You can save videos from YouTube, TikTok, and X without a third-party downloader, but there is no single free official method that works the same way on all three. The available options depend on whether you own the video, whether its creator allows downloads, and whether you need a video file or just offline playback in an app.
What “save” means on each platform
A saved link, an offline copy inside an app, a downloaded video file, and an export of your own account data are different things. The official options below do not provide a free portable download of every video you can watch.

Save YouTube videos
Download your own uploads
YouTube lets creators download individual uploads from YouTube Studio or export all uploaded videos through Google Takeout. YouTube Help says available MP4 downloads are 720p or 360p depending on video size. Individual videos can be downloaded up to five times per day. A download may be unavailable if the video was removed, has certain strikes, uses pre-approved audio, or has reached that daily limit. See YouTube’s instructions for downloading your own videos.

YouTube Premium members can download certain videos for offline playback in the YouTube app in select areas. This is app-only viewing, not a portable MP4: YouTube says offline downloads are encrypted and can only be watched in YouTube. YouTube Help also states, “You can’t download other users’ YouTube videos” through its creator-download route. Availability varies by area; check YouTube’s offline-video help page.

Save TikTok videos
Save a video when the creator allows it
- Open the TikTok video.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Save video, if that option appears.
TikTok’s Help Center says, “If you don’t have the option to save a video, this means the creator doesn’t allow it.” The app’s built-in option is therefore not available for every video. Follow the steps in TikTok’s video-download help.
Keep a copy of your own post
Before posting your own video or photo, enable Save to device on the Post screen. While editing, you can also tap Save. TikTok says downloads are off by default for private accounts and accounts belonging to users under 16, and those accounts cannot turn the setting on. A copy already downloaded by another person remains on their device even if you later disable downloads. Review TikTok’s download-setting guidance before choosing your preferences.

Download videos from X
Check whether a post permits downloads
X says Premium subscribers can download videos from certain posts. Open the video, tap its three-dot menu, then tap Download video if the option is available. The uploader can turn off Allow video to be downloaded while composing a post. X says the feature applies to eligible videos posted from July 25, 2023; videos posted before that date are not downloadable through this feature. To retrieve media attached to your own posts, request your X data archive. It can include posts, direct messages, and attached media such as videos, images, and GIFs. X says archive preparation may take a few days. This exports your account data; it is not a way to download another person’s post. See X’s archive instructions.

Downloading does not grant reuse rights
Being able to save a video does not automatically give you permission to repost, remix, distribute, or monetize it. YouTube’s terms limit downloading and other uses to cases the service permits, the rights holder authorizes where applicable, or applicable law allows. TikTok’s US terms limit use of TikTok content and address downloading, copying, distribution, and other exploitation without required consent. These are platform and jurisdiction-specific terms, not a complete statement of law everywhere: YouTube Terms of Service and TikTok US Terms of Service.
For US copyright, fair use is assessed case by case using factors including purpose and character, the nature of the work, the amount used, and effect on the market. X says it cannot determine whether a particular use qualifies; its fair-use guidance is not permission to reuse a video.

Be cautious with tools that ask for account access
The official routes above do not require handing your social-account password to a downloader. X warns that connected third-party apps may receive permission to read account information or act on an account, depending on the access granted. Before authorizing any app, review its requested permissions, terms, and privacy policy; do not treat this caution as proof that a particular site is malicious.
