Why the DV confirmation PDF matters
A complete online entry ends with a confirmation screen containing your name and a unique confirmation number. The U.S. Department of State instructs applicants to print that screen for their records. The confirmation number is required later, together with the primary entrant’s family name and year of birth, to use Entrant Status Check.

Entrant Status Check is where the Department of State publishes selection results and any further instructions. A PDF gives you a searchable, repeatable copy instead of relying on a browser tab, an email, or a paper printout.
Save the confirmation page as a full-page PDF
- Remain on the confirmation screen. Do not close the tab after submitting the complete entry. The screen should show the entrant’s name and unique confirmation number.
- Open Print. Use the browser menu’s Print command or the print shortcut displayed by your browser.
- Choose a PDF destination. Select Save to PDF. On Windows, Microsoft Print to PDF performs the same basic job.
- Set the page orientation. Use the orientation that matches the preview. If the confirmation is wider than it is tall, landscape may be clearer; otherwise leave the natural orientation selected.
- Fit the entire page. Select Fit to page or the equivalent scaling option. If the preview cuts off a field or splits the confirmation awkwardly, lower the scale slightly and preview again.
- Remove browser extras. Turn off Headers and footers when the dialog offers that setting. This prevents the browser from adding the page URL, date, or title to the document.
- Save privately. Use a descriptive filename such as
DV-confirmation-2026.pdf, replacing the year with the year of your entry. Save it to a folder that is not publicly shared. - Inspect the file. Open the saved PDF rather than assuming the export worked. Scroll through the entire document and confirm that the entrant name, confirmation number, year of birth, and digital signature are visible and legible.
- Make a second secure copy. Keep the PDF in at least two secure locations, such as your computer and an encrypted backup. Do not post the confirmation number publicly or give it to an untrusted visa intermediary.
Make sure the PDF is complete and readable
Use the print preview, not the browser tab, as your check
A page can look complete in the tab but be clipped by print margins or scaling. The preview must show every part of the confirmation screen before you click Save. Pay particular attention to the area containing the confirmation number and the lower part of the page where the year of birth or digital signature may appear.

Choose readability over the smallest file
Do not reduce the scale so far that the confirmation number becomes difficult to read. A slightly larger PDF or a second page is preferable to a tiny number or a missing field. If the preview creates an unnecessary second page, first try Fit to page, then make a small scale adjustment.
Keep the original confirmation context
Do not crop the page into a screenshot that removes the name, date, or signature. The purpose of the saved document is to preserve the complete confirmation screen for later reference.

Which saving method should you use?

A physical printout can be an additional backup, but it is not required when the browser can create and safely store a PDF.
If you already closed the page or lost the file
Go directly to the official dvprogram.state.gov site and open Entrant Status Check. Do not follow links in unsolicited messages or use a similarly named website. On the help page, choose Forgot Confirmation Number and provide the requested primary-entrant information.

Recovery is not guaranteed: the system must be able to verify the information you submit. If you still have access to the confirmation screen, save it again and create the second copy before leaving the page.

No. It documents that the entry was submitted and gives you the number needed to check later. Selection results and subsequent instructions are provided through Entrant Status Check.
