In the N64 original, the Song of Time makes a persistent save while resetting the three-day cycle; an Owl Statue creates a temporary, one-use save for a break. In Majora’s Mask 3D, save at an owl or quill statue with A—returning to the first day does not save automatically.
First, identify your version
The N64 original and Majora’s Mask 3D have different save procedures. On N64, distinguish the persistent Song of Time save from the temporary Owl Statue interrupt save. On 3DS, save at a statue, and do not treat a first-day reset as a save.

Nintendo’s official N64 instruction manual and 3DS instruction manual describe these version-specific rules. The manuals’ publication years are not stated in the available records.

How to save on Nintendo 64
Make a persistent save with the Song of Time
- Play the Song of Time to return Link to 6:00 a.m. on the first day.
- Wait until “DAWN OF THE FIRST DAY” appears before switching off the console.
This saves game data while resetting the cycle. Nintendo’s manual warns that powering off without saving returns you to the last saved dawn.

Use an Owl Statue for a temporary break
- Activate the Owl Statue by striking it with your sword if it has not already been activated.
- Choose the prompted interrupt-save option.
- Wait for the title screen before powering off.
This interrupt save records your current status and the time of day, but it lasts only until you continue the game. After loading that save, make another Song of Time or Owl Statue save before quitting. Otherwise, a later session can revert to the previous Song of Time save. The North American and European manual describes this procedure; do not assume it applies to every regional release. Thonky’s walkthrough also notes a Japanese-version exception.
What the Song of Time reset keeps and removes on N64
A reset trades progress that persists across time travel for progress tied to the current cycle. Nintendo’s N64 manual lists these as retained:

- Maps, dungeon maps, and compasses
- Notebook notes
- Rupees deposited in the bank
The manual lists these as lost or reset:
- Cleared events and conversations; characters do not remember meeting Link after he travels back
- Usable-item counts
- Keys and stray fairies
- Rupees in Link’s wallet
Puzzles in mazes and other cleared events reset too. If you have temporary resources or unfinished cycle-specific objectives you want to use, account for that loss before playing the Song of Time.
How to save in Majora’s Mask 3D
- Stand in front of an owl statue or a quill statue.
- Press A to save.
The 3DS manual explicitly warns that returning to the Dawn of the First Day does not automatically save. Save at a statue when your goal is to preserve current progress. The reset loses rupees and some collected items, and dungeons and events revert. If three full days pass and the moon falls, Link returns to dawn with inventory reverted to the last Song of Time state, except for items that cannot travel through time.

Majora’s Mask 3D is a Nintendo 3DS remaster released on 13 February 2015, according to Nintendo’s product page. Nintendo says 3DS eShop purchases ended on 27 March 2023, so digital availability should not be assumed.

The cycle is a planning loop, not a demand to finish every side activity in one run. On N64, Nintendo describes the cycle as three days, or 72 in-game hours. Time moves continuously during play but stops during conversations and when the game is paused with START. As Nintendo’s official N64 manual puts it: “Time flows continuously in the game, except during conversations and when you’ve paused the game by pressing START.”

The 3DS manual likewise says time flows continuously: each 24 in-game hours ends a day, and time pauses during conversations and in certain subscreens, including the Bombers’ Notebook and item screen.
- Check which edition you are playing and use that version’s save method.
- Decide which progress you need to keep and which cycle-specific tasks or resources you can afford to lose.
- Save or reset after securing the progress you intend to preserve, and before the cycle deadline defeats you.
These steps follow the manuals’ documented save and clock rules; they do not rely on a particular song input or a claimed time-slowing rate.
