To scaffold a GraphQL server in Node.js, install a GraphQL server package, define a schema, connect its fields to resolver functions, and start an HTTP listener. The example below uses Apollo Server and Node.js 20 or newer; if you already use NestJS or prefer a compact GraphQL-over-HTTP setup, NestJS GraphQL and GraphQL Yoga are alternatives described later.
What a GraphQL server scaffold needs
A minimal server has four working parts:
- A GraphQL implementation: the package that parses and executes GraphQL operations.
- An HTTP integration: the part that accepts requests and passes operations to GraphQL.
- A schema: the types and fields clients are allowed to query.
- Resolvers: functions that supply the values for schema fields.
Apollo’s getting-started documentation describes the schema as defining the structure of data clients can query. In Apollo’s Node setup, graphql supplies parsing and execution algorithms, while @apollo/server handles HTTP requests and runs operations.
Scaffold a minimal Apollo Server
1. Check the runtime and create a project
Apollo’s getting-started guide lists Node.js v20.0.0 or newer as a prerequisite. Check your installed version, then create a project:
node --version
mkdir graphql-server
cd graphql-server
npm init -y
npm install @apollo/server graphql
If your Node version is older than v20, upgrade it before using this documented starter. The example uses JavaScript modules. Add "type": "module" to package.json and add a start script:

{
"type": "module",
"scripts": {
"start": "node index.js"
}
}
If you already have a package.json, merge these fields into it rather than replacing its dependencies or scripts.
2. Define a schema, data, and resolvers
Create index.js. This small example exposes a list of books and a query for one book by ID:

import { ApolloServer } from '@apollo/server';
import { startStandaloneServer } from '@apollo/server/standalone';
const books = [
{ id: '1', title: 'The Hobbit', author: 'J. R. R. Tolkien' },
{ id: '2', title: 'Kindred', author: 'Octavia E. Butler' },
];
const typeDefs = `#graphql
type Book {
id: ID!
title: String!
author: String!
}
type Query {
books: [Book!]!
book(id: ID!): Book
}
`;
const resolvers = {
Query: {
books: () => books,
book: (_parent, { id }) => books.find((item) => item.id === id) ?? null,
},
};
const server = new ApolloServer({ typeDefs, resolvers });
const { url } = await startStandaloneServer(server, {
listen: { port: 4000 },
});
console.log(`Server ready at ${url}`);
The schema declares the shape and nullability of the results. The resolver map implements the root Query fields. Here the data is an in-memory array, so it resets whenever the process restarts; replace it with a database or service when the application needs persistent data.
3. Start it and run a query
Run the server from the project directory:
npm start
After the terminal reports the server URL, send a GraphQL request to that endpoint. For example, with cURL:

curl -X POST http://localhost:4000/
-H 'content-type: application/json'
--data '{"query":"{ books { id title author } }"}'
The response should contain a data.books array with both records. A lookup query can be sent as:
curl -X POST http://localhost:4000/
-H 'content-type: application/json'
--data '{"query":"query BookById($id: ID!) { book(id: $id) { title author } }","variables":{"id":"1"}}'
With this standalone Apollo integration, the listener is at the root path shown in the printed URL. Other integrations may use a configured path such as /graphql; send requests to the route your chosen integration actually mounts.

Choose a scaffold that fits the project
| Option | Good fit | Schema workflow and HTTP setup |
|---|---|---|
| Apollo Server | A standalone JavaScript or TypeScript GraphQL service, or an application that needs a documented framework or serverless integration. | The getting-started path defines schema and resolvers and starts a server; Apollo also documents integrations with multiple Node.js frameworks and serverless environments. |
| NestJS GraphQL | An application already organized around NestJS modules, or a team that wants that framework structure. | Supports code-first schema generation from TypeScript decorators/classes and schema-first authoring in GraphQL SDL. Nest documents Apollo Server and Mercurius drivers; installation and configuration depend on the selected driver and Nest version. |
| GraphQL Yoga v5 | A Node HTTP server needing a concise GraphQL-over-HTTP handler, or a project that wants to choose among schema-building approaches. | Its quick start installs graphql-yoga and graphql, creates a schema and Yoga instance, and passes the handler to Node’s createServer; the example endpoint is /graphql. |
These are different project fits, not a universal ranking. Decide based on the framework already in use, whether schema definitions should live in TypeScript or SDL, the intended runtime and hosting integration, and how much application structure the project needs. Consult the current official setup documentation for the option you select: Apollo Server’s getting-started and overview documentation, NestJS’s GraphQL + TypeScript quick start, or The Guild’s GraphQL Yoga v5 quick start.

A server that responds locally is not automatically ready for public traffic. Decide how clients will reach the API and what operations they are allowed to execute. The Guild’s Yoga production guidance treats these as workload-dependent controls rather than mandatory settings for every project.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Control exposure and operation cost
- Private API with controlled clients: Yoga documents persisted operations as a way to limit execution to operations registered by the developer. This can suit clients whose queries you control.
- Public API: consider query-cost controls such as maximum depth, directives, and aliases. Select limits with the actual schema and workload in mind; unrestricted expensive operations can consume disproportionate resources.
- Development tools: turning off an in-browser IDE alone is not a complete security strategy. Production planning should address API exposure and which operations the server will execute.
Plan for load and errors
- Caching: Yoga discusses response caching as an option when it can reduce load on backing services or databases. Whether it helps depends on the data and freshness requirements.
- Error reporting: external reporting services such as Sentry are an operational option for capturing failures. Choose reporting and alerting appropriate to the service; they are not required to make the local scaffold work.
- Data access: replace the in-memory array with suitable persistence or service calls, and account for the behavior and cost of those dependencies.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- Node version is too old: Apollo’s documented starter requires Node.js 20.0.0 or newer. Check with
node --versionand run the project with a compatible runtime. - Cannot find package: run
npm install @apollo/server graphqlfrom the directory containing the project’spackage.json. If using Yoga instead, install its documented pair,graphql-yogaandgraphql, rather than mixing setup instructions. - Import or module syntax error: the sample uses ES modules. Set
"type": "module"in the package file, or convert the imports and startup code consistently to the module system your project uses. - Port is already in use: another process may be listening on 4000. Stop that process or change the listener port, then send requests to the new URL printed by the server.
- 404 or connection refused: ensure the process is running and use its actual endpoint. The Apollo standalone example above uses the root path; Yoga’s documented quick start uses
/graphql. - Unknown field or validation error: compare the operation’s field names and arguments with
typeDefs. GraphQL rejects fields not declared in the schema before their resolvers run. - A field returns null or the wrong value: check that a resolver exists for the root field and returns data compatible with the declared type. In the sample, an unmatched book ID deliberately returns
null.
Extend the scaffold without overbuilding it
Add structure when the application needs it, not simply because a starter project can accommodate it. NestJS is a natural next choice if module conventions and code-first or schema-first organization are central to the application. For a learning progression rather than a required dependency list, The Guild’s Yoga tutorial develops a Node.js, TypeScript, and Yoga server with Prisma and SQLite, then adds validation, pagination, and filtering.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a GraphQL server scaffold. If you also need a screenshot of your locally or publicly accessible API documentation page, its one-call endpoint can capture a page as an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures the Apollo documentation site:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.apollographql.com/docs/apollo-server -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I scaffold a GraphQL server in TypeScript?
Yes. Apollo documents JavaScript and TypeScript starter paths, and NestJS supports TypeScript-based code-first schema generation as well as SDL-based schema-first development.
Do I need a database before I can start?
No. The example uses in-memory data to demonstrate the schema and resolver flow; persistent storage becomes necessary when the application needs data to survive process restarts.
