To run a Robocopy sync automatically, create a complete Robocopy command, preview its actions with /L, save results to a writable log, and register that command in Windows Task Scheduler. You can configure the task graphically or with schtasks. The account that runs the task must be able to read the source, write the destination, and reach any network path when the task runs unattended.
Choose the copy mode carefully. A normal recursive update can add and replace source files without deleting destination-only data. /MIR is different: it mirrors the source and purges destination files and directories that are not present in the source.

What a scheduled Robocopy job actually does
Robocopy is the file-copy engine; Task Scheduler is the timer and process launcher. Scheduling does not change Robocopy’s rules. Windows starts the command at the trigger time, under the account and security context stored in the task, and Robocopy reads the source, applies the selected switches, writes the destination, and records its result.
A scheduled job therefore has four separate parts:
- Source: the directory whose contents are authoritative.
- Destination: a local folder, external volume, or network share that receives the files.
- Copy policy: for example, copy all subdirectories without purging, or maintain an exact mirror.
- Task context: the trigger, run account, permissions, and path availability used when Windows launches the process.
A command that succeeds in an interactive Command Prompt can fail when scheduled because the task may run as another user, without the same mapped drives, or without access to a network session.

Choose between an update copy and an exact mirror
Non-destructive recursive update
Use /E when the destination should receive the source tree, including empty directories, but destination-only files should remain. A practical starting command is:
robocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /E /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy.log"
/R:2 limits each failed file to two retries, and /W:5 waits five seconds between retries. Bounded values prevent a locked or unavailable file from holding a scheduled task indefinitely.
Exact mirror with purge behavior
/MIR mirrors the directory tree. It is equivalent to /E plus /PURGE, so files and directories that exist only in the destination can be deleted. This is appropriate only when the destination is meant to match the source and deletions are intentional.

Do not select /MIR merely because the job is called a “sync.” If the destination contains independent files, use /E or another non-purging policy instead.
Build and preview the command before scheduling it
1. Create the log location
Create the directory for the log before the first run, such as C:Logs. The task account must be able to create or modify the log file there. A missing or unwritable log directory can make a valid copy command appear to fail without leaving useful evidence.

2. Run a dry run with /L
Add /L to list what Robocopy would do without copying, deleting, or timestamping files:
robocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /E /R:2 /W:5 /L /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy-preview.log"
For a proposed mirror, preview the destructive policy separately:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsrobocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /MIR /R:2 /W:5 /L /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy-preview.log"
Read the preview line by line. Pay particular attention to destination-only files and directories listed for removal. Check spelling, drive letters, and whether the source and destination were accidentally reversed. Remove /L only after the planned operation is acceptable.
3. Decide how logs should behave
/LOG:"path" writes the run to the specified file and overwrites an existing file. /LOG+:"path" appends to the existing file. Overwriting gives you a clean record of the latest run; appending preserves a running history but requires a retention plan so the file does not grow without limit. A dated-log scheme can preserve history, but the command reference does not define a universal retention period, so choose one suitable for your storage and review process.
4. Remove the preview switch for production
The scheduled command should be the reviewed command without /L. Keep the retry and wait values bounded, and retain a log switch so every unattended run can be checked.

Schedule Robocopy in Task Scheduler
The graphical interface is useful when you want to inspect triggers, conditions, and the run account in one place.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
1. Open the task-creation dialog
- Open the Windows Start menu and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open the application, then choose Create Task rather than relying on a temporary basic-task wizard when you need full control over the account and conditions.
- On the General tab, enter a descriptive name such as
Robocopy Sync.
2. Configure the run account
Choose an account that has read permission on the source, write permission on the destination, and permission to create or update the log. The account setting is part of the job’s behavior: a task launched under a service or domain account does not automatically inherit the interactive user’s permissions or drive mappings.
Use the least-privileged account that can complete the copy. If the task must access a network share, confirm that this same account has both the share permission and the destination file-system permission. Decide whether the task needs to run only when that user is logged on or whether it must run unattended; the appropriate choice depends on the environment and security policy.
3. Add a trigger
- Open the Triggers tab and select New.
- Choose the recurrence that matches the workload, such as Daily, then set the start time and enabled state.
- Use the available advanced trigger options only when the environment requires them. There is no universal “correct” cadence; select one based on how often source data changes and how much work each run produces.
4. Add the action
- Open the Actions tab and select New.
- Set Action to Start a program.
- In Program/script, enter
robocopyif the executable is available through the task’s normal system path. - In Add arguments, enter the reviewed arguments, for example:
"C:Source" "D:Backup" /E /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy.log" - Alternatively, place the complete command in a reviewed
.cmdbatch file and set that file as the program. This can make complex quoting and later maintenance easier to inspect. - If using a batch file, ensure its source and log paths are fully qualified and that the run account can read and execute it.
5. Review conditions and settings
Check the Conditions and Settings tabs for restrictions that could prevent an expected run, such as power, idle, or concurrency requirements. Avoid enabling a setting that terminates a long copy before it can finish unless that behavior is deliberate. Save the task, supply the requested account information, and verify the resulting task properties before relying on the schedule.
Create the same schedule with schtasks
schtasks.exe performs the same task-management operations as Scheduled Tasks and can be used interchangeably with the graphical interface. It is useful for repeatable setup, remote administration, or documenting a configuration.

Illustrative daily task
This example creates a daily task at 02:00:
schtasks /create /tn "Robocopy Sync" /tr "robocopy C:Source D:Backup /E /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:C:LogsRobocopy.log" /sc daily /st 02:00 /ru "DOMAINBackupUser"
Adapt the task name, paths, time, and account to the machine. The example is a syntax illustration, not a claim that it has been executed. /TN names the task, /TR supplies the program or command, /SC selects the schedule frequency, /ST supplies a start time where applicable, and /RU specifies the run account.
Paths containing spaces must be quoted correctly. Because nested quotation marks in /TR are easy to misread, a batch file is often clearer: put the Robocopy command in a .cmd file, then make the task action call that file. Keep the file in a location readable by the run account.
Other schedule types
/SC supports minute, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, one-time, at-start, at-logon, idle, and event-based schedules. Select the type that reflects the operational need rather than assuming every backup should run daily.
Query and start a task
After registration, query the task to inspect its stored definition:
schtasks /query /tn "Robocopy Sync" /fo list /v
Start it immediately for a controlled validation:
schtasks /run /tn "Robocopy Sync"
Then inspect both the task’s last-run information and the Robocopy log. A successful task launch only proves that Windows started the action; the log shows whether files were copied, skipped, retried, or denied.
Best Value
Make network paths work in an unattended task
For a network destination, use a UNC path such as \serversharefolder instead of depending on a drive letter mapped in an interactive desktop session. A mapped drive can exist for one user’s logon while being absent from a task running under another account or without an interactive session.
Confirm all of the following under the configured run account:
- The source is reachable at the time the trigger fires.
- The account has share-level and file-system read rights on the source.
- The account has share-level and file-system write rights on the destination.
- The log directory is local or network-accessible and writable.
- Name resolution and network availability are present when the task starts.
Test the exact task context rather than testing only the command in your own console. If policy requires a dedicated service or domain account, configure that account explicitly in the task and grant only the permissions needed for the two paths and log.

- Preview: run the intended command with
/Land inspect the preview log. - Use a harmless destination: when possible, validate first against a test folder containing representative files, including an empty directory and a destination-only file.
- Register the task: save the trigger, action, and run account.
- Launch manually: use Task Scheduler’s run command or
schtasks /runrather than waiting for the first recurrence. - Inspect the log: verify that the source and destination are the intended locations, the expected files were processed, and no access or retry errors remain.
- Check the task result: review the last-run time, completion state, and any task history available on the machine.
- Only then enable unattended recurrence: especially for a command containing
/MIR.
Do not treat a clean task status as proof that every file copied. Robocopy’s log is the record of file-level actions and failures.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No files copied or “access denied” appears | The task account cannot read the source, write the destination, or write the log. | Run the task under the configured account and verify permissions on every path, including the log directory. |
| It works manually but not when scheduled | The scheduled context differs from the interactive session. | Check the task’s run account, whether it runs unattended, and whether mapped drives are unavailable. Replace drive-letter paths with accessible UNC paths for network locations. |
| Unexpected destination files disappear | /MIR or /PURGE is enabled. |
Review the command and run a preview with /L. Use /E when destination-only content must be retained. |
| The log is missing or contains no useful output | The directory does not exist, is not writable, or the logging option points elsewhere. | Create the directory, grant the run account write access, and choose deliberately between /LOG (overwrite) and /LOG+ (append). |
| The task does not start at the expected time | The trigger, enabled state, time, or stored task definition is wrong. | Use schtasks /query or open the task properties to inspect the trigger and run account, then use schtasks /run for an immediate test. |
| A run appears to hang for a long time | Repeated retries or long waits are delaying completion. | Use bounded /R and /W values, then inspect the log for the file or path causing retries. |
Pick settings that match the data and risk
| Decision | Option | Use it when | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copy semantics | /E |
The destination should receive the complete source tree, including empty directories, without automatic purging. | Destination-only files remain. |
| Copy semantics | /MIR |
The destination must represent the source exactly. | Destination-only files and directories can be deleted. |
| Configuration method | Task Scheduler | You want a visual interface for triggers, actions, account settings, conditions, and history. | Changes are made interactively on the machine. |
| Configuration method | schtasks |
You need command-line registration, repeatable setup, or scripted administration. | Quoting and escaping in /TR require careful review. |
| Log policy | /LOG |
You need a current run record. | An existing log is overwritten. |
| Log policy | /LOG+ |
You need one cumulative file for successive runs. | The file grows until you apply your own retention process. |
Final preflight checklist
- The source and destination are fully qualified and correctly ordered.
- You chose
/Eor/MIRdeliberately. - A mirror command was previewed with
/L, and any planned deletions were approved. - The retry count and wait interval are bounded.
- The log directory exists and is writable by the task account.
- You selected overwrite or append logging intentionally.
- The task account can access local and network paths without relying on an interactive drive mapping.
- The task was started manually and its Robocopy log was reviewed.
- The trigger and run account were checked with Task Scheduler or
schtasks /query.
Once those checks pass, the schedule is simply the automation layer around a command you already understand and have safely previewed.
