Yes—you can scan a flash drive without opening its files. Connect it while Windows Security real-time protection is active, do not respond to any AutoPlay or file prompts, then open File Explorer, right-click the removable drive and choose Scan or Scan with your installed security software. Wait for the complete result before opening anything on the drive.
For a USB stick that is unfamiliar, found, or was used in a public computer, treat every Office document, PDF and executable as potentially dangerous even if its filename looks ordinary. Keep security intelligence current, disable AutoRun and AutoPlay, and use an offline scan made on a clean computer if the Windows installation itself may be compromised.

Why the order matters
Removable media is a convenient way to move documents, but it also crosses trust boundaries between computers. Microsoft notes that some malware spreads by copying itself to USB flash drives and other removable drives. A drive can therefore be risky even when you did not download anything yourself.
The safe sequence is to let the security product inspect the device before you browse its folders. Opening a document, running a program, or accepting a prompt can give malicious content an opportunity to execute before your manual scan has finished. Scanning the drive first does not make every file trustworthy, but it removes the most avoidable exposure.

The safe Windows 10 or 11 procedure
1. Treat the drive as untrusted
If the stick is found, came from another person, or was connected to a public or shared computer, assume it is suspect. Do not double-click the drive in File Explorer, open a shortcut on it, or enable a prompt asking what to do with the media. If Windows displays an AutoPlay notification, close it without choosing an action.
Do not rely on an extension or icon as proof of safety. Microsoft specifically advises caution with unfamiliar Office files, PDFs and executable files on removable media. A document that appears to be a report, invoice or image may still contain a malicious payload, and an executable can run as soon as it is launched.
2. Make sure protection is active before connecting
Confirm that Windows Security real-time protection is enabled before you insert the drive. Real-time protection is the on-access layer: it can inspect activity as files are read or launched, while the manual scan below checks the drive on demand.
Also make sure security intelligence (the malware definitions used by Microsoft Defender) is current. Windows Update delivers those updates. If the computer has been offline, allow it to update before scanning whenever possible; a scan made with stale intelligence may not recognize newer threats.
3. Insert the USB without opening it
Connect the drive with the security product running. Do not open its contents from the notification, desktop shortcut or a recently used-files list. If the computer immediately reports a threat, leave the drive closed and follow the quarantine or removal action offered by the security product.

4. Scan the whole removable drive
- Open File Explorer.
- Locate the USB drive under This PC or the removable-storage section. Identify it by its drive letter and label rather than opening its folders.
- Right-click the removable drive.
- Select Scan or Scan with [your security software]. Microsoft Support describes this as the direct way to force a scan of a removable drive.
- Wait until the security product reports that the scan has finished. Do not open files while the scan is running.
A whole-drive scan is the correct first pass because it examines the device rather than only the file you happen to notice. Let the product complete its action even if the drive contains only a few visible files; hidden items and files in other folders can still matter.
5. Scan an individual file or folder when necessary
After the drive-level scan is clear, you can request a second check on a particular item. Right-click the file or folder, choose Show more options, and select Scan with Microsoft Defender. This is useful when you are about to handle a high-risk item or when another security product has not integrated a per-item command into the first context menu.
An individual-item scan complements rather than replaces the whole-drive scan. It answers “is this item currently detected?”; it does not establish that other folders, hidden files or startup-related content on the USB are clean.
Keep removable media covered after the first scan
Enable removable-drive scanning during a full scan
Microsoft security settings include an option to scan removable drives when a full scan runs. Turn that option on so a later full scan does not skip USB storage. This is a separate control from the immediate right-click scan, so check it even if the first manual scan completed successfully.
Leave real-time protection and updates enabled
Real-time protection should remain on for routine work, and security intelligence should continue to update through Windows Update. Turning protection off to make a drive open more easily removes the layer that can block a file when it is accessed. If a security product asks for a restart or an update before it can remediate a detection, complete that action before using the USB again.

Use a standard account and patched software
Microsoft recommends using a non-administrator account for routine work. Limiting the account’s privileges reduces what a malicious program can change if something is missed. Keep Windows and installed applications patched as well; a scan is one control, not a substitute for fixing known software weaknesses.

Do not open the flagged item
Use the security product’s quarantine or removal action and leave the detected file closed. Do not restore it merely to see what it contains, and do not copy it to another computer for examination unless your organization’s incident-response process specifically requires that handling.
Consider the host computer, not just the USB
If malware was detected, or if the computer behaved strangely before the scan, treat the host as potentially affected. Disconnect it from sensitive networks while you follow your organization’s security or incident-response policy. A normal in-Windows scan may not be enough when malware can interfere with the operating system or security tools; use an offline or incident-response scan in that situation.
Do not reuse the drive casually
Keep the USB disconnected until remediation is complete. If you need files from it, let your security process determine whether recovery is appropriate. Do not move unscanned copies to another machine, email them, or place them in shared storage, because that can spread the same threat to additional systems.
Reduce automatic-execution risk
Disable AutoRun and AutoPlay
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends disabling AutoRun and AutoPlay for all removable-media devices. With those features disabled, connecting a drive is less likely to trigger an automatic action before you choose to scan it. You still need to avoid manually opening files; disabling automatic execution does not make the contents trustworthy.

Scan the entire device periodically
CISA also recommends scanning the entire removable device periodically. A full-device check is valuable when a USB has moved between several computers or has been stored for a long time. Keep the schedule appropriate to your organization’s policy and the sensitivity of the data; no specific interval is established in the guidance.
When the computer itself may be infected: Microsoft Defender Offline
Microsoft Defender Offline is a bootable scan for cases in which malware may be active in Windows. Because the scan runs outside the normal operating system, it can examine threats that interfere with an in-Windows scan.
Create the rescue media on a clean PC
Microsoft says to create Defender Offline media on a computer that is not infected. Malware on the host could interfere with creation or compromise the rescue process. If an organization provides a managed recovery procedure, follow that procedure instead of improvising media on the suspected machine.
Protect any data on the media you use
If you use a USB drive to create the offline media, the process reformats that drive and erases its existing data. Use a blank drive or back up its contents first. Do not use the suspect USB as the rescue-media device unless you have already preserved the data and accept that the creation process will erase it; normally, use a separate blank drive.

Use offline scanning for the right problem
An offline scan is a recovery and containment measure, not the normal first step for every new flash drive. For an ordinary USB on a healthy, protected PC, the File Explorer right-click scan is the appropriate starting point. Escalate to offline scanning when the host may already be infected, when security tools are being disabled, or when your organization’s response plan calls for a bootable check.

Personal Windows controls versus managed business controls
Home users generally work through Windows Security and the File Explorer context menu. Organizations using Microsoft Defender for Endpoint can apply centrally managed removable-storage policies. In managed environments, Defender for Endpoint supports real-time removable-storage scanning and an attack-surface-reduction rule that can block untrusted and unsigned processes from USB devices.
Those endpoint policies are controlled by administrators and may be stricter than the settings visible to a standard user. If a work computer blocks a USB or reports a policy violation, do not bypass the control; contact the administrator and provide the drive’s source and the scan result.
Choosing the right scan for the situation
| Scan or control | Coverage | When it runs | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole-drive manual scan | The removable drive and its contents | When you start it from File Explorer | First check before opening an unfamiliar or newly connected USB |
| Single-file or folder scan | The selected item only | When you choose Show more options and Scan with Microsoft Defender | A second check for a particular document, folder or executable |
| Real-time protection | Files and activity as they are accessed | Continuously while protection is enabled | Ongoing protection during normal use; it does not replace a deliberate whole-drive scan |
| Full scan with removable-drive option enabled | System areas plus removable drives covered by the setting | When a full scan runs | Routine broad checks that include USB storage |
| Microsoft Defender Offline | The computer’s environment from a bootable scan | Before normal Windows starts | When the host may already be infected or an in-Windows scan cannot be trusted |
| Defender for Endpoint removable-storage policy | Removable-storage access and process behavior under organizational policy | Continuously on managed endpoints | Central control, including blocking untrusted and unsigned USB processes |
Common situations and the safest response
You found a USB stick
Do not plug it into a personal or work computer simply to identify the owner. If you must examine it under an authorized process, use a protected system, keep AutoRun and AutoPlay disabled, scan the whole device first, and avoid opening Office, PDF or executable files until the result is clear. Follow your organization’s lost-media procedure for returning or preserving it.

Assume it crossed an untrusted boundary. Scan before browsing, keep real-time protection on, and treat every executable and active document as suspect. A clean scan reduces risk but does not prove that a file is appropriate to run; use only the files you actually need and follow your normal patching and account-privilege controls.
Windows asks what to do with the drive
Close the AutoPlay prompt. Open File Explorer manually, right-click the drive and start the security scan. Do not choose an option that opens the contents or launches an application before the scan completes.
The scan reports a threat and then disappears
Do not assume the device is clean. Record the detection, leave the flagged file unopened, and follow the product’s quarantine or removal workflow. If the warning returns, protection is disabled, or the computer shows other signs of compromise, disconnect it from sensitive networks and escalate to an offline or incident-response scan.
Quick Recap
A concise checklist
- Keep the drive closed and reject AutoPlay prompts.
- Verify real-time protection is on and security intelligence is current.
- Right-click the removable drive in File Explorer and run Scan or Scan with your security software.
- Wait for the complete result before opening any file.
- Use Show more options and Scan with Microsoft Defender for an additional item-level check.
- Enable removable-drive scanning during full scans.
- Disable AutoRun and AutoPlay for removable media.
- Use a non-administrator account and keep Windows and applications patched.
- If the host may be infected, create Microsoft Defender Offline media on a clean PC; remember that creating it on a USB reformats and erases that drive.
