First identify the exact RPG Maker version and asset category—picture, face, character sheet, title image, battle graphic, or tileset—because each can have different layout rules. Keep the untouched capture as your master, crop and clean a copy, resize it to the target canvas, export the format that version requires, and test the result in the project.
RPG Maker MZ’s official help states that image assets must be PNG. For a usual MZ map-character sheet, the documented cell is 48 × 48 pixels, arranged as four directions by three walking patterns. That convention does not establish a universal size for every MZ image, and it should not be transferred automatically to MV or to another asset category.

Start with the engine, asset type, and final pixel target
Do not make a permanent crop before you know what the art will become. Open the official help for the version you are actually using and identify the standard for that asset category. MZ and MV have separate documentation, and a character-sheet rule is not a rule for portraits, pictures, title graphics, battle images, or tilesets.

Before scanning, record four decisions:
- Engine: RPG Maker MZ, MV, or another release.
- Asset category: for example, a map character, face image, event picture, title image, or tileset.
- Display role: whether the art fills a fixed canvas, appears at an arbitrary screen position, or must align to a grid.
- Delivery size: the pixel width and height required by the target project, including any sheet rows, columns, margins, or animation frames.
If the manual does not prescribe a dimension for your category, choose the canvas from the way the image will be displayed rather than borrowing a number from a different asset. Save the intended width and height in your notes so that every later export can be checked against it.

Use MZ’s character convention only where it belongs
MZ’s help describes a usual character cell of 48 × 48 pixels, with four directions and three patterns. A sheet containing one such grid would therefore occupy 3 × 48 pixels horizontally and 4 × 48 pixels vertically, or 144 × 192 pixels, before any version-specific sheet conventions are applied. Treat that as arithmetic for the documented layout, not as a universal sprite size. Larger or differently arranged character art can be supported when the relevant MZ rules are followed.
| Destination | What must be decided before cropping | Why a universal crop is unsafe |
|---|---|---|
| Map character sheet | Cell size, direction rows, walking-pattern columns, and the sheet convention for your engine | The 48 × 48 MZ cell applies to the usual character category, not to every image |
| Face or portrait | Portrait box, expression variants, and any required sheet arrangement | Portrait dimensions and arrangement are separate from character cells |
| Picture or illustration | Screen placement, aspect ratio, and whether the image may be larger than the game window | Pictures are not constrained by the character-grid rule |
| Title, battle, or tileset art | The category’s documented canvas, tiling or layering behavior, and transparency requirements | Each category has its own loading and layout assumptions |
Prepare the physical zine without damaging it
A printed zine may be small, glossy, bound, folded, or printed on paper that will not tolerate pressure. The best capture method is the one that records the art evenly without forcing the page into a flat position.
Flatbed scanning
A flatbed can give consistent alignment and lighting when the page fits on the bed and can lie there safely. Place the page square to the scanner guides, keep the lid closed without pressing down, and check the first preview for clipped edges, shadows, or a gutter that rises away from the glass. A flatbed is an optional tool, not a requirement for someone who already has a suitable digital original.

Do not flatten a bound or fragile page by force. The Library of Congress preservation guidance explicitly warns: “Don’t place glass or Plexiglas® on top of artwork, documents, manuscripts, prints, photographs, with or without mounts, or other Library materials to flatten for image capture.” If the page cannot rest safely on a scanner, use a non-contact camera setup or scan only a removable copy. Support the zine so its spine is not strained, keep the camera parallel to the page, and use even illumination from both sides to reduce glare.
Keep the page orientation and borders intentional
Do not trim away a border merely because it looks like empty paper. A border may be part of the composition, provide useful bleed for later positioning, or show how the artist intended the edge to look. Mark the intended crop in your notes or save a full-page master so you can revisit the decision without rescanning.

Choose color mode and resolution in context
There is no single correct pixels-per-inch setting for every zine illustration. The useful setting depends on the physical size of the art, the smallest detail that must survive, the final game canvas, and whether you want a reusable preservation file.
Separate archival benchmarks from game requirements
The Smithsonian Institution Archives gives a preservation benchmark of at least 600 ppi and 6,000 pixels along the long axis for its still-image holdings, with uncompressed TIFF used for preservation files. That specification is designed for long-term reuse and is not a mandatory setting for a small RPG asset.
National Archives and Records Administration guidance for textual records uses ranges of 300–400 ppi, varying with color or grayscale mode and the content being scanned. FADGI guidance also changes with the printed-material category, dimensions, and intended use. Those figures describe records and digitization practice; they do not establish one required resolution for every illustration in a zine.
Relate ppi to the pixels you need
Use the physical size of the crop to estimate the capture resolution: pixel width = inches of the crop × capture ppi. For example, a 4-inch-wide drawing captured at 600 ppi produces about 2,400 pixels across before trimming. You can then reduce that copy to the game’s target width. Capturing too few pixels cannot be repaired by enlarging later; capturing more gives you room to straighten, crop, and make alternate derivatives, at the cost of larger files and longer processing.
Choose color or grayscale deliberately
- Color: use it when ink color, paper tint, washes, or colored registration are part of the illustration.
- Grayscale: use it only when color carries no information and a smaller, simpler source is genuinely useful.
- Black-and-white thresholding: reserve it for line art that can tolerate the loss of gray shading and paper texture; keep a color or grayscale master first.
Printed halftone dots, paper fibers, and glossy highlights can create moiré or uneven fields. Preview at 100% and at the eventual in-game size. If a scanner offers a descreen option, compare a test region rather than applying it blindly; it can reduce dot patterns but may soften fine lines.

Capture and preserve an untouched master
- Clean the glass and page gently. Remove dust with the scanner’s recommended method. Do not scrape ink or rub a fragile surface.
- Set the capture mode. Select color or grayscale based on the illustration, disable automatic cropping if it could cut off a border, and choose a resolution appropriate to the final pixels and any preservation need.
- Preview the whole page. Check that corners, gutter details, and pale marks are visible and that no part of the art is clipped.
- Capture the full page or a generous area. Leave enough margin to correct a slight rotation and to choose the final crop later.
- Save immediately as the source. For a preservation-oriented master, an uncompressed TIFF follows the Smithsonian example. If your capture device offers another lossless option, keep the original settings documented rather than repeatedly resaving a compressed file.
- Make a working copy. Add a suffix such as
_editor place the copy in a derivatives folder. Never overwrite the untouched master during rotation, color correction, background removal, or resizing.
Use stable names and notes
A practical filename records the zine, page, artwork, capture date, and version, such as zine03_p12_dragon_master.tif and zine03_p12_dragon_mz_picture_v01.png. Keep a small text record of capture resolution, color mode, physical page size, intended RPG Maker version, asset category, and the final pixel dimensions. These notes prevent a later export from being mistaken for the source.

Crop and correct a duplicate
Straighten before making the final crop
Open the working copy, rotate it until page edges or known straight lines are level, and correct perspective only when the capture angle made opposite edges visibly different in scale. Crop after straightening so the crop box follows the artwork rather than the skewed page. Keep a little extra area until you have checked the art in context.
Decide what belongs inside the crop
Include an artistically important border, shadow, caption, or bleed when the destination can display it. Exclude unrelated page text, neighboring panels, and gutter distortion. For an illustration intended to fill a picture canvas, set the crop ratio to the destination canvas before trimming; for a character sheet, isolate the character first and build the sheet around the required cells.
Correct tone and color without erasing the drawing
Use levels or curves to neutralize a gray paper cast and recover dark ink, but inspect the lightest lines at 100%. Aggressive contrast can remove pencil texture, turn colored ink into flat black, or clip highlights. If the paper itself is yellowed and that history matters, preserve it in the master and make a cleaner game derivative.
Create transparency only when the asset needs it
If the art should float over a map or battle background, remove the paper background on the duplicate. A simple selection by color may leave a pale halo around antialiased lines; refine the mask, inspect the edge against both a light and a dark temporary background, and clean isolated paper-colored specks. Do not remove a paper wash that is part of the illustration. Keep the original opaque capture so a failed cutout can be rebuilt.

Resize with the visual style in mind
Downscaling a detailed illustration usually benefits from a high-quality reduction filter, followed by an inspection at 100% and at game scale. Hard-edged pixel art may require nearest-neighbor scaling to preserve intentional blocks. A scanned zine drawing is not automatically pixel art, so compare the result rather than assuming one resampling method fits every source. Avoid repeated resize-and-save cycles; resize once from the clean working copy for each intended derivative.
Build the engine-specific canvas
Character sheets
For a usual MZ character sheet, create the documented 48 × 48-pixel cells, place the four directions in the required rows, and put the three walking patterns in the required columns. Align every frame to identical cell boundaries; a one-pixel shift will make a sprite appear to jump while walking. If the character is taller or wider than the usual cell, confirm the supported sheet convention in the MZ help before exporting rather than squeezing the art into a 48-pixel box.
Pictures, portraits, and other images
For a picture or portrait, size the art to the actual display canvas or to a deliberate maximum that preserves detail. Do not pad a picture with character-sheet rows, and do not assume a portrait can be loaded as a map character. For tilesets or other structured assets, use the category’s documented grid and transparency rules. When the documentation does not state a universal pixel size, your project design—not a dimension borrowed from another category—determines the canvas.
Keep the crop, canvas, and transparency separate
A crop answers “which part of the page is the art?” A canvas answers “where will that art sit in the engine?” They are not always the same. You may crop tightly around a character, then place it on a larger transparent cell so its feet align consistently with other actors. Conversely, a full-page illustration may need a tight crop to avoid wasting pixels around a picture that is shown once.
Export a game-ready PNG and import it
- Set the final dimensions. Verify width, height, sheet columns, rows, and any required padding against the help for your exact engine and category.
- Convert to the required color mode. Retain an alpha channel when transparency is needed; flatten only when the destination should show the paper or a solid background.
- Export PNG. RPG Maker MZ’s official asset standard says, “All images must be in the PNG format.” Use PNG for the MZ derivative rather than relying on a file extension change.
- Reopen the exported file. Check that the dimensions did not change, transparency is still present, colors are acceptable, and no export profile or matte color created a fringe.
- Place it in the matching project workflow. Use the editor’s asset import process or the project folder for the category, such as the folder used for characters or pictures. Keep the master and editable copy outside the game directory so an editor cleanup cannot destroy them.
- Test in the actual project. View the image at the intended map zoom, event position, menu size, or battle scene. Confirm that animation frames advance correctly and that transparent edges do not show a box.
Compare capture approaches before you commit
| Approach | Best fit | Check before use | Primary trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flatbed scan | Loose pages that fit safely on the bed | Bed size, gutter shadows, glare, and whether the lid can close without pressure | Consistent lighting and alignment, but unsuitable when the page must be forced flat |
| Non-contact camera capture | Bound, fragile, oversized, or dimensional pages | Parallel camera position, even lighting, focus across the page, and perspective correction | Protects the object, but requires more setup and geometric correction |
| Existing digital original | Art that already exists as a clean, high-resolution file | Native dimensions, color mode, licensing, and whether transparency is intact | Fastest route, but it may not include the printed texture or exact zine crop |
Choose based on whether the page can be captured without force, whether the bed accommodates it, whether color and print texture matter, how many pixels the final crop needs, and whether the destination is a single picture or a structured sheet.

Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often
The result is blurry after resizing
Check the master dimensions and the crop size before changing settings. If the source crop has fewer pixels than the target, enlargement cannot restore missing detail. Recapture at a higher practical resolution or reduce the target canvas. Also check that the editor did not apply a low-quality preview filter.
A white or colored halo surrounds transparent art
The mask probably retained paper pixels from antialiasing. Display the cutout over both light and dark backgrounds, contract or feather the mask minimally, and clean edge pixels on the duplicate. Export with a real alpha channel instead of painting the paper color to match one background.
Lines look jagged or unexpectedly soft
Determine whether the source is continuous-tone illustration or intentionally pixelated art. Use a quality reduction filter for the former and nearest-neighbor for the latter, then inspect at the game’s display scale. Avoid several successive resizes.
The sprite appears to jump or face the wrong way
Measure the sheet against the documented row and column order. Every frame must share the same cell dimensions and baseline. A correct-looking drawing in the wrong row can still produce an incorrect direction in-game.
The scanner cuts off the page or creates a dark gutter
Preview the entire page, disable automatic edge cropping, and capture a larger area. If the bound gutter cannot lie flat without pressure, change to a non-contact setup instead of pressing the book down.
The engine rejects or ignores the file
Confirm the extension and actual encoding, not just the filename. For MZ image assets, export a valid PNG, verify the dimensions, and place it in the category’s expected project workflow. Then restart or refresh the editor if the asset list has not updated.
Preserve a source that can outlive this project
Keep three layers of files: the untouched capture, an editable working file, and one or more game-ready derivatives. The master should retain the page context and maximum useful detail; the derivative can be tightly cropped, color-corrected, transparent, resized, and PNG-encoded for MZ. Back up the master separately from the project directory.
The archival figures from the Smithsonian, NARA, and FADGI are useful reminders that preservation and game delivery solve different problems. A preservation capture may be large and uncompressed so it can support future crops, while the game file is optimized for a particular canvas and loading workflow. Label each file with its role so nobody mistakes a low-resolution derivative for the source.
