How to Schedule a Terminal Script to Monitor Public Registry Changes

To monitor a public package registry automatically, write a script that fetches the metadata or events you care about, compares them with saved state, and sends an alert only when that state changes. Then schedule the script with local cron on a dependable, always-on Unix-like machine, or use a hosted schedule such as GitHub Actions. Scheduling determines when the check runs; the registry interface determines what changes the check can see.

Choose how the script will run

Pick the scheduler based on where you want the job to execute, whether that machine will be available, how predictable the timing needs to be, and how the job receives change information.

Option Where it runs Best fit Important constraint
Local cron A Unix-like machine you control A simple recurring check when that machine is reliably on Environment and behavior vary by cron implementation; scheduled jobs may have a smaller environment than your interactive shell.
GitHub Actions schedule GitHub-hosted workflow runner A script and configuration maintained in a GitHub repository Runs can be delayed under load; a public repository’s scheduled workflows are disabled after 60 days without repository activity.
npm hook An HTTPS receiver you operate, optionally followed by another job Push notifications for supported npm package, scope, or owner changes It is event delivery, not a scheduler by itself; the receiver must validate requests and handle duplicates.

Use cron on a dependable host

Cron is a natural choice when you control a machine that is expected to be running at the scheduled time. Make the job self-contained: specify absolute paths, the working directory, required environment variables, where logs go, and how errors are surfaced. Do not assume a cron job inherits the same PATH or shell setup as your terminal. Cron syntax and extensions differ among implementations; check the documentation for the cron service installed on your host. The Linux crontab reference is useful for Linux systems, but is not a universal specification: Linux crontab manual.

Use a GitHub Actions schedule

A scheduled workflow fits when the script lives in a GitHub repository and hosted execution is acceptable. GitHub documents schedules in POSIX cron syntax. They use UTC by default, run against the latest commit on the default branch, and have a documented minimum interval of five minutes. The workflow file must be on the default branch. GitHub warns that high load can delay runs, particularly at the start of an hour, so choosing another minute may reduce the chance of a delay; it does not guarantee an exact start time. Scheduled workflows in public repositories are disabled after 60 days without repository activity. Check the current GitHub schedule event documentation before relying on a cadence or operational rule.

If an external event should start a workflow rather than waiting for its next scheduled poll, GitHub’s repository_dispatch event can trigger one. The workflow file must still be on the default branch, and the integration requires an API call plus authentication and configuration: GitHub repository_dispatch documentation.

Choose the registry signal

A scheduler does not provide registry history. Decide whether your script will periodically fetch current metadata (polling) or receive pushed events from a registry that offers hooks. Start with a narrow signal—such as a new version or a changed deprecation status—rather than alerting on every metadata field.

Poll metadata for a current-state check

A poller requests public metadata on a cadence, normalizes the fields you care about, compares them with the last successful snapshot, and saves the new snapshot. PyPI documents a JSON API for retrieving project metadata: PyPI JSON API. That makes the API a possible input for a PyPI checker; it should not be treated as a change feed or a record of every intermediate state. If a value changes and changes back between polls, a current-state endpoint may not reveal that temporary change.

Choose a polling frequency based on the detection delay you can accept and the service’s constraints. There is no universal official interval established here. More frequent polling can reduce the wait for a change, but increases requests; slower polling reduces requests while widening the window in which a change may go unnoticed.

Use npm hooks for supported events

npm documents hooks for package, scope, and owner changes. Its hook creation documentation describes specifying the watched object and name, a callback endpoint, and a shared secret: npm hook creation documentation. The event payload documentation covers events including publishing or unpublishing versions, maintainer and dist-tag changes, and deprecation changes. It also describes an x-npm-signature header for receiver-side validation: npm hook payload documentation.

A hook pushes events to your receiver; it does not run a terminal script on a schedule. The receiver needs to be reachable over HTTPS, protect the shared secret, validate the signature, and cope safely with repeated deliveries. The payload’s event timestamp is in milliseconds and can help with logging and replay-attack mitigation. Preserve suitable event identifiers or timestamps so retries do not create duplicate alerts.

Build the check so retries and failures are safe

  1. Define the change precisely. Name the registry and package, then choose the field or event that matters: for example, a new version, a release tag, or deprecation status.
  2. Fetch and normalize. Have the command-line script accept package names or read them from configuration. Request the relevant public API data and convert it to a stable representation before comparing.
  3. Keep the last successful state. Save a snapshot in a durable file or small database, keyed consistently by registry and package. Only replace it after a valid response; a network error or rate limit must not overwrite a good snapshot.
  4. Make alerts idempotent. Notify only when normalized state changes, and record enough state to recognize a retry. This prevents a rerun from sending the same notification repeatedly.
  5. Return useful process status. Exit nonzero on unexpected failures so the scheduler or surrounding monitoring can detect them. Keep credentials out of logs.
  6. Schedule and observe it. Set the working directory, absolute command path, and output capture explicitly. Record the last successful run and alert on repeated execution errors; a silent failure can otherwise look like no registry changes.

Test the script and scheduler separately

  • Run the command manually against known package metadata and confirm the first run stores state without sending a false change alert.
  • Change or simulate a monitored field and confirm that the comparison detects it and emits one notification.
  • Run it again with unchanged data and confirm it does not send a duplicate.
  • Simulate a failed fetch or rate limit and verify the last good snapshot remains intact and the process reports failure.
  • Only after the command behaves correctly, test the scheduled run and alert delivery independently. For hooks, separately verify HTTPS reachability, signature validation, and duplicate-delivery handling.
