YouTube Studio can schedule a live event, create its watch page, and let viewers set reminders—but it does not run a 24/7 prerecorded playlist or automatically replace that playlist each month. You need two parts: a scheduled YouTube event and a playout source, such as a computer running an encoder or a cloud service. Prepare the new playlist in that playout system and arrange the changeover there.
What scheduling does—and does not do
Scheduling in YouTube Studio creates an upcoming live event. Viewers can find its watch page and opt into notifications. The live video and audio still need to be sent to YouTube by an encoder or another playout source. YouTube’s documented scheduling workflow does not provide a native monthly playlist swap for a continuous prerecorded stream. Editing a YouTube video playlist does not, by itself, change the feed being sent to a live event.

Plan the event and the playout separately: set up the YouTube event for discovery and reminders, then configure your chosen source to send the content and handle monthly updates.

YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the date you plan to start. Check the channel’s eligibility and available streaming methods in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guide.

Schedule the YouTube event
- Open the scheduling workflow. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live > Manage > Schedule stream.
- Choose the event setup. Reuse settings from an earlier stream or create a new stream. Set the title, description, visibility, date, time, and other event details you need.
- Check the scheduled watch page. Confirm the event appears as upcoming and that its timing and metadata are correct. Viewers can opt into notifications for a scheduled stream.
- Set start and stop behavior deliberately. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop settings, but those controls do not create the video feed. Review the event’s settings and the encoder or playout workflow together so the event behaves as intended. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
YouTube’s step-by-step instructions for scheduling with an encoder are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Prepare a monthly playlist change
- Build the next playlist in the system that actually feeds the stream. This may be the playlist in your local playout software or a cloud playout service. Do not assume a YouTube channel playlist is the same thing as the live feed’s playlist.
- Verify the material. Check file playback, audio, ordering, and rights for every item before the changeover. Confirm that the new playlist is available to the playout system.
- Confirm how and when changes take effect. Ask or test whether the new playlist starts at the next item, at the next loop, at a scheduled boundary, or only after a restart. The behavior depends on the playout system; YouTube’s scheduling documentation does not establish a universal monthly-swap rule.
- Choose a changeover plan. Set the effective time in the playout system if it supports scheduling. Otherwise, arrange an operator to make the change and monitor the transition. Keep the current playlist available until the new one is confirmed live.
Send the continuous feed to YouTube
Option 1: Run an encoder on a computer
YouTube supports computer-based software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the event. Enter those in your encoder’s streaming destination settings, select the playlist or media source, and start sending the stream. Keep the computer, encoder, and internet connection running for as long as the feed must remain live.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields. Treat the key as a password; do not publish or share it.
- Configure the encoder’s media source and start streaming to YouTube.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, check picture and sound, then go live using the event workflow.
- Monitor the broadcast and the playlist transition. A scheduled event does not monitor the encoder or keep a computer from sleeping, losing power, or disconnecting.
Use the exact URL and key shown for the event, and follow the encoder workflow in YouTube’s encoder guide. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before broadcasting again.

A cloud playout service can host the playlist and send it continuously to YouTube from its servers, rather than requiring your personal computer to remain on. Providers describe different playlist and changeover workflows, so verify the details that matter to your schedule: YouTube support, whether changes can be scheduled, exactly when an updated playlist takes effect, recovery behavior, monitoring, support, storage, and current terms. For examples of vendor-described workflows, see Looping Stream and Upstream. Those descriptions are providers’ own claims, not independent performance tests.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Start the encoder or cloud playout before the planned event start, allowing time for YouTube to receive the feed.
- In Live Control Room, confirm the incoming preview and check that both audio and video are present.
- Go live as required by the event’s settings and workflow; scheduling alone does not start a source that is not sending.
- Watch the broadcast status and listen to the actual output. Check again after the monthly playlist change, rather than relying only on a scheduled timestamp.
Decide in advance who will respond if the feed stops. Check the provider or encoder’s reconnection behavior, notification options, backup plan, and support terms; do not treat a vendor’s uptime or recovery marketing as a guarantee.
Plan separately for replays and archives
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a 24/7 session should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay. If keeping an archive matters, make a local recording backup and consider dividing programming into scheduled sessions shorter than 12 hours, leaving operational margin below the limit. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Choose a setup around the monthly changeover
| Approach | What must stay running | Who handles the playlist change | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | The computer or hardware encoder, playout software, and a working network connection | You or an operator, unless the encoder software supports the needed scheduling | Sleep and power settings, reconnection behavior, changeover timing, and monitoring |
| Cloud playout | The service runs the feed from its servers; your home computer need not be the source | Depends on the provider’s playlist and scheduling features | Monthly change behavior, YouTube support, monitoring, recovery, support terms, storage, and current price |
Compare the approaches based on whether a computer must stay on, who will operate the feed, what happens at the playlist boundary, how failures are detected and handled, and whether you need a reliable archive. There is no universal monthly-swap behavior across playout services, so confirm the exact workflow before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
