The simplest method is Apple’s Notes app: open or create a note, tap the Attachments button, choose Scan Documents, capture every page in one session, then tap Done. iPhone saves the complete scan as one PDF inside that note. Which iPhone app should you use?

What you need before scanning
- An iPhone with a working camera and enough storage for the images and PDF.
- Flat pages on a reasonably contrasting surface. Even lighting reduces shadows and glare.
- All pages within reach so you can keep the scan session open. You can reorder or correct pages later, but scanning in the intended order is faster.
- The Apple app you want to use: Notes, Files, or Preview. No separate scanner, phone stand, or consumable is required for this software-based workflow.
Place the document so all four edges are visible. Keep the phone parallel to the page when possible; a steep angle makes corners harder for automatic detection to identify.

Scan several pages into one PDF with Notes
Notes is the most convenient route when the document belongs with meeting notes, a project record, or another note. Apple’s Notes scanning flow keeps every page in the same scanned document until you finish.
- Open Notes and select an existing note, or create a new note.
- Tap the Attachments button in the note, then choose Scan Documents.
- Position the first page in the camera view. When the page edges are detected, iPhone can capture it automatically. Keep the phone steady until the capture completes.
- If automatic capture is inconvenient, switch to manual capture and tap the shutter yourself. Adjust the detected corners so they sit on the actual page edges, not on a shadow or the table.
- Replace the first page with the next one and continue scanning. Do not tap Done between pages; that ends the current scan session.
- After the final page, tap Done. Notes saves the scanned document as a PDF in the note.
The scan is an attachment in that note, so opening the note later provides a way to find the document without searching a general file directory. If you need a conventional file path, use the share or copy actions described below to send it to Files.
When Notes is the better choice
- You want a short explanation, checklist, or other context stored next to the pages.
- You expect to annotate, crop, rotate, or insert a page while reviewing the document.
- You will share the PDF from the note rather than maintain a folder-based archive.
Save a multi-page scan directly in Files
Use Files when the destination matters more than the note around it. This flow lets you choose a folder or another available Files location at the end instead of embedding the scan in a note.

- Open Files.
- Tap More, then choose Scan Documents.
- Frame the first page and capture it. Automatic edge detection can take the picture for you; manual capture is available when you want to control the timing.
- Continue with every remaining page while the scanner remains open. Correct the page corners after each capture when the detected outline is inaccurate.
- Tap Done only after the final page.
- Choose the folder or other Files location where you want the document stored, then tap Save.
Because you select the destination after scanning, decide in advance whether the file belongs in an iCloud Drive folder, an on-device folder, or another location shown by Files. The visible choices depend on the storage services and folders configured on your iPhone.
When Files is the better choice
- You need the PDF to appear in a particular folder immediately.
- You are preparing a file for upload to a work, school, or government portal.
- You do not want the scan tied to a note that may contain unrelated material.
Create and edit one PDF in Preview
Preview provides a PDF-oriented route. Apple’s Preview documentation says that it combines the pages you scan into one PDF, which you can then save and edit.
- Open Preview and tap Scan Documents.
- Capture the first page, allowing automatic detection or using manual capture as needed.
- Repeat the capture for each additional page. Keep the pages in the order you want them to appear.
- Tap Done after the last page. Preview combines the captured pages into a single PDF.
- Save the PDF to the location you choose.
Preview’s page thumbnails provide controls for common corrections. Select a thumbnail to crop a page, rotate it, or adjust the scan’s coloring before you save the finished file. This is useful when a page was captured upside down, includes too much background, or needs a different color treatment for readability.
Automatic capture, manual capture, and corner correction
The scanning camera can watch for page edges and take a picture automatically. This is efficient for a stack of loose pages when the surface is well lit and the page boundary contrasts with the background.

- Switch to manual capture when the camera keeps triggering too early, misses an edge, or you need to control exactly when the picture is taken.
- Adjust corners whenever the outline includes a shadow, binder edge, or part of the table. A precise crop is easier to read and produces a cleaner PDF.
For glossy pages, move the light source or change the phone angle slightly to remove reflections. For dark paper or a dark desk, place a lighter sheet underneath so the edge detector can distinguish the page.

How to keep pages in the right order
- Arrange loose sheets before opening the scanner.
- Capture page 1, then replace it with page 2 without finishing the session.
- Check the preview or thumbnail after each capture, especially when pages look similar.
- If a page is upside down or out of sequence, correct it before sharing. Notes and Preview provide page-level editing; Files is primarily the save-and-organize route.
For double-sided documents, scan the front and back as separate pages in the order a reader should encounter them. The scanner does not infer missing sides or automatically reconstruct a duplex sequence.
Edit a scan after it has been captured
Corrections in Notes
Apple’s Notes PDF tools allow you to rotate pages, crop scanned pages, and insert a blank page. Open the scanned PDF attachment in the note, use its document controls, and select the page that needs a change. Cropping removes excess desk area; rotating fixes an orientation mistake; inserting a blank page can preserve a deliberate separator in a form or packet.
After correcting the document, use Notes’ copy or share action to send the PDF to another app, a person, or a Files location. Sharing exports the document; it does not require you to rescan the paper.

Preview exposes page thumbnails for PDF editing. Select a thumbnail to crop, rotate, or adjust scan coloring, then save the revised PDF. Review every thumbnail before saving if the document contains forms, signatures, or small print, because an aggressive crop can remove information close to the edge.
Find the PDF after scanning
If you used Notes
The PDF is stored as an attachment in the note you selected. Open Notes, locate that note, and tap the scanned document. To place a copy in a folder, use the document’s share or copy command and choose Files as the destination.
If you used Files
The file is in the folder you selected immediately before tapping Save. If you cannot see it, check the location shown in the save dialog and use Files’ search for the filename or the PDF file type.
If you used Preview
Preview saves the combined PDF to the location you select. Use the save destination shown by Preview, then open Files if you need to rename or move the document.
Share the finished PDF
- Open the note, Files folder, or Preview document containing the scan.
- Open the PDF and tap the share control.
- Choose the destination, such as Mail, Messages, a cloud-storage action, or Files.
- Before sending, verify that the attachment is the combined PDF rather than an individual page image.
For a long document, wait for the share sheet to finish preparing the file before switching apps. If a recipient reports a missing page, return to the original scan and inspect its page thumbnails rather than creating a second unrelated PDF.

Troubleshooting common scanning problems
The camera will not capture automatically
Make all four page edges visible, improve the contrast between the paper and its background, and hold the iPhone steadier. If detection still fails, use manual capture and set the corners yourself.
The page is skewed or includes the table
Open the page correction controls and move each corner to the true edge of the paper. If the perspective is severe, recapture the page with the phone more parallel to the surface.
A page was captured too early
Use manual capture for the remainder of the session. This prevents the scanner from taking a picture while you are still positioning the page.
The scan is hard to read
Reduce glare, use brighter diffuse light, and keep fingers and shadows away from the text. In Preview, try a different scan-color adjustment; in Notes, crop away distracting background without cutting into the page.
The PDF has fewer pages than expected
You may have finished the session before scanning all sheets. Reopen the original document and inspect its thumbnails. If a page is absent, scan that page separately and insert it in Notes, or create a replacement sequence in Preview. Files’ scan flow ends when you tap Done, so pages placed on the table afterward are not added automatically.
You cannot find the saved file
Identify the app used: Notes keeps the PDF in the selected note, Files uses the folder chosen at save time, and Preview uses its selected save location. Search the relevant app rather than assuming every scan appears in the same directory.
A reliable start-to-finish checklist
For a clean result, decide the destination before you open the camera. Choose Notes if the pages belong with explanatory material, Files if a folder is the priority, or Preview if you intend to refine the PDF immediately. Put the sheets in order, clear enough space to replace each page, and check that the camera lens is unobstructed.
- Place the first sheet on a flat, contrasting surface with all edges visible.
- Open the chosen app and start Scan Documents.
- Use automatic capture only when the phone and page can remain steady; otherwise select manual capture.
- Inspect the outline and correct every corner that lands on a shadow, table edge, or binder.
- Replace each sheet without ending the session, checking the resulting thumbnail as you go.
- Tap Done only after the final page, then save or confirm the PDF in the app’s stated destination.
- Open the finished document once before sharing so you can check page count, orientation, cropping, and legibility.
This sequence avoids the most common mistake: producing several separate scans because the session was ended after each page.

What changes when you choose a different app?
The camera capture itself is similar, but the document’s home changes. Notes treats the scan as a PDF attachment in a selected note. That makes related context easy to find, but you must use Notes’ copy or share command if someone needs a normal file in Files. Files asks for the destination after the scan and is therefore the clearest choice when a folder, cloud location, or upload workflow matters.
Preview is the most PDF-centered option of the three. Its documented flow combines the captured pages into one PDF, and its thumbnails expose crop, rotate, and scan-color controls. If you already know the document needs those corrections, saving from Preview can reduce the number of app switches. The visible save locations still depend on what is configured on the iPhone.
Cost, equipment, and practical limits
This task does not require a standalone scanner, phone stand, replacement part, or scanning consumable. Apple’s documented workflows use the iPhone camera and built-in apps. The practical requirements are a charged phone, enough available storage for the captured pages and resulting PDF, and a surface where pages can lie flat. No extra purchase is necessary simply to combine multiple pages into one PDF.

Because the process is camera-based, handling the pages and lighting the surface has more effect on quality than buying an accessory. A stable grip, visible edges, and controlled reflections help automatic detection; manual capture and corner adjustment provide a fallback when conditions are imperfect.
Final review before you send the file
- Confirm that every paper page appears as a page in the single PDF.
- Check that front and back sides are in the intended reading order.
- Rotate any upside-down page and crop away background without cutting off text, signatures, or form fields.
- Look at small print and dark areas at full size; a scan that looks acceptable in a thumbnail may still need a different color adjustment in Preview.
- Verify the destination and filename before attaching the PDF to an email, message, or upload form.
If the result is wrong, correct the original scan where it lives instead of collecting loose page images from multiple apps. Notes can copy or share the corrected PDF, Files can organize the saved file, and Preview can save the edited combined document.
