To show a pre-recorded church service as a scheduled YouTube Live event, create the event in YouTube Studio, send the recording through an encoder using the event’s stream URL and key, check the incoming preview, then select Go live. Scheduling creates the event page; it does not, by itself, start playback of your recording.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, then choose Manage → Schedule stream.
- Create a new stream or reuse settings. Add the service title and description, set the scheduled date and time, choose privacy, and save.
- Open the saved event and note its scheduled time and watch page. Viewers can share the page and set a reminder for an upcoming stream.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe scheduling as a way to promote an upcoming stream. The encoder still needs to connect and send the service at the event time.

Connect an encoder and prepare the recording
- Open the event’s encoder settings in Live Control Room. If your encoder offers a YouTube sign-in or destination option, select YouTube and choose the correct event.
- If it does not, copy the event’s server/stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the matching encoder fields. The key authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel, so treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Load the recorded service as the encoder’s playback source. Confirm that the video and audio play from beginning to end, that the correct recording is selected, and that the encoder is set to send to the scheduled event.
- Set output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to suit the recording and the available upload connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the selected codec and resolution; a single bitrate is not right for every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery.
YouTube’s settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate as encoder options. Availability depends on the encoder and configuration you use.

Test before the service and go live on time
- Set up and test the full playback and encoder chain ahead of the event. YouTube advises setting up encoders at least two hours in advance in its streaming tips.
- Start the encoder before the scheduled start time so it is sending the recording, then check the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room’s preview.
- When the preview is correct and you are ready for viewers, select Go live in Live Control Room. Keep an operator available to monitor audio, video, and stream health while the service plays.
- At the end, stop the stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Test the upload connection and make sure its available bandwidth can sustain the encoder’s upload bitrate. YouTube’s preparation advice recommends testing the complete setup, checking the preview, and monitoring the stream.

Will YouTube automatically start the recording?
No: scheduling the event creates an upcoming Live event, but YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the encoder to connect and send a feed. Start the encoder with the recording and use Live Control Room to go live; do not assume that saving a schedule will trigger playback of a file already uploaded to YouTube.
Choose between a Live event, a Premiere, and unattended playback

Choose a scheduled Live event when the service needs to be presented as a Live stream and someone can start and supervise the encoder. A Premiere is a simpler fit when the goal is for people to watch an uploaded recording together at a set time, without an encoder-based Live feed.

Copyright and channel checks for a church service
Before scheduling, confirm that your church has permission to broadcast every part of the recording, including music, performances, readings, and any third-party video or images. Being permitted to use a song in an in-person service does not necessarily establish permission to stream or archive it on YouTube. Check applicable licenses and rights for online use, and review YouTube’s current copyright guidance.

Also check that the channel and event are eligible for the intended live-streaming workflow, and that the recording, privacy setting, title, and scheduled time are correct. YouTube’s requirements and interface can change, so consult the linked Help pages when preparing the event.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The scheduled time arrives but viewers see no service: Scheduling does not start the encoder. Start it, confirm the event’s preview receives the feed, then select Go live.
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is running, the correct event is selected, and the server URL and stream key match the event. Verify that the recording is playing and the upload connection is available.
- Video or audio is unstable: Test the connection and lower the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain it. Recheck YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the selected codec and resolution.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong: Preview the recording and encoder output before going live. Confirm the intended audio track, resolution, frame rate, and playback position.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube and replace the old key in the encoder before the next stream.
- The event is not publicly visible: Check its privacy setting and scheduled event details in Live Control Room.
