To force a save on a PC ARK server, open the in-game console with Tab and run admincheat saveworld. If your account is not already authorized, first run enablecheats <admin password>. The shorter saveworld command also works in many ARK: Survival Evolved setups. Wait for the command to complete before stopping the server.
Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
ARK also saves automatically. Community hosting guides commonly report a default interval of 15 minutes, controlled by AutoSavePeriodMinutes. The exact command behavior, configuration-file location and clean-shutdown command can differ between ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE), ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA), server software and patches, so test the procedure on your own server before relying on it for a critical world.

First identify which ARK server you are running
ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended share many administration concepts, but they do not always behave identically. Before changing settings, determine whether the server is running ASE or ASA and whether you are entering commands in the game client or in the dedicated-server console supplied by your host.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| ASE or ASA? | ASA reports the same autosave setting but community reports disagree about the file that contains it. Manual-save behavior also differs in some dedicated consoles. |
| In-game console or dedicated console? | admincheat saveworld is widely reported to work from the in-game console. An ASA dedicated-console user reported that it did nothing there, so test both command forms. |
| Self-hosted or rented server? | The host may expose configuration through a control panel rather than letting you edit files directly. Stopping or restarting through the panel may also be safer than closing a process window. |
If you are unsure, make a manual save from the in-game console, watch the server log or panel for confirmation, and then perform a controlled restart on a test copy or during a low-risk session.

Force a save on ARK: Survival Evolved
A manual save writes the current world state immediately instead of waiting for the next autosave cycle. Use it before a planned restart, configuration change, major construction project, mod change or maintenance window.
Save from the in-game PC console
- Join the server with an account that has administrative permission.
- Press Tab to open the console. On some keyboard layouts, the console key can be changed in the game controls.
- If the account is not listed as an allowed cheater, enter
enablecheats <admin password>, replacing the bracketed text with the server’s administrator password. Do not include the angle brackets. - Enter
admincheat saveworldand press Enter. - Wait several seconds, monitor the server output if available, and avoid disconnecting or killing the process while the save is being written.
Many ASE guides also report that the bare command saveworld works after administrative access has been enabled. If the prefixed form produces no visible result, try the bare form once. A lack of chat feedback does not prove that the world failed to save; check the server log, file timestamp or host-panel status where those are available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing a dedicated-server console
Host panels and dedicated-server wrappers often accept administrator commands without the in-game Tab interface. Enter saveworld first, then verify that the world file timestamp or server log changed. If the wrapper requires the prefix, use admincheat saveworld. The exact prompt, authentication step and feedback depend on the server software, so do not assume that a command accepted by the game client will behave identically in the host console.
Force a save on ARK: Survival Ascended
ASA uses the same command names in many environments, but reports from dedicated-server operators are inconsistent. One operator reported that admincheat saveworld did nothing in the dedicated console even though it worked in the in-game console.
Recommended ASA test sequence
- Connect to the server and open the in-game console with Tab.
- Run
enablecheats <admin password>if your account is not already authorized. - Run
admincheat saveworld. - If there is no evidence of a save, run
saveworldwithout the prefix. - For a dedicated console, repeat the test with each form and compare the server log or world-file timestamp.
Do this once during a controlled session rather than discovering a command problem immediately before a shutdown. Server patches can change console handling, and a command that is valid in the client may be ignored by a particular dedicated-console wrapper.

How ARK autosaves
ARK performs background saves without an administrator command. Community hosting documentation commonly cites a default interval of 15 minutes. That figure is a reported default, not an official guarantee for every current patch, platform or host configuration. A server can therefore lose more than the latest few minutes of activity if it crashes between autosaves.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe setting: AutoSavePeriodMinutes
The interval is controlled by AutoSavePeriodMinutes. ASA community configuration examples show the value as a floating-point number such as 15.0; keep the decimal point when editing a float value. For example:
AutoSavePeriodMinutes=15.0
To request a five-minute interval, an example community setting is:
AutoSavePeriodMinutes=5.0
Changing the interval increases how often the server writes the world. A shorter period can reduce rollback after a crash, but it can also add disk activity and should be tested on the hardware and storage used by your server.
Where to edit the setting
Community reports disagree about whether the setting belongs in GameUserSettings.ini or GameServerSettings.ini, particularly for ASA. One reported example places it under a [ServerSettings] section. Because the correct location can vary by game, host and patch, use this process:

- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game. - Stop the server through its normal control-panel or service procedure.
- Back up the relevant configuration files before editing.
- Search the configuration directory for
AutoSavePeriodMinutes. - If the key exists, change only its value and preserve the section name and capitalization.
- If it does not exist, consult the host’s current configuration editor or documentation for the correct file and section rather than inserting it randomly.
- Save the file, start the server and check the startup log for configuration errors.
- Observe at least one complete interval and confirm that the world file or log changes as expected.
Hosted servers may expose the setting as an “autosave period” field instead of giving direct file access. In that case, use the panel’s field and confirm whether it expects minutes, a decimal value or a whole number.
Save before shutting down or restarting
The safest shutdown sequence is to force a save, allow it to finish, then use the server’s normal stop control. Abruptly closing a hosting client, terminal window or server process can leave the world at the last completed autosave and cause a rollback.
Safe shutdown checklist
- Tell connected players to stop crafting, transferring items or traveling between maps.
- Run
admincheat saveworldfrom the in-game console, or the command form that you verified for your server. - Wait for confirmation in the log, panel or updated world-file timestamp.
- Stop the server with the host’s Stop, Shutdown or equivalent control.
- Wait until the process is fully stopped before changing configuration files, replacing mods or restarting.
For ASA dedicated consoles, community reports say that entering quit or exit can save and shut down cleanly. These reports are not official confirmation and may depend on the server wrapper. Treat those commands as a testable option, not a universal guarantee. If they are unsupported, use the host’s normal stop control after a verified manual save.
What happens during a rollback
A rollback means the server starts from an older world state. Player inventories, structures, tames and map changes made after the last successful write may disappear. A rollback is different from a player dying: restarting the server does not recreate progress that was never written to disk.

Immediate recovery steps
- Do not continue playing on the rolled-back world if you intend to restore another copy; new changes can overwrite useful evidence.
- Check the server log and file timestamps to identify the latest successful save.
- Ask the host whether it retains automatic snapshots or dated world files.
- Copy the current world and configuration files before attempting a restore.
- Restore only after the server is stopped, then start it and verify the map, player data and tribe data.
If no backup or snapshot exists, progress made after the last completed autosave may not be recoverable. That is why a manual save before maintenance and a tested backup routine matter more than relying on the interval alone.

Backups and dated restore points
Scheduled saves normally overwrite the main world file. Community reports say a forced save writes the main file and can also create a date-stamped file that serves as a restore point. One user reported seeing such backups roughly every two hours, but that timing is low-confidence and may reflect a particular host, script or server setup rather than ARK’s universal behavior.
Do not confuse a save with a backup
- Save: updates the active world so the server can resume from the latest state.
- Backup: preserves a separate copy that can be restored after corruption, an unwanted configuration change or a rollback.
- Snapshot: a host-managed copy that may exist outside the server directory and may have its own retention period.
After running a forced save, look for both the active world-file timestamp and any newly created dated copy. If only the active file changes, the command still saved the world, but you do not have an independent restore point. Download or copy backups away from the live server so a disk failure or destructive script cannot remove every copy.

The console does not open
Confirm that you are using the PC client and the correct console key. Check the game’s key bindings and make sure chat focus is not intercepting the key. Console availability and key behavior can differ across platforms, so a PC instruction should not be assumed to apply to console editions.
“You lack permission” or the command is ignored
Run enablecheats <admin password> exactly as configured on the server. Verify that the password is the server administrator password, not a host-panel login. If your account is already in the server’s allowed-cheaters file, authentication may not be required, but entering the command again during a test is harmless when the password is correct.
admincheat saveworld appears to do nothing
Try saveworld without the prefix, then check the log or file timestamp rather than relying on an on-screen message. In ASA, repeat the test from the in-game console even if the dedicated console ignored it. Make sure the server is not in the middle of a restart, mod installation or file-system error.
Best Value
The setting does not take effect
Stop the server before editing configuration. Confirm that the key is in the file and section loaded by your game and host, that the value is numeric, and that the decimal format is accepted. A malformed entry can be ignored or cause a startup error. After restarting, inspect the startup output and observe more than one interval before concluding that the change failed.
The server still rolls back
A manual save cannot protect changes that occurred after it, and it cannot repair a failed disk write. Check available disk space, file permissions and host alerts. Verify that the server actually stopped cleanly; killing the process immediately after issuing the command can interrupt the write. If the problem repeats, reduce the amount of simultaneous maintenance work and ask the host for logs and snapshot information.
Single-player and non-dedicated sessions
The documented material for this topic does not establish a confirmed single-player save procedure. A community thread specifically asks how to save in single-player, but its contents were not available for verification. Do not assume that dedicated-server commands, host-panel controls or enablecheats behave the same way in a local single-player session.
For a local game, use the save or exit controls exposed by your current game build, and make a copy of the local save directory before experimenting with console commands. The exact directory and menu behavior depend on platform and edition; verify them against documentation for that build rather than applying a dedicated-server path.
A practical save routine for regular administrators
Before routine maintenance
- Announce a brief save window to players.
- Pause activities that create frequent writes, such as mass crafting or transfers.
- Run the verified manual-save command.
- Confirm the save in logs or timestamps.
- Create or copy a backup if the maintenance could affect the world or configuration.
- Stop the server through the normal control.
After changing the autosave interval
- Record the old value so you can revert it.
- Use a decimal value such as
15.0when the configuration expects a float. - Restart cleanly.
- Watch for at least one expected autosave and confirm the world file changes.
- Keep the shorter interval only if the additional write activity is acceptable for your hardware and players.
Before a large in-game change
Run a manual save immediately before a major building project, boss attempt, map transfer or mod change. This gives you a known recent save and, if your host creates dated copies, a possible restore point. It does not replace an independent backup, so copy the relevant files before changes that could damage the world.

Key points to remember
- For an authorized PC administrator, open the console with Tab and run
admincheat saveworld; trysaveworldif the server does not respond. - Autosave is enabled by default, with 15 minutes commonly reported, and is controlled by
AutoSavePeriodMinutes. - Save before every planned shutdown and wait for evidence that the write completed.
- ASE and ASA, especially their dedicated consoles and configuration-file locations, are not interchangeable. Test commands and settings on your own patched server.
- A save updates the live world; only a separate backup or snapshot gives you a reliable restore point.
