documentation.
Another option is Sunrise-Sunset.org API v2, which documents coordinate-based requests and local-time output by default, and supports date ranges up to 366 days. Its terms require visible attribution when its data is used. Its changelog reports a calculation correction on September 14, 2026, so verify the current behavior and terms before relying on it: Sunrise-Sunset.org API v2.

NOAA also publishes a solar calculation method based on location and date. Its sunrise convention uses a 90.833° zenith to account approximately for atmospheric refraction and the solar disk. NOAA states theoretical calculation accuracy of about one minute between latitudes ±72° and within ten minutes outside that range; actual observed sunrise can vary with atmospheric conditions. Those figures describe a calculation, not a guarantee of the exact locally observed moment. See NOAA calculation details and NOAA solar calculator information. 2. Preserve the timezone and date
Store each event with its source location, local date, and an explicit timezone or normalized UTC instant. Confirm what the provider returns before converting: the IMD example reports IST, while Sunrise-Sunset.org v2 says local time is the default. Also check the playout scheduler’s configured timezone. A time that looks correct in a dashboard can still fire at the wrong moment if it is interpreted in a different zone.

3. Set the trigger and transition behavior
In the playout layer, associate the calculated time with the content change while keeping the same live feed active. Define the outgoing and incoming items, the exact trigger, and any deliberate editorial offset. The schedule should state whether the switch is based on the selected location’s sunrise on that local calendar date; do not treat a city time as an India-wide sunrise.
Create and connect the YouTube live broadcast
You can schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio or create one through the Live Streaming API. In the API workflow, provide a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status, then bind the broadcast to a stream. The API reference documents ISO 8601 timestamps for scheduledStartTime, as well as auto-start and auto-stop settings. Those controls govern the event lifecycle, not the playlist content switch.

- Create the broadcast: set its title, planned start time, and privacy status in the chosen YouTube workflow.
- Bind the stream: connect the broadcast to the live stream that will carry the feed.
- Connect playout: configure the encoder or playout service to send its output to the stream, and verify the feed is received.
- Keep the feed active through the transition: schedule the playlist change in the playout system, not as an assumed YouTube Studio playlist feature.
Choose where the playout runs
A local encoder or server can supply the feed, but the machine and its network connection generally need to remain available for local playout. Cloud playout can keep processing on a provider’s infrastructure, but playlist and scheduler capabilities vary by service and must be verified directly. For example, YtLive Stream advertises cloud-based continuous broadcasting, playlists, and a scheduler that can launch, pause, or suspend broadcasts at chosen times; these are the provider’s claims, not independent validation. Check its current feature behavior, availability, terms, and cost before relying on it: YtLive Stream.

For this workflow, no particular physical encoder, camera, capture card, or cable is established as necessary. The essential requirement is playout software or a service that can maintain the feed and make the scheduled content change.

Test the complete chain before relying on it
Run a private or otherwise controlled end-to-end test. YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle documentation describes testing and status transitions: broadcast lifecycle transitions.
- Use a test broadcast and confirm the bound stream receives the feed.
- Check the sunrise input against the chosen coordinates, local date, and provider timezone.
- Verify the scheduler’s timezone conversion and inspect the exact trigger time it will use.
- Observe that the intended playlist item changes while the live feed remains active.
- Check broadcast and stream status before and after the transition.
- Repeat with another date and location, and test a manual correction path if sunrise data is unavailable or late.
- Log the source time, converted trigger, and observed transition result so an incorrect switch can be traced.
Troubleshoot common sunrise-switch failures
