Turn on Store Past Broadcasts before you stream, then download each recording from Video Producer or export it to a connected YouTube account. Twitch currently lists 60 days for Partners, Prime users and Twitch Turbo users, 14 days for Affiliates, and 7 days for other broadcasters. A vertical version of a dual-format VOD and a 2K version expire after 7 days even when a horizontal or 1080p version remains.
If a broadcast was never saved or its retention period has ended, Twitch says it no longer exists on its servers and Support cannot recover it. Treat every Twitch copy as temporary and verify your own archive while the video is still available.

What Twitch saves—and for how long
Twitch calls recorded live streams past broadcasts, or VODs. They are not permanent uploads by default. Retention depends on the broadcaster’s account category, according to Twitch’s current On-Demand Content guidance accessed in 2026.
Recommended Free Tools
| Account category | Ordinary past-broadcast retention | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Partners, Prime users and Twitch Turbo users | 60 days | Download or export within 60 days of the broadcast. |
| Affiliates | 14 days | Start the archive workflow as soon as the stream ends. |
| All other broadcasters | 7 days | Plan a same-day or next-day copy. |
These are Twitch’s operational retention rules, not a guarantee that every video remains playable for the full period. A recording can fail to appear if storage was not enabled, the stream used an incompatible configuration, or network instability prevented a usable recording. The countdown also varies by format.

Vertical and 2K versions expire sooner
For a dual-format stream, Twitch says the vertical VOD is available for 7 days. The horizontal version remains for the rest of the account’s ordinary retention period. For a 2K stream, the 2K version expires after 7 days while the 1080p version remains for the rest of the applicable period.
For example, a Partner may still have the horizontal recording during the rest of a 60-day window after the vertical or 2K copy disappears. An Affiliate may have only the remaining portion of a 14-day window. Download the highest-value version first; do not assume the longer retention of one version protects every version.
Enable recording before you go live
Store Past Broadcasts is off by default. When it is off, Twitch does not save the past broadcast, and you cannot use that VOD to create Highlights or Clips afterward. Turning the setting on after a stream cannot recreate a recording that was never stored.

- Sign in to Twitch before your next broadcast.
- Open your Creator Dashboard.
- Open Settings, then Stream or Stream Settings, depending on the interface label shown to your account.
- Find Store Past Broadcasts and switch it on.
- Confirm that the switch remains enabled before starting the broadcast.
Make this a pre-stream checklist item. If several people manage a channel, have the person preparing the broadcast confirm the setting rather than assuming another operator enabled it.

Why a saved stream can still be missing
Enabling storage is necessary, but Twitch notes that a broadcast can still fail to save because of incompatible configuration or network instability. After a stream, check Video Producer instead of assuming the recording exists. If it is missing, do not wait for the retention deadline; Twitch says an unsaved broadcast is not recoverable from its servers.
Download a VOD to your own device
The native local-archive workflow saves one video at a time from Twitch’s Video Producer. It gives you a file that you can place on a computer, an external drive or another storage system you control.
- Open the Creator Dashboard.
- Under Content, select Video Producer.
- Locate the past broadcast. Use the available filter or sort controls if the video list is long.
- Open the three-dot menu beside the video.
- Choose Download.
- Wait for the download to begin, then let it finish before closing the browser or putting the device to sleep.
- Open the resulting file and check that it plays, has the expected duration and contains the audio you need.
Twitch cautions that a long video may take time before the download starts. A delay before the browser shows download activity does not necessarily mean the request failed. Keep the Video Producer page open while Twitch prepares the file, and use a stable connection for the transfer.

The audio-recognition limitation
Twitch’s Audio Recognition system can mute sections of a VOD. Downloading a muted VOD does not produce an unmuted copy. If the online recording already has muted audio, the downloaded file reflects that state; the download function is not an audio restoration tool.

There is no native bulk download
Twitch’s documented workflow is per video. It does not provide a built-in bulk-download command for a channel’s entire VOD library. The help guidance mentions third-party tools for bulk downloading but does not endorse a particular tool. If you consider one, treat it as separate software with its own security, account-access and reliability risks rather than as an official Twitch feature.
Export a VOD directly to YouTube
If you prefer a hosted copy, Twitch lets you connect a YouTube account and export an individual VOD. This avoids downloading the file to your computer first, but it still requires you to start the export before the Twitch retention deadline and to verify that the upload completed.
- Open Twitch’s account Connections page.
- Connect the Twitch account to the intended YouTube account and complete the authorization prompts.
- If the VOD is longer than 15 minutes, verify the YouTube account. Twitch identifies verification as necessary for uploads over YouTube’s 15-minute limit.
- Return to Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
- Open the three-dot menu for the VOD and choose Export.
- Select the connected YouTube destination if prompted and start the export.
- Check YouTube for the resulting video, its processing status, visibility setting and audio.
The 15-minute figure is Twitch’s statement about YouTube’s upload requirement. It is not a claim that every account, region or YouTube policy will behave identically. Complete account verification before you need to archive a long stream, not when the Twitch deadline is hours away.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDownload or export? Use the path that fits your archive
| Consideration | Download from Video Producer | Export to YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| Result | An individual video file on your device. | An individual video sent to a connected YouTube account. |
| Storage responsibility | You choose the computer, external drive or other destination and must protect the file. | You rely on the connected account and must confirm that the upload and processing completed. |
| Best fit | Editors, creators with a local archive, or anyone who wants direct control of the file. | Creators who want a hosted copy and do not want to manage the initial local transfer. |
| Operational constraint | Long videos may take time before the download begins; there is no native bulk download. | Account connection and YouTube’s upload requirements apply; long uploads require the verification Twitch describes. |
| Verification step | Play the downloaded file and check its duration and audio. | Check the YouTube video after upload and processing. |
Neither path should be treated as a promise of permanent preservation by the destination service. A YouTube export is still subject to that account’s access and policies, while a local file can be lost through drive failure or accidental deletion. For important broadcasts, keeping both a verified local copy and a second copy in a separate location is a sensible archival practice, but Twitch does not specify a required drive type, model or backup provider.

Save the formats that matter before their shorter deadline
When a stream has multiple output formats, decide which version you actually need before downloading. The vertical and 2K copies have a seven-day expiry under Twitch’s guidance, even when the horizontal or 1080p copy lasts longer.
- Short-form or mobile editing: prioritize the vertical version during its seven-day window.
- High-resolution production archive: prioritize the 2K version during its seven-day window.
- General replay: preserve the horizontal or 1080p version before the account’s 60-, 14- or 7-day deadline.
Do not wait for the ordinary account deadline if you want a vertical or 2K edit. A Partner who waits 10 days may still see the horizontal VOD but no longer have the vertical or 2K source available through Twitch.
What Twitch’s clip guidance does—and does not—promise
Twitch’s dual-format guidance says clips created from dual-format streams are available in both vertical and horizontal formats and do not expire. That is specific guidance for dual-format clips. It should not be expanded into a universal guarantee that every clip, in every account or creation circumstance, is permanent.
Keep the distinction clear:
- A VOD is the recorded past broadcast and has the account-based retention periods described above.
- A Highlight is a saved selection made from available video; it cannot be created from a VOD that was never stored.
- A Clip is a short extract. Twitch explicitly describes non-expiring vertical and horizontal versions for clips from dual-format streams, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal expiration rule for every clip scenario.
If a clip is important, preserve the underlying usable video or an exported/downloaded copy while it is available. A clip page that still exists is not a substitute for a file you have checked and stored yourself.

A practical archive checklist
Use this sequence after every stream, with the timing adjusted to your account category.
- Confirm the setting: before going live, verify that Store Past Broadcasts is enabled.
- Check for the recording: after ending the stream, open Video Producer and confirm that the past broadcast appears.
- Identify urgent variants: if the stream has vertical or 2K output, handle those versions within seven days.
- Choose a destination: decide whether the master copy belongs on a local device, in YouTube, or in both.
- Start the transfer early: use Download or Export while plenty of retention time remains.
- Verify the result: play the local file or inspect the YouTube upload for duration, picture and audio.
- Store a second copy when the recording matters: place the verified local file on a separate storage destination if you can.
- Record the deadline: note whether your account has a 60-day, 14-day or 7-day ordinary window and whether a seven-day vertical or 2K deadline applies.
Troubleshoot common failures
The VOD is not in Video Producer
- Check that you are viewing the correct channel and the correct time range.
- Confirm that Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before the stream began.
- Consider whether an incompatible configuration or network instability prevented Twitch from saving it.
- Do not assume Support can restore it. Twitch says an unsaved broadcast no longer exists on its servers and cannot be recovered.
The download has not started
Long videos may take time before Twitch begins preparing the download. Leave the page open, maintain the connection and try again while the VOD is still within its retention period. If the browser eventually produces a file, test it before deleting or replacing anything else.
The downloaded file has muted audio
Twitch’s Audio Recognition system may have muted parts of the VOD. The download mirrors the muted recording; it does not unmute it. Keep that limitation in mind when deciding whether the Twitch VOD is sufficient as an editing master.
The YouTube export fails or remains unavailable
- Confirm that the Twitch and YouTube accounts are connected through Connections.
- For a video longer than 15 minutes, complete the YouTube verification Twitch says is required.
- Check the YouTube account for processing, visibility or access issues after export.
- If the export cannot be completed, switch to a local download while the Twitch VOD remains available.
A vertical or 2K version has disappeared
That can be expected after seven days under Twitch’s current guidance. Check whether the horizontal or 1080p version is still within the ordinary account retention period, but do not expect that remaining version to recreate the higher-resolution or vertical source.
What happens after a VOD expires?
Twitch’s stated recovery limit is decisive: once a broadcast passes its retention period, or was not saved in the first place, the content no longer exists on Twitch’s servers and Twitch Support cannot recover it. There is no documented restore step that turns an expired VOD back into a downloadable file.
That is why the safe order is enable storage, confirm the VOD exists, copy it, verify the copy, then rely on your own archive. Waiting until the final day creates unnecessary risk from a long preparation delay, a failed export, a lost connection or a missing format variant.
Recommended timing by account type
| Account type | First action | Latest sensible target |
|---|---|---|
| Partner, Prime or Twitch Turbo | Confirm the VOD appears immediately after the stream. | Before day 60; before day 7 for vertical or 2K versions. |
| Affiliate | Start the archive workflow the same day or next day. | Before day 14; before day 7 for vertical or 2K versions. |
| Other broadcaster | Start downloading or exporting as soon as the stream ends. | Before day 7; the seven-day variant limit leaves no extra time for vertical or 2K output. |
These targets are deliberately earlier than the absolute deadline. Twitch gives retention periods, not a guaranteed download start time or transfer duration, so preserving a file early leaves room to retry and verify it.
