How to Scan a Machine Learning Project for Exposed Secrets Before Sharing It

Scan both the files you can see and every Git commit and branch that will be shared, then review each alert and immediately revoke or rotate any credential that may be real. A clean scan reduces risk but cannot prove that every secret has been found: coverage depends on the scanner’s patterns, the credential type, and which files, history, artifacts, and hosting services are in scope.

For a practical review, use a local scanner such as Gitleaks for the project directory, repository, and history; enable GitHub Secret Scanning when the repository type and plan support it; and use the scanning built into the Hugging Face Hub when that is where the project is hosted. Treat hosted alerts and local results as complementary checks, not as interchangeable accuracy rankings.

Start by defining exactly what you will share

Secret scanning is only useful when its scope matches the package another person will receive. Before running a tool, write down every path and copy that could leave your computer. A machine-learning project is rarely just a source-code folder.

Shareable item What to inspect Why it is easy to miss
Working directory Source files, scripts, environment files, notebooks, test fixtures and local configuration Hidden files and ignored files may not appear in a normal file browser
Git repository Current files, all branches, tags, stashes and commit history Deleting a line from the latest commit does not remove earlier copies
Notebooks Code cells, output cells, metadata and embedded connection settings Outputs and metadata can preserve values that are absent from the visible code
Model and dataset artifacts Exported configuration, training manifests, serialized objects, logs and sample data An artifact can contain a credential even when the source tree does not
Archives and exports Zip files, release bundles, notebook downloads and copied directories An old archive can keep a secret after the source was cleaned
Hosted copies Remote repositories, model hubs, issue attachments and shared storage Each service has its own history, permissions and detection coverage

The cited scanner guidance covers repositories, ordinary files, Git history and the named hosting platforms. It does not establish complete coverage for every model format, dataset, archive type or sharing channel. If an artifact is part of the handoff, inspect that artifact separately rather than assuming a source-code scan examined its contents.

A layered scan workflow

Use the following order so that you do not mistake a clean working tree for a clean project.

  1. Make a sharing inventory. List the exact directory, repository, branches, notebooks, artifacts, configuration files and archives that will be uploaded or sent. Include copies generated by build or export steps.
  2. Scan local files. Run a scanner against the project directory and individual files when needed. Gitleaks documents scans of repositories, directories and files, so it can be used before anything is uploaded.
  3. Scan Git history. Include all commits and branches that another person could fetch. A secret removed from the current tree can remain in an older commit, tag or branch.
  4. Check the hosting service. On GitHub, use Secret Scanning when the repository type and current plan make it available. On the Hugging Face Hub, understand what its push-time scanning reports and how its token invalidation process works.
  5. Review every finding safely. Classify alerts as confirmed, probably sensitive, or likely false positive without printing or pasting the full value.
  6. Invalidate confirmed credentials. Revoke or rotate a real credential immediately, then decide whether the shared copy or history also needs cleanup.
  7. Rescan the final handoff. Scan the exact directory or archive that will leave your machine, not only the working copy you edited.

Use Gitleaks for local files and Git history

Gitleaks documentation describes local operation against Git repositories, directories and files, history scanning, CI use and pre-commit integration. That makes it a useful first layer when you need control over what is scanned before a project reaches a host.

Choose the scan target deliberately

  • Directory scan: use it for the complete working tree, including configuration and notebook files that may be outside the main source package.
  • Repository scan: use it when the handoff includes the repository itself and you need findings tied to Git content.
  • History scan: use it to examine older commits and other revisions that can still be fetched or included in an export.
  • File scan: use it for a generated archive, a notebook, a model configuration or another artifact that is being shared separately.

Install and invoke the release documented for your environment, because command names and options are implementation details that can change between versions. Confirm from the tool’s output that the intended path and history were actually examined; a successful process that scanned the wrong directory is not evidence of safety.

Make local results reviewable

Run the scan on a clean copy or a temporary checkout when possible. Keep the report access-controlled, and redact secret values before sending results to a ticket or chat. Record the file path, commit identifier and detector type rather than copying the credential itself. If you need to investigate whether a value is active, use the provider’s own account or audit interface instead of testing the value in a way that could create an unauthorized request.

Add checks before sharing

Gitleaks documents CI and pre-commit integration. A pre-commit check can stop a developer from committing a newly added credential; a CI check can examine changes that bypass a local hook. These controls reduce repeat exposure but do not replace a one-time scan of existing history and exported artifacts.

Understand GitHub Secret Scanning’s scope

GitHub states that Secret Scanning scans all Git history on all branches for hardcoded credentials. That history-wide view is valuable when a secret was committed and later deleted. It also provides alerts and customization options, but availability depends on repository ownership and plan.

Check eligibility before relying on it

GitHub documents different feature eligibility for public repositories, organization-owned private or internal repositories, and user-owned private repositories. Do not assume that every private repository has the same protection. Open the repository’s security settings and verify that Secret Scanning is enabled for this repository and plan before treating the absence of an alert as meaningful.

Interpret alerts as scoped detections

GitHub detection uses pattern matching and validation, and its behavior varies by token type, pattern and push-protection settings. For some paired credentials, both the identifier and secret must occur in the same file and be pushed before the pair is detected. If the two parts are split across files, that particular paired alert may not appear. A clean GitHub result therefore lowers risk within the documented scope; it is not proof that every credential format or artifact was examined.

Use alerts without exposing the value

Open the alert to identify the affected file, commit and credential type, but avoid copying the secret into notes, screenshots or issue comments. Limit alert access to people handling the incident. If the credential belongs to a service account, involve the owner who can revoke it and verify replacement access.

When the project is on the Hugging Face Hub

Hugging Face says it runs TruffleHog on each push and emails notifications for verified detections. This is useful at the moment code or configuration is uploaded, but the service’s verification label needs careful interpretation.

Do not dismiss an unverified result automatically

Hugging Face cautions that verification can fail for technical reasons. An unverified finding may be an invalid value, but it may also be a real token that the verifier could not test. Treat it as a triage item: identify the token type, locate where it appeared and ask the issuing service whether it is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Invalidate leaked Hub tokens

Hugging Face documents invalidation for leaked Hugging Face tokens. Invalidation is the response that stops use of the credential; deleting the line from a repository is not a substitute. After invalidation, replace the token in the legitimate application or deployment path and remove the obsolete value from the copy you intend to distribute.

Review findings without turning investigation into another leak

Every scanner produces findings that require judgment. A match can be a live credential, a revoked value, a test token, a public example, or an ordinary string that resembles a secret.

Classify the match

  • Confirmed exposed credential: the value belongs to a provider, has the expected format and may still work.
  • Potential credential: the pattern looks sensitive, but ownership or validity is not yet established.
  • Known-safe test or example: documentation or a fixture explicitly identifies it as non-secret. Keep evidence for that decision without publishing the full value.
  • False positive: the match is ordinary data or an identifier with no authentication capability.

Use safe evidence

Record the scanner name and version, path, commit or archive name, line number where practical, detector, first-seen revision and remediation owner. Mask the middle of a value if a human must distinguish two candidates. Never place the complete secret in a bug report, pull request, email, screenshot or chat transcript.

Check validity through the issuer

Validity can be uncertain because a token may have expired, been restricted by IP, or require a second credential. Do not infer safety from a failed verification attempt. Ask the issuing provider to show whether the token is active, review access logs when available, and revoke it if there is any reasonable chance it was exposed.

Respond immediately when a real credential was exposed

GitHub’s official guidance says: “When you receive an alert, rotate the affected credential immediately to prevent unauthorized access.” The same priority applies to a confirmed local finding or a warning from another host.

  1. Revoke or rotate first. Disable the old key, token, password or certificate at the issuing service. Create a replacement with the minimum permissions required.
  2. Update legitimate consumers. Replace the credential in deployment settings, secret stores, scheduled jobs and local environment configuration. Check that the application still works with the replacement.
  3. Assess use. Review provider audit logs for unexpected access, downloads, model changes or data reads during the exposure window. Escalate according to your incident process if misuse is possible.
  4. Remove the value from the shareable copy. Delete it from current files, notebooks, generated outputs and archives. Use a placeholder or an environment-variable reference in examples.
  5. Decide on history cleanup. If the credential is revoked, GitHub notes that removing secrets from history can be time-intensive and is often unnecessary for credential safety. History rewriting may still be required by policy, privacy obligations or to prevent further accidental disclosure, but it is a separate decision from invalidating the credential.
  6. Tell recipients what changed. If a copy was already distributed, notify recipients that the old credential is invalid and ask them to delete cached copies and avoid redistributing them.

Why a clean scan cannot guarantee a clean project

Secret scanners look for known patterns, validation signals and configured file scope. They can miss a credential that uses an unrecognized format, is encoded or transformed, is split across files, is stored inside an unsupported binary artifact, or never appears in the scanned revision.

GitHub’s detection-scope guidance specifically describes paired-credential limitations: for certain patterns, both elements must be in the same file and pushed. A project can therefore contain a usable credential without producing that paired alert. Hosted services also differ in which repository types and plans are eligible, and a local scanner cannot see a remote copy that was not included in its input.

Use layered checks to reduce these gaps: scan the source tree and history locally, inspect generated artifacts, verify hosted-service coverage, and examine the final archive. Keep the conclusion narrow: “No findings in the paths, revisions and detectors examined” is accurate; “No secrets exist” is not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent the next exposure

Keep credentials outside project files

Use environment variables or a managed secret store for runtime credentials. Commit a configuration example that contains variable names but no usable values. Make sure notebooks read those variables without displaying them in output cells.

Protect the commit path

Use a pre-commit scan to catch accidental additions and a CI scan to check changes submitted by contributors or automation. Review exceptions rather than disabling a detector globally; an exception should identify the exact file, reason and owner.

Control generated material

Define which logs, checkpoints, dataset manifests and model exports may be shared. Add generated directories to an explicit review list, because a source-only policy can miss credentials copied into an artifact during training or packaging.

Limit permissions and lifetime

Use separate credentials for development, CI and release publishing. Grant only the permissions each task needs, set expiration where the provider supports it, and make rotation routine rather than an emergency-only action.

Comparison of the three documented approaches

Approach What is established Best fit Important qualification
Gitleaks Scans Git repositories, directories and files; supports history scanning, local use, CI and pre-commit integration. A controlled check of a working tree, repository and automation pipeline. Coverage depends on the installed version, configured patterns and the paths you provide.
GitHub Secret Scanning Scans all Git history on all branches, produces alerts and supports customization. A GitHub-hosted repository where the repository type and plan provide the feature. Eligibility varies, and detection behavior differs by pattern, token type and settings.
Hugging Face push scanning Runs TruffleHog on each push and emails notifications for verified detections; leaked Hub tokens can be invalidated. A project uploaded to the Hugging Face Hub. Unverified does not necessarily mean harmless because verification can fail technically.

No current controlled comparison establishes that one of these approaches is more accurate or comprehensive than the others. Select based on where the project lives, which revisions you control and whether you need local, hosted, pre-commit or push-time checks.

Final pre-sharing checklist

  • Inventory the exact files, repository branches, tags, notebooks, artifacts and archives leaving your machine.
  • Scan the working directory and the Git repository with a locally controlled scanner.
  • Scan all history and branches included in the handoff, not only the latest commit.
  • Verify whether the hosting service and repository plan provide secret scanning.
  • Inspect every alert without copying the full value into a report.
  • Revoke or rotate any credential that may be real, even when verification is inconclusive.
  • Remove obsolete values from current files, notebooks, generated outputs and archives.
  • Decide separately whether history rewriting is required by policy or disclosure risk.
  • Scan the final export or archive that recipients will actually receive.
  • Record the scope and result precisely so a clean scan is not mistaken for a guarantee.
