How to Scan for Unwanted Trackers on Android and Manage Unknown-Tracker Alerts

Use Android’s built-in Unknown tracker alerts. On Android 6 and later, you can run an on-demand scan for compatible tags, headphones, and Apple AirTags that are nearby and separated from their owners. Android can also issue an automatic alert when its system determines that an unfamiliar tracker has been moving with you.

Open Settings and search for Unknown tracker alerts. On Android 12 and later, the documented path is Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now. A manual scan takes about 10 seconds. If an alert appears, use its map, play the tracker’s sound, document what you find, and consider your safety before disabling anything.

What Android can and cannot detect

Android’s feature is designed for compatible Bluetooth trackers that are near your phone but separated from their owner. Google’s current Android Help documentation lists Find Hub network-compatible tags, headphones and Apple AirTags as supported categories. The feature is available on Android 6 and later, although menu names and locations vary by Android release and phone manufacturer. See the official instructions at Google Android Help.

A manual scan answers “what compatible tracker appears to be nearby right now?” It is a point-in-time check. A result could be a tag someone misplaced or temporarily left behind; it does not prove that the device traveled with you. An automatic unknown-tracker alert is a different judgment. Android considers location information, detection times, the tracker’s device ID and physical movement over time before deciding that a tracker may be moving with you.

These checks are not a universal detector for every tracking technology. A clean scan does not establish that no tracker is present, and a tracker that remains with its owner may not appear as an unknown device.

Check your Android version and prerequisites

Supported Android releases

  • Android 6 and later: unknown-tracker alerts are supported where the device and tracker category are compatible.
  • Android 12 (S) and later: use Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts.
  • Android 11 (R) and earlier: Google’s guide places the feature under Settings > Google > Personal & device safety > Unknown tracker alerts. Manufacturers may use different wording.

Location and Bluetooth behavior

Automatic alerts require Location to be enabled. On Android 11 and later, a manual scan does not require Location to be on. On Android 10 and lower, a manual scan uses both Location and Bluetooth. Bluetooth must be available for the phone to communicate with nearby compatible trackers.

Turning off Bluetooth or Location on your phone, or enabling Airplane Mode, does not stop a tracker from reporting its own location. Those settings change what your phone does; they do not disable the tag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a manual scan for nearby trackers

Android 12 and later

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Safety & emergency.
  3. Tap Unknown tracker alerts.
  4. Tap Scan now.
  5. Keep the phone with you while the scan runs. Google says the check takes about 10 seconds.

Android 11 and earlier

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Google.
  3. Choose Personal & device safety.
  4. Open Unknown tracker alerts, then start the scan.

If you cannot see those labels, use the Settings search box for “tracker” or “unknown tracker.” The exact menu can differ by manufacturer and software build.

Interpret the result correctly

A manual result means a compatible tracker was detected nearby and appears separated from its owner’s device at that moment. It does not identify the owner, establish intent or show that the tracker followed you. If nothing appears, the tracker could be out of range, still be with its owner, incompatible with the feature, or not transmitting at the time of the scan.

Run another scan after moving to a different room, outside area or another point along your route. Multiple scans can improve the accuracy of nearby detection, but they still represent snapshots rather than proof of a tracker’s history.

Manual scan versus automatic alert

Question Manual scan Automatic alert
What it measures Compatible trackers nearby and separated from their owners at scan time Whether Android’s system has enough evidence that an unfamiliar tracker is moving with you
How you start it Settings > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now Runs in the background when alerts are enabled
Timing About 10 seconds for one check May be delayed while Android observes movement and other factors
Location requirement Not required on Android 11 and later; required with Bluetooth on Android 10 and lower Location must be enabled
Meaning of a result Nearby now; not proof that the tracker traveled with you A system warning that the tracker may be traveling with you

Android currently sends only one automatic alert per tracker each day. A later alert can arrive if the same tracker is still detected with you the next day.

What to do when an unknown-tracker alert arrives

1. Open the notification and study the map

Tap the alert to see a map of where Android detected the tracker traveling with you. The map shows detection points associated with your phone; it does not reveal where the tracker’s owner checked its location.

2. Try to make the tracker play a sound

Tap Play sound and listen while checking your surroundings. Google says the owner is not notified when you play the sound. If there is no sound, move around and try again. The tracker may be outside Bluetooth range, no longer be with you, or have changed its rotating device ID.

3. Use Find nearby when it is offered

For Find Hub network-compatible trackers, open Next steps > Find nearby. The phone can establish a Bluetooth connection and provide directional guidance as you approach the device. This option is not shown for every tracker category.

4. Search methodically and safely

Check the belongings and areas that traveled with you: bags, coat pockets, luggage, a vehicle and other places where a small tag could be hidden. Retrace the route shown on the map only if doing so is safe. Avoid confronting a person you suspect may own the tracker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Preserve what you see

Before changing or disabling the device, save screenshots of the notification, map and any identifying screen. Record the date, time, locations and circumstances. Documentation can help a trusted person or law-enforcement officer understand what happened.

If you find the physical tracker

Identify the device

Use the alert’s Next steps instructions because the process depends on the manufacturer. For an Apple AirTag, bring the tag near the back of your Android phone to display available information. Other supported trackers provide on-screen identification steps. Depending on the device, Android may show a serial number, owner information, a device identifier or a concealed owner email after identification.

Decide whether to disable it

Disabling stops future location updates from that tracker, but the owner may still see the last location recorded while it was active. Google warns that disabling some devices can factory-reset them and erase information that law enforcement might otherwise use. If you are not in immediate danger, preserve screenshots and identifying details before taking that step, and consider contacting local law enforcement for advice.

If you feel threatened, prioritize distance and personal safety: go to a safe public place, contact a trusted person or contact law enforcement. If the tracker cannot be located and you remain unsafe, use the same approach rather than searching alone. Google’s help page also lists the Safety Net Project in the United States, Refuge UK in the United Kingdom and WESNET Safety Net Australia as additional support resources; availability depends on your location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use manufacturer-specific shutdown instructions

There is no universal button sequence for every tag. Follow the instructions displayed by Android or supplied by the tracker manufacturer. Do not assume that removing your phone’s connectivity will shut down the tag.

For certain Find Hub-compatible trackers, Android may offer a temporary pause of location updates from the phone for up to 24 hours. This is a limited phone-side pause for that category, not a permanent shutdown of the physical tracker.

Manage unknown-tracker alert settings and history

View previous alerts

On Android 12 and later, go to Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts, then open the tracker-alerts history button. On Android 11 and lower, use the corresponding alert controls under Settings > Google > Personal & device safety.

Google says alert history is deleted after 48 hours. Turning off Unknown tracker alerts also clears previous alerts and tracker information, and that deleted information cannot be recovered. Save anything you may need before disabling the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the privacy model

For alert decisions, Android uses location information, detection timestamps and the tracker device ID. Google says this information is temporarily processed and stored in encrypted form on the phone, does not leave the device and is not shared with Google or other users. The relevant alert data is used to determine whether a tracker may be following you and to display detections on a map.

Why an alert or scan may not behave as expected

Symptom Likely explanation What to try
No tracker appears in a manual scan The tag is with its owner, out of range, incompatible or not currently transmitting Move to another area and repeat the scan; a clean result is not proof that no tracker exists
The automatic alert arrived later than expected Android uses several factors and looks for movement with the tracker over time Keep Location enabled and respond when the alert appears; run a manual scan if you are concerned immediately
You receive only one alert The current system sends one alert per tracker per day Check again later; another alert may arrive the next day if the tracker remains with you
Play sound does nothing The tag is out of Bluetooth range, no longer nearby or using a changed random ID Move around, try again and use the map to retrace your route
The same physical tag appears as a new device Tracker IDs rotate regularly and may change less often, such as once per day, when the tag is away from its owner Compare location, timing and physical evidence rather than relying on the displayed ID alone
Turning on Airplane Mode does not solve the concern Phone connectivity settings do not disable the tracker itself Use the tracker’s own manufacturer instructions and consider evidence and safety first

Why timing and repeated checks matter

A manual scan and an automatic alert answer different questions, so neither should be treated as a faster or slower version of the other. Scan now looks for a compatible device that is close enough to be detected and separated from its owner at that instant. The background system is looking for a pattern: an unfamiliar tracker repeatedly being detected with you as you move. That pattern can take time to establish, which explains why an alert may not appear immediately after you first notice a device.

Android’s one-alert-per-tracker-per-day limit also affects what you see. Not receiving another notification the same day does not prove that the tracker disappeared. If it remains with you, the system may issue another alert on a later day. Continue to use manual scans and the original map when you need an immediate check.

Tracker identifiers are designed to rotate. When a tag is away from its owner, an identifier may change less often, sometimes about once a day. Consequently, a later scan can list what appears to be a new device even when the physical tag is the same. Match the map, time, movement and any physical evidence instead of treating a displayed identifier as a permanent label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a “no trackers found” result really means

A clean result is useful information, but it has a narrow meaning: no compatible, detectable tracker separated from its owner was found during that scan. The device might be just outside Bluetooth range, shielded by its surroundings, with its owner, temporarily inactive or outside the categories Android supports. Scan again from another location and at another time if your concern continues. If you receive an alert later, rely on that alert’s map and response tools rather than assuming the earlier scan ruled out every possibility.

Do you need an app, subscription or special scanner?

No purchase is required for the documented workflow. Unknown tracker alerts and the manual scan are built into compatible Android phones. The potential tracker is the object being investigated, not a product you need to buy. Third-party apps or hardware may use different detection methods, but Google’s instructions do not establish that any particular paid tool detects more trackers or provides better evidence. Start with the built-in settings, then follow the manufacturer-specific instructions shown for the device you find.

Make a safety-first decision

There are two separate decisions after an alert: where to look and whether to alter the device. Search only when you can do so safely, preferably with another person or in a public place. If you find the tag and are not in immediate danger, preserve the alert, map, serial number and other identification details before disabling it. If you are in danger, leave first and contact a trusted person or law enforcement; preserving the device is secondary to getting somewhere safe. Disabling may stop new updates but can also remove information that could help an investigation, and the owner may still see the last recorded location.

Keep Location enabled when you want automatic protection. If privacy or safety circumstances require changing settings, save the short-lived alert history first. Remember that the history disappears after 48 hours and is also erased when Unknown tracker alerts are turned off.

A practical response checklist

  • Confirm that your phone runs Android 6 or later and locate Unknown tracker alerts in Settings.
  • Run Scan now when you need a nearby, point-in-time check.
  • Keep Location enabled if you want automatic alerts.
  • When alerted, open the map, try Play sound and use Find nearby when available.
  • Search bags, clothing, vehicles and other belongings only when it is safe.
  • Screenshot the alert, map and identification details before disabling a device.
  • Seek a safe public place and contact a trusted person or law enforcement if you feel threatened.
  • Do not rely on disabling Bluetooth, Location or Airplane Mode to stop a tracker.
  • Remember that alert history expires after 48 hours and is also cleared when alerts are turned off.

The limits of Android’s tracker protection

Android’s built-in tools are useful for compatible trackers that communicate within the conditions the system can observe. They do not establish that every kind of tracker will be found, and they cannot determine intent from a scan alone. A manual result indicates proximity; an automatic alert is a warning based on movement and other signals. Treat either result as information to investigate, not as a complete forensic conclusion.

For the exact supported categories, menu paths and current behavior, consult Google Android Help: Find unknown trackers. The page is the authoritative place to check if your Android release or tracker type is handled differently after a software update.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I scan for a tracker near me on Android?

Open Settings, search for Unknown tracker alerts, and choose Scan now. On Android 12 and later, use Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now. The check takes about 10 seconds.

Can Android detect every hidden tracker?

No. The feature covers compatible tracker categories, including supported Find Hub tags, headphones and Apple AirTags. A clean scan does not rule out an incompatible device, a tracker outside range or one still with its owner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did I not get an alert sooner?

Automatic alerts use several signals and look for movement with the tracker over time. Android may therefore delay the notification while it evaluates whether an unfamiliar device is traveling with you. A manual scan can provide an immediate point-in-time check.

Why did I receive only one alert?

Android currently sends one automatic alert per tracker each day. If the tracker remains with you, another alert may arrive the next day.

Why did my manual scan find nothing?

The tracker may be with its owner, outside Bluetooth range, incompatible, temporarily not transmitting or represented by a changed identifier. Move to another area and repeat the scan; a negative result is not proof that no tracker exists.

Does turning off Bluetooth, Location or Airplane Mode stop the tracker?

No. Those phone settings do not disable the physical tracker or prevent its owner from seeing its last location. Follow the manufacturer’s shutdown instructions instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the tracker owner know if I play a sound?

Google says the owner is not notified when you use Play sound from the alert. If no sound plays, move around and try again because the tag may be out of range, gone or using a changed identifier.

How long does Android keep tracker-alert history?

Google says alert history is deleted after 48 hours. Turning off Unknown tracker alerts also clears previous alerts and tracker information, so save screenshots and identifying details first.

Do I need to buy a special scanner or subscription?

No. The documented scan and alerts are built into compatible Android phones. Google does not recommend a particular paid product for this procedure.

The Bottom Line

Use Unknown tracker alerts for both a quick manual scan and background warnings. A scan shows what is nearby now; an alert reflects movement over time. If warned, review the map, try Play sound or Find nearby, save evidence, and put personal safety ahead of disabling or recovering the device.
