You can schedule a YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder on a spare laptop to send a looping playlist to it. Scheduling creates the upcoming event; it does not keep the laptop running or create the video feed. For a continuous channel, the laptop must stay powered, connected, and stable, and YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and rights
Confirm live-stream access
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current general guidance sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable streaming before your planned launch rather than on the day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and activation guidance.

Use media you have permission to stream
Prepare a playlist only from videos and audio you have the rights to use for the intended stream, territories, and use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination if the content remains. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Public availability of a song or video is not permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube explains its copyright rules for live streams.

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.

Create a new event or reuse settings. Enter the title and description, choose visibility, and set the date and time with the intended time zone in mind. Check the displayed schedule before saving.

Share the event link. A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming, and viewers may be able to select Notify me to receive a reminder.
Scheduling establishes the event and its watch-page presence; an encoder still has to send the actual video and audio. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the connection between the event and the encoder feed. Studio labels and layout can change, so follow the current interface if a label differs.

Connect the encoder to YouTube

Install or open an encoder that can play your media as a continuous feed. Choose one appropriate for the laptop; YouTube does not publish a universal minimum CPU or RAM specification that guarantees a particular spare laptop will work.

In YouTube Live Control Room, open the scheduled stream’s settings and copy its stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Use the key for this event or the intended reusable setup, as appropriate to the interface.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share it publicly; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Load the rights-cleared playlist into the encoder and configure it to repeat continuously. Confirm that the media plays through in the preview and that audio is present at a sensible level.

Keep the laptop running reliably

Connect the laptop to power, disable sleep while plugged in, and prevent automatic shutdown or restart from interrupting the broadcast.

Place it where its cooling vents are unobstructed. Test the actual device for heat, playback stability, and audio/video sync over an extended run; an older laptop’s ability to encode continuously cannot be assumed from its age or nominal specifications.

Use a stable internet connection. Ethernet can be a useful option where available, but neither wired nor wireless connectivity guarantees an uninterrupted stream.

Test the connection and go live on schedule
Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. Your available upload should exceed the encoder’s selected bitrate with headroom for network variation and other devices using the connection. YouTube’s streaming setup guidance recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand.

Start the encoder early enough to let YouTube receive the feed and show a preview in Live Control Room.

Check the preview, audio, and stream status. Resolve any warning before the scheduled start where possible.

At the event time, start the broadcast as prompted by the encoder and Live Control Room. Confirm that the public watch page is showing the stream.

Monitor the laptop and connection after launch. YouTube notes that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; keep an eye on the encoder and Live Control Room rather than treating a successful start as proof of ongoing stability.

Plan for 24/7 operation and replays
A 24/7 schedule does not mean YouTube will save a complete 24-hour replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR features may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Decide before launch whether a complete replay matters. Keep the original files and consider making a local recording if you need a copy; YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. You could end and restart sessions to create shorter streams, but the cited YouTube guidance does not establish an official restart cadence for a 24/7 channel. A restart also creates an interruption, so weigh archive needs against continuous viewing and notify viewers if your schedule includes breaks.

The stream will not activate: verify the channel and check for a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.

Live Control Room shows no incoming feed: check that the encoder uses the correct stream URL and key for the scheduled event, then confirm the encoder is actually sending.

The stream buffers or disconnects: check upload capacity and competing network use, reduce the encoder’s bitrate if it exceeds sustained capacity, and inspect the laptop’s power, sleep, heat, and connection stability.

The video is live but audio is missing or wrong: check the encoder’s audio source and levels, then verify audio in the Live Control Room preview before relying on the public stream.

YouTube interrupts the stream over third-party content: stop using the matched material unless you have the necessary rights, and resolve the rights issue with the rights holder. Permission alone may not prevent automated matching if the channel is not allowlisted.

The replay is missing or incomplete: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR can be limited or unavailable at that length. Keep source files and plan for local backups or shorter sessions if replay availability is important.
