To schedule a recorded sermon as a YouTube Live event, create a scheduled encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then use software such as OBS to play the sermon recording into that event at the appointed time. Studio creates the event and supplies its stream URL and key; an encoder must send the video. YouTube Studio does not provide a direct control to choose a prerecorded file and schedule it as a Live stream.

Choose between a Live stream, Premiere, and scheduled upload

  • Scheduled encoder livestream: Use this when you want a scheduled Live event and watch page, and your church can run an encoder to send the recording at service time.
  • Premiere: Use this to play an uploaded video with viewers on a scheduled watch page, with reminders and chat. It is not an encoder livestream.
  • Scheduled publishing: Use this when you simply want a private upload to become public at a chosen time, without a Live event.

If you choose the encoder route, the workflow below uses YouTube Studio to schedule the event and OBS to play the local sermon file. This combines the documented capabilities of the two products; YouTube does not describe it as a special Studio feature.

Before scheduling: confirm your channel and recording are ready

Check livestream eligibility

Make sure live streaming is enabled on the church’s YouTube channel before announcing the event. YouTube says initial enablement can take up to 24 hours. Its live-streaming guidance also calls for a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check the channel early, particularly if this will be its first livestream: YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Prepare the sermon file in OBS

In OBS Studio, create a scene for the sermon and add the recording as a Media Source. OBS documents common supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. For a single sermon, leave the Media Source’s loop option off. Decide what viewers should see at the end: if the source is set to hide when playback ends, prepare an intentional ending scene or screen rather than leaving the result to chance. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Schedule the sermon livestream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. The exact labels may change as Studio is updated.
  2. Choose whether to reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new stream.
  3. Enter the sermon’s title and description, and set the date and time. Choose the intended audience and visibility. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility; select the option appropriate to your congregation and how you plan to share the event.
  4. Save the scheduled stream. Use its watch page or event link to share the service details; a scheduled event may also allow viewers to set reminders.
  5. In the Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key for this event. Add them in your encoder’s streaming settings so OBS sends its feed to the right YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented in its live-streaming guide.

Connect OBS and rehearse the playback

  1. In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the server URL and stream key copied from the Live Control Room. Keep the key private: YouTube treats it like a password and address. Do not put it in volunteer instructions, screenshots, or group chats. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s stream-key reset option.
  2. Confirm the sermon Media Source is visible in the scene and that its audio is routed to the stream. Check levels and listen for clipping, silence, or an unintended second audio source.
  3. Set up the encoder well ahead of service. YouTube recommends setting it up at least two hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event.
  4. Start streaming from OBS early enough for the Live Control Room to receive the feed. Check its preview for picture and sound before selecting Go live at the intended time.
  5. Check that the event can be opened from the channel or watch page, including on a mobile device. During the service, have an operator monitor the stream’s audio and video.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, in its encoder settings guidance. Test the chosen encoder settings and watch stream health before and during the event. There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every church: use settings your encoder and available upload connection can sustain reliably rather than treating a generic figure as a guarantee.

End the stream and check the replay

At the end of the sermon, end the event in the Live Control Room and stop sending content from OBS. Then check the resulting recording in YouTube Studio’s Live content area. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer stream.

Copyright and church-channel considerations

A prerecorded service is still a YouTube stream. Before broadcasting, confirm that the church has the necessary rights for every element in the recording, including music, images, readings, and other third-party material. A license to use music in an in-person service does not by itself establish that it covers streaming or an archived replay. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and the terms of any licenses the church relies on. Also consider whether the recording contains personal information or material that should not be public. Choose visibility accordingly and test access before the event.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • You cannot schedule or start a livestream: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the channel is verified, and there are no current restrictions. If this is the channel’s first enablement, allow up to 24 hours.
  • The Live Control Room has no incoming preview: Check that OBS is streaming, that the correct event’s server URL and key were entered, and that the network connection is available. If a key may have been exposed or copied incorrectly, reset it in YouTube and update OBS.
  • The video appears but audio does not: Check the Media Source’s audio and OBS mixer meters, confirm the intended source is active, and listen through the preview before going live.
  • The sermon repeats unexpectedly: Turn off looping in the Media Source for a one-time sermon. If playback ends and the source hides, make sure the scene has an intentional end screen or ending visual.
  • Viewers cannot access the event: Recheck whether it is public, private, or unlisted and share the correct watch page. Private streams require access for the intended viewers; confirm access from a separate device or account before service.
  • The stream is unstable: Test the encoder and connection before the event, reduce settings to what the upload connection can sustain, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s recommended early setup and preview checks help catch issues before the congregation joins.
